That is a calculation from an annual figure—not a weekly payroll amount published by the club—and it covers more than first-team players.
How the weekly average is calculated
SalarySport reports Sunderland’s 2024/25 wages and salaries at £45.961 million. Dividing that annual total by 52 weeks gives £883,865, or about £884,000 per week. The period is the financial year ended 31 July 2025, not the current 2026/27 season.
The club’s Companies House filing history lists full accounts made up to 31 July 2025, filed on 27 March 2026. The detailed wage breakdown cited here is attributed to SalarySport, a secondary source; the Companies House filing-history page confirms the accounts period and filing date but does not display the detailed wage figure in its retrieved text.
Wages and salaries versus total staff costs
Wages and salaries are one part of the wider staff-cost total. SalarySport separately lists £6.773 million in social security costs and £165,000 in pension costs for 2024/25. Adding those to wages and salaries gives £52.899 million, or approximately £1.017 million a week when divided by 52. SalarySport rounds the annual staff-cost total to about £53 million.

The broader staff-cost measure includes players, coaching staff, academy staff and ground staff, according to SalarySport’s description. It should not be read as a first-team-only payroll figure.
What the figures do—and do not—tell you
- About £884,000 a week: an average derived from £45.961 million in annual wages and salaries.
- About £1.02 million a week: an average derived from roughly £53 million in annual staff costs, including social security and pension costs.
- Not a current weekly payroll disclosure: the figures relate to the 2024/25 reporting year and are annual totals converted to weekly averages.
- Not a first-team player-wage estimate: the staff-cost scope extends beyond players.
Agent fees are separate from wages. The Football Association’s 2025/26 report lists Sunderland’s net football-agent fees for 2024/25 as £2,170,045. That regulatory measure is not salary or staff-cost data and should not be added to the weekly wage average.
