Norwich City said Emi Buendia’s June 2021 move to Aston Villa was a club-record deal, and later described the sale as the main source of a significant gain on player registrations. But the club’s published materials cited here do not give either the transfer fee or a standalone profit figure for Buendia. The evidence supports a substantial accounting gain—not a precise amount.
What Norwich City confirmed about the transfer
On 7 June 2021, Norwich announced that it had agreed a “club record deal” with Aston Villa for Buendia. The announcement said completion depended on the player’s final medical checks, and it did not disclose a fee. Norwich City’s announcement therefore establishes the record-breaking nature of the agreement, but not how much cash changed hands.
What the annual report says about Norwich’s gain
Norwich City Football Club PLC’s 2021/22 annual report says the significant gain on player registrations was mainly generated through Buendia’s sale to Aston Villa. It places the June 2021 transaction in the 2020/21 financial period. The report’s description is qualitative: it does not isolate Buendia’s contribution as a specific amount.
That distinction matters. “Gain on player registrations” is an accounting category, not another name for the gross transfer fee. The cited club materials do not establish the fee, Buendia’s isolated accounting gain, or a net figure after any related costs. It would therefore be misleading to turn the report’s word “significant” into a specific profit estimate.

Why the deal date and reporting period differ
The announcement came in June 2021, while the club’s annual-report discussion attributes the sale to the 2020/21 financial period. Companies House records Norwich City Football Club PLC’s group accounts made up to 30 June 2021, filed on 25 January 2022. The filing history helps identify the accounts period; it does not supply a Buendia-specific profit figure.
What can—and cannot—be concluded
- Established: Norwich called the agreed Aston Villa transfer a club-record deal.
- Established: The club later said Buendia’s sale was the main source of a significant gain on player registrations in the relevant financial reporting.
- Not established in these official materials: The exact transfer fee or a standalone accounting profit attributable to Buendia.
So Norwich did report a significant gain associated mainly with the Buendia sale, but the available official figures do not show exactly how much the club made from him.
