For the U.S. 2026 buying season, two Extension estimates put a bull’s illustrative value between $8,100 and $17,175—but they use different methods and assumptions, so neither is a universal fair price. Set your own bid ceiling by estimating the added value the bull can generate in your herd, then subtracting his full ownership cost and accounting for risk.

What do the 2026 bull-price benchmarks mean?

The available 2026 estimates are useful reference points, not current quotes for every breed, region, or sale. They differ because one applies historical price multiples to market values, while the other values a bull against the calf revenue an operation expects at its chosen marketing endpoint.

Benchmark Estimate Basis and limitation
Illinois Extension historical-multiple method $8,100–$9,840 Travis Meteer applied 2006–2025 ratios from the Illinois Performance Tested Bull Sale series: 4.1 times feeder-calf value and 2.3 times fat-steer value. Using a $2,400 five-weight feeder calf produced an estimate of $9,840; using a $3,525 fat steer produced just over $8,100. These market inputs reflect the article’s writing date. Illinois Extension
Oklahoma State Extension five-calves rule $12,000–$17,175 Mark Z. Johnson used end-of-2025 values to illustrate $12,000 for selling 500-pound weaned steers, $14,000 for selling 800-pound yearlings, and $17,175 for retaining ownership through finishing. The result depends on marketing endpoint and is not a precise price recommendation. Oklahoma State Extension

A separate regional data point is the 2025 Illinois Performance Tested Bull Sale average: $7,096 across 33 lots, with a high-selling bull at $13,000. That is one sale’s result, not a nationwide average or a 2026 quote. Illinois Extension sale results

Breed, genetics, age, sale conditions, local demand, and your marketing plan can all change what makes sense to pay. No nationwide current price distribution by breed and region is established by these figures, so consult local, breed-specific sale catalogs and results before setting a bid.

How do you calculate your operation’s bid ceiling?

Compare the bull’s expected added calf value with his cost per weaned calf over his useful life. Nebraska Extension’s Beef Bull Value Cow-Q-Lator provides a framework that includes the purchase and cull values, years of service, annual ownership expenses, expected cows bred, weaning rate, financing, mortality and injury risk, and estimated added dollars per calf. Nebraska Extension Beef Bull Value Cow-Q-Lator

  1. Estimate his added value per calf. Use the traits likely to affect revenue at your actual sale endpoint, such as weaning weight if you sell at weaning or traits relevant to retained ownership if you finish calves. Use realistic local prices and avoid assigning a dollar premium to genetic potential you cannot reasonably capture.
  2. Estimate lifetime cost. Include the purchase price, interest or financing, feed, veterinary care, breeding soundness examinations, labor, facilities, and expected depreciation, then account for cull value and how long you expect him to remain productive.
  3. Divide cost across expected calves. Estimate cows exposed, the share expected to calve and wean a calf, and the number of breeding seasons the bull is likely to serve. Include plausible injury, infertility, and mortality risk rather than assuming perfect service every year.
  4. Compare net value and set a limit. Subtract cost per weaned calf from the realistic added value per calf. The maximum bid should fit the operation’s ability to carry the cost and the uncertainty in the expected return.

Nebraska Extension’s worked example compares a $10,500 bull with a $7,000 bull. Under that example’s assumptions, the more expensive bull adds $41.25 in cost per weaned calf. If his calves are worth $60 more each—based on a 20-pound average weight advantage valued at the example’s $3 per pound—his net return is $18.74 more per calf. Those are example results, not a general performance promise.

What makes a bull worth paying more for?

A higher price is defensible only when the bull’s likely contribution matches the production and marketing decisions that matter to your operation. Oklahoma State Extension recommends looking for registration and pedigree information with a complete set of genetic values, including EPDs and bio-economic indexes; a passed breeding soundness exam (BSE); and fit with the buyer’s breeding objectives, production system, and marketing plan. Ask what a breeding soundness warranty covers and how its terms work, because warranties vary. Oklahoma State Extension

Illinois Extension advises selecting traits that return value in your market without sacrificing functionality, structural soundness, or docility. If you plan to retain daughters, also evaluate maternal traits such as heifer pregnancy, maternal calving ease, fertility, and cow energy requirements. Illinois Extension

Should you buy or lease a bull?

Buying gives you control of the bull but also exposes you to the purchase outlay and ongoing feed, veterinary, examination, labor, interest, facility, and depreciation costs. A bull serving more cows or remaining productive longer may lower cost per calf, but that depends on fertility, survival, and injury assumptions.

Leasing may reduce the capital tied up in a bull and some ownership expenses. An Arkansas Extension publication reports cash leases typically averaging $500–$700 per bull for one breeding season, while noting that rates vary with cattle-market conditions and bull quality. The publication’s date is not established here, so treat that amount as historical context—not a current local rate. Get current terms for your area and compare them with the full cost of owning a bull. Arkansas Extension

  • Review recent local sale results and catalogs for the relevant breed and region.

  • Confirm registration, pedigree, EPDs, and relevant bio-economic indexes.
  • Review the BSE documentation and the exact terms of any breeding soundness warranty.
  • Assess structural soundness, functionality, and docility, as well as maternal traits if retaining daughters.
  • Calculate expected ownership cost per weaned calf and a conservative estimate of added calf value; do not bid beyond a ceiling your operation can absorb.
