A 2024 report said Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles reached about 64% of their EPA-rated range after three years. That does not mean their batteries lost 36% of capacity: the figure compares range with EPA estimates, not a direct measurement of battery degradation.
What the three-year Tesla range figure means
Futurism reported on May 30, 2024, that an analysis by Recurrent covering nearly 13,000 electric cars found Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles at three years of ownership achieved 64% of EPA-rated range. The same account said vehicles at zero miles were around 70% of their EPA-rated range. The underlying Recurrent analysis with those specific results is not available in the cited material, so these numbers should be treated as reported findings, not independently verified measurements.
The 64% figure is a share of an EPA range estimate. It is not a finding that a Tesla battery loses 36% of its capacity in three years. Range and battery capacity are related, but they are not interchangeable: how far a car travels on a charge also depends on the conditions and measurement method.
Futurism, attributing an example to InsideEVs, said a new 2023 Model 3 with a 315-mile EPA estimate would correspond to about 230 miles under the reported comparison. That is an illustrative calculation reported secondhand, not a separately verified range test.

- ✅ Perfect Fit & Compatibility: BCI Group Size 48 (H6), 12V 70Ah, 760CCA, 120RC. Dimensions: 10.94" L x 6.89" W x 7.48" H. Terminal: Tapered terminal (Left negative (-), Right positive (+)). Ensure proper fit by comparing the size, terminal position, and CCA with your original battery. This ensures compatibility and avoids any fitment issues for your vehicle.
- ✅ Reliable Starting Power in All Conditions: Delivers 760 Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) for reliable engine starts, even in freezing weather. This automotive battery is built to perform consistently within a wide temperature range from -22°F to 158°F, withstanding short-term extremes from -40°F to 75°F, ensuring maximum performance no matter the weather.
- ✅ Advanced AGM Technology for High Performance: Specially designed for vehicles with start-stop technology and those requiring greater power, this AGM battery delivers up to 2X the cycle life of conventional batteries. With its high-density negative paste, it ensures improved conductivity, longer battery life, and faster recharge times. Maintenance-free design—no need to add liquid or water.
- ✅ Durable & Safe Design: This group 48 battery is 18X more vibration-resistant than standard batteries, ensuring a longer service life and reliable performance. Its leak-proof, non-spillable design offers enhanced safety, and the absence of free acid guarantees stable performance, preventing acid leakage and internal corrosion. Ideal for tough conditions.
- ✅ Not for Deep Cycle Applications: Please note that this is a starting battery and is not designed for deep-cycle applications such as solar or marine use. It is ideal for vehicles with higher electrical accessory loads or those that need a high CCA starting battery with enhanced cyclic performance. Verify that the battery type and specifications match your vehicle's requirements.
Why EPA range, dashboard range, and real-world range differ
These figures answer different questions:
- EPA-rated range: A standardized estimate based on laboratory testing. Recurrent describes the test as taking place at room temperature, at speeds not exceeding 60 mph, with manufacturer-determined adjustments.
- Dashboard range: The vehicle’s displayed estimate. Recurrent says Tesla’s top-line dashboard range does not account for temperature, driving efficiency, or modifications made after purchase.
- Navigation estimate: A trip-specific prediction. Recurrent says Tesla destination navigation accounts for temperature and driving conditions.
- Actual driving range: The distance a driver gets between charges. Recurrent identifies speed, temperature, and climate-control use as factors that can affect it.
Because the measures do not match by design, a gap between EPA-rated range and distance driven is not, by itself, proof of battery damage. A useful comparison needs to specify which range measure it uses, the vehicle’s age and model, and the driving conditions.
How Recurrent measures Tesla range in real-world use
Recurrent says its Tesla Real-World Range feature uses the distance between charging sessions and local temperatures rather than relying on the dashboard’s headline range. In a July 2023 description, Recurrent said the feature drew on more than 360,000 charging cycles from over 12,000 Teslas.

That is the sample context for Recurrent’s feature and measurement approach; it is not the same statistic as the 64% figure reported by Futurism. Recurrent’s feature may help owners understand how range varies in use, but its broader data should not be used to independently validate the separate three-year result.
What Tesla’s reported degradation figure does—and does not—show
Futurism also reported that former Tesla investor-relations executive Martin Viecha disputed the comparison, noting that EPA figures differ from Tesla’s own. Futurism said Tesla study outputs showed about 20% battery degradation after 150,000 miles.

The underlying Tesla study was not available in the cited material, and that figure is not directly comparable with Recurrent’s reported share of EPA-rated range. One is described as battery degradation after a stated mileage; the other is a range comparison after three years. They use different measures, so neither figure resolves the other.
Recurrent co-founder and CEO Scott Case, quoted by Futurism from a Recurrent white paper, said: “The basic EPA testing protocol gets it wrong for all EVs, as it is performed in a laboratory at room temperature without exceeding 60 mph and allows for manufacturer-determined adjustments.” That is Case’s criticism of the test’s real-world fit, not evidence that the EPA estimate directly measures battery capacity.
