There is no single savings target for everyone who expects Social Security. Estimate your retirement spending, subtract your own projected Social Security benefit and other dependable income, then plan to cover the remaining gap. The savings amount depends on how long retirement lasts and on assumptions about inflation, taxes, investment returns, and withdrawals.
Start with your retirement income gap—not a national savings target
Your savings need is the amount required to help fund the expenses that your dependable retirement income does not cover. A practical first calculation is:

Keep the household budget and income estimate aligned. If you are planning as a couple, use a household spending estimate and include the applicable income sources for both people; do not compare a household budget with only one person’s benefit estimate. The SSA’s 2026 figure for an aged couple, for example, refers to a couple in which both members receive benefits, not to a benefit every couple can expect.
Build a personalized Social Security estimate
Your benefit depends on your earnings history and when you claim. The Social Security Administration (SSA) bases retirement benefits on your highest 35 years of earnings. Years without earnings can count as zeros; working longer may increase the benefit if new earnings replace lower-earning years in the calculation. See the SSA’s explanation of how stopping work affects retirement benefits.

Compare the estimated benefit at different claiming ages, including the age you currently intend to claim. You can adjust expected future earnings to reflect whether you plan to keep working and how much you expect to earn.
-
Record whether each estimate is expressed in today’s dollars or future inflated dollars. Keep it on the same dollar basis as your spending estimate.
When comparing a monthly benefit with an annual household budget, put both on the same time scale as well: annualize the monthly estimate before subtracting it from annual spending. If you model more than one claiming age, keep each age’s benefit estimate attached to its own scenario rather than blending amounts from different estimates.

Understand what the claiming-age comparison means
Claiming before your full retirement age reduces your monthly benefit. Full retirement age depends on birth year; it is 67 for people who attain age 62 in 2026. The SSA explains the age rules in its full retirement age FAQ. Compare your own estimated benefit at the ages you might claim rather than assuming that one age or one national figure applies to everyone.
For context, the SSA’s 2026 maximum-benefit examples are for a worker who earned the taxable maximum each year beginning at age 22 and starts benefits in 2026. The maximum monthly amounts shown are $2,969 at age 62, $4,152 at full retirement age, and $5,181 at age 70. These are examples for a specific high-earnings history, not typical benefits or estimates for an individual reader. The conditions are detailed in the SSA’s maximum retirement benefit FAQ.
Those examples illustrate why the claiming-age comparison matters, but they do not tell you which age is right for you or what savings balance you need. The planning question is how each estimated benefit changes the income gap under your own spending and other-income assumptions. Use the benefit estimate associated with the age you are actually testing, and make clear that a different claiming choice changes the scenario.

SSA figures can help orient your planning, but they should not substitute for your earnings-based estimate. For January 2026, after the 2026 cost-of-living adjustment, the SSA estimated an average monthly benefit of $2,071 for all retired workers. It estimated $3,208 for an aged couple when both members receive benefits. These are national averages, not promises about what you or your household will receive. The 2026 COLA fact sheet provides the estimates.
The SSA says Social Security provides about 40% of pre-retirement earnings. That is broad context, not an individual replacement rate or a savings formula: your own benefit depends on your record and claiming age, while your spending may not track your former earnings. In an October 7, 2026 blog post, the agency said: “To maintain your standard of living, you’ll need to supplement your Social Security benefits with additional income sources—like pensions, personal savings, investments, or part-time employment—to make up the remaining 60 percent or more.” Read the SSA’s retirement preparation publications overview for that framing.
In other words, the 40% figure is not a rule that says your savings must replace exactly 60% of your paycheck. Your retirement spending may be higher or lower than a percentage of prior earnings, and your benefit amount is determined by your own work record and claiming age. Use the figure to understand why additional income may matter, then rely on your budget and personalized estimate for the calculation.
Estimate the amount your savings must cover
1. Forecast spending in a consistent dollar basis
List expected retirement expenses in today’s dollars, including essential costs and discretionary spending. A standard income-replacement percentage is not a substitute for this household budget. If your spending estimate is in today’s dollars, use a Social Security estimate on the same basis for the initial gap calculation; do not subtract a future inflated-dollar benefit from a today’s-dollar budget without adjusting one of them.

Be explicit about what the spending figure represents: an annual household total, rather than a monthly amount or an individual budget. Separate essential expenses from discretionary spending if that helps you test different budgets. No standard expense level for retirees is established by the SSA figures cited here, so the estimate must come from your own expected costs rather than a generic figure.

2. Add dependable income without counting it twice
Include your personalized Social Security estimate at the claiming age you are modeling. Add other dependable income, such as a pension, if applicable. Make sure a source appears only once—for example, do not include a pension in an income total and then subtract it again as a separate line.
Use amounts for the same period and dollar basis. If a source is monthly and your spending estimate is annual, convert it before combining the figures. If you have no other dependable income to include, do not add a placeholder simply to complete the calculation; record the income that actually applies to your scenario.
3. Calculate the annual gap
Subtract Social Security and other dependable income from estimated spending. If the result is positive, that is the annual amount your savings and any other income sources need to help fund under the scenario. If it is zero or negative, that does not prove all risks are covered: actual spending and benefits can change, and the calculation reflects only the inputs you used.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Write down the inputs next to the result. That makes it easier to spot whether the gap came from a particular spending assumption, a claiming-age choice, or an income source—and to update the calculation if an input changes. The figure is a planning snapshot, not a guarantee that future costs or income will match it.
4. Convert the gap to a savings target using explicit assumptions
An annual income gap does not, by itself, determine the lump sum you need. Model how many years the income may be needed, whether the gap rises with inflation, how taxes affect withdrawals, what investment returns you assume, and how withdrawals are made. Different assumptions can produce different portfolio targets. There is no universal withdrawal rate or savings multiple established by the figures above, so any lump-sum result should be presented as a scenario—not a guaranteed or generally correct number.
For a useful estimate, show the assumptions alongside the result and compare more than one scenario when a key input is uncertain. For instance, you can test different retirement durations or withdrawal assumptions, but the resulting target is only as meaningful as those inputs. The sources here do not determine an appropriate return, tax rate, withdrawal pattern, or length of retirement for you; do not present a calculator output as an official SSA target.
Compare realistic scenarios before settling on a target
A useful estimate is not a single precise-looking number detached from its assumptions. Compare scenarios by changing inputs that matter to your household:

Claiming age: Compare your personalized SSA estimates for plausible claiming ages, including the effect on monthly income.

Dollar basis: Keep spending and income figures in today’s dollars or consistently convert them to future dollars before comparing them.
Change one assumption at a time when you want to see what is driving the result; then combine the assumptions that make up each complete household scenario. For example, compare the income gap under different claiming ages using the benefit estimate for each age, and separately test how a different spending budget affects that gap. Do not treat the maximum-benefit examples or national averages as substitute inputs in these scenarios.
This approach shows which choices and assumptions drive the savings gap. It also makes clear where a result is sensitive to uncertain future conditions rather than a fixed benefit amount.

Your expenses, pension income, tax situation, investment returns, retirement duration, and withdrawal approach are personal planning inputs, not established by the SSA benefit figures.
Use the benefit estimate as one part of the plan: pair it with your budget and other income, then make the savings target conditional on clearly stated assumptions. Revisit the estimate if your earnings expectations, intended claiming age, or spending assumptions change.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much will Social Security pay me when I retire?
There is no single amount that applies to everyone. Your benefit depends on your earnings history and claiming age. Check your earnings record and personalized estimates for different claiming ages through my Social Security; national averages and maximum-benefit examples are context, not a forecast for you.
Will Social Security be enough to retire on?
It depends on your retirement spending and other dependable income. Compare your estimated benefit and any applicable pension income with your expected household expenses. The SSA’s estimate that Social Security replaces about 40% of pre-retirement earnings is broad context, not a guarantee or an individual budget calculation.
How much do I need to save if I get Social Security?
First calculate the annual gap between expected spending and your estimated Social Security plus other dependable income. Turning that gap into a lump-sum target requires assumptions about retirement duration, inflation, taxes, investment returns, and withdrawals; the available figures do not establish one universal savings amount or withdrawal rate.
Does claiming Social Security at 62 reduce my retirement income?
Claiming before your full retirement age reduces your monthly benefit. Full retirement age depends on birth year; it is 67 for people who attain age 62 in 2026. Compare your own SSA estimates at plausible claiming ages and use the applicable estimate in each savings scenario.
Can I use the 2026 average benefit to estimate my savings need?
Use it only as context. The SSA estimated an average monthly benefit of $2,071 for all retired workers payable in January 2026 after the COLA, but your benefit depends on your record and claiming age. A personalized estimate is more useful for calculating your income gap.
The Bottom Line
Estimate your own Social Security benefit, compare it with a household retirement budget and other dependable income, and calculate the remaining annual gap. Then model a savings target using explicit assumptions about duration, inflation, taxes, returns, and withdrawals—rather than relying on a national average, a replacement percentage, or a universal savings multiple.
