Re:

How Much of Your Portfolio Should Be in Stocks and Bonds?

There is no universal stock-and-bond percentage. Match your allocation to the goal, time horizon, ability to withstand losses, and willingness to stay invested.

There is no single stock-and-bond percentage that fits every investor. Choose a mix based on when you will need the money, how much loss your finances can absorb, and how much volatility you can tolerate without abandoning your plan. Then diversify within each asset class and decide in advance how you will rebalance.

Why there is no universal stock-and-bond percentage

Your allocation is the share of your investment portfolio held in different asset classes, such as stocks and bonds. It affects how much your portfolio may fluctuate and how much growth it may pursue, but it cannot eliminate investment risk or guarantee a particular outcome. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) says an appropriate allocation depends largely on your goal’s time horizon and your ability to tolerate risk. Vanguard also identifies age, income needs, and investment horizon as relevant considerations. The SEC’s allocation guide and Vanguard’s diversification guide both frame the decision as personal rather than one-size-fits-all.

That means an age-based rule of thumb can be a starting question, not a complete answer. Two people the same age may have different goals, financial reserves, income needs, and reactions to market declines. Likewise, the same person may reasonably choose different allocations for money intended for different purposes or dates.

In its March 31, 2026 bulletin, the SEC put the central principle simply: “The best mix for you depends on your personal risk tolerance and investing timeframe.” The bulletin is guidance, not a prescribed allocation; it does not establish a universally suitable stock or bond percentage.

Start with the date and purpose of the money

Write down what the portfolio is meant to fund and when you expect to use it. A long time horizon may give you more ability to ride out market volatility; a nearer spending need can make preserving value more important. This is a relationship to consider, not a promise that a long horizon prevents losses. Stocks can fall sharply even when an investor expects to hold them for years. The SEC’s Beginner’s Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing explains why investors often adjust an allocation as a goal approaches.

For a goal with a specific date, ask whether a large decline shortly before that date would force you to sell investments at an unfavorable time, postpone the goal, or find money elsewhere. If the answer is yes, that is a meaningful constraint on risk, even if the goal is technically years away. For a flexible, distant goal, you may have more time to wait through a downturn, but waiting is only useful if you can actually stick with the plan.

Keep separate goals conceptually separate. Money for a near-term expense need not take the same risks as retirement savings intended for use much later. A single percentage applied to all your accounts can obscure the different dates and purposes those accounts serve.

Measure risk capacity and risk tolerance separately

Risk capacity is financial: how much loss your circumstances could withstand without derailing essential plans. Risk tolerance is psychological: how much volatility you can bear and still follow your strategy. The SEC defines risk tolerance as “your ability and willingness to lose some or all of your original investment in exchange for potentially greater returns.” Both parts matter.

Check your financial capacity

  • Consider when you need to withdraw the money and whether that date can move.
  • Ask whether a market decline would leave you dependent on selling investments to meet essential expenses.
  • Account for income needs and other resources available for the goal, rather than considering the portfolio in isolation.
  • Consider whether the proposed allocation would jeopardize a necessary goal if returns are poor.

Check your willingness to stay invested

Picture a substantial decline in the stock portion of your portfolio. Would you be able to keep the plan, or would you feel compelled to sell after prices had fallen? An allocation is not workable merely because it looks reasonable in a calm market. If normal volatility would lead you to abandon it, a less aggressive mix may be more practical. Conversely, choosing a very cautious mix without considering a distant goal’s growth needs can also make the plan less suitable.

There is no exact questionnaire score or formula in the cited guidance that converts these answers into a required percentage. Use the questions to identify constraints and trade-offs, not to pretend that uncertainty can be removed.

Understand what stocks, bonds, and cash contribute

Holding General role and trade-off Risks to keep in view
Stocks Historically, stocks have offered higher potential returns than bonds and cash, alongside greater risk. Prices can be volatile, particularly over short periods. Historical performance does not guarantee future returns.
Bonds Generally less volatile and associated with more modest returns than stocks. Bond types differ. A bond’s price can fall when interest rates rise or when investors question the issuer’s creditworthiness. High-yield, or “junk,” bonds carry higher risk and can behave more like stocks.
Cash and cash equivalents Generally the safest and lowest-return category among these broad choices; useful to distinguish from investments for near-term needs. Inflation can reduce the purchasing power of cash over time.

These are broad descriptions, not guarantees about every holding. The SEC’s Beginner’s Guide describes the relative risk and return characteristics of stocks, bonds, and cash. Vanguard notes that bond-fund prices can be affected by interest-rate changes and concerns about issuers’ ability to pay. Bond holdings therefore need scrutiny too; the word “bond” alone does not mean risk-free.

Cash is not simply a third name for bonds. If a specific amount must be available soon, it may help to consider that money separately from a long-term investment allocation. The appropriate choice depends on the goal and circumstances; the sources do not set a cash percentage for every investor.

Use a decision framework instead of an age formula

Work through the following questions in order. The result should be a target mix you can explain, not a percentage selected because it is popular or because a single rule assigns it to your age.

  1. Name the goal. Identify what the portfolio is for and the likely date or period when withdrawals will begin.
  2. Identify hard constraints. Decide how much loss or volatility the goal can withstand, and whether you have other resources if markets are down when you need the funds.
  3. Assess your response to losses. Choose a level of fluctuation you could live with through a difficult market, rather than one you would abandon under stress.
  4. Set a stock-and-bond target. Balance the goal’s need for potential growth against the financial and emotional limits you identified. No percentage is optimal without those personal facts.
  5. Check what is inside each holding. Make sure stock and bond investments are diversified appropriately, and review concentration, fees, liquidity, and risks.
  6. Write a rebalancing rule. Decide how you will bring the portfolio back toward its targets if market movements change the mix.

For example, someone saving for a distant, flexible goal might be able to tolerate more fluctuation than someone who expects to rely on the same portfolio soon. That observation does not dictate a specific percentage: each still has to assess financial capacity, willingness to accept loss, income needs, and the details of the investments.

Diversify inside stocks and bonds

Choosing a stock-and-bond split does not by itself make a portfolio diversified. A portfolio can hold both asset classes and still be concentrated in a narrow set of companies, industries, issuers, or bond types. The SEC cautions that a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) is not necessarily diversified simply because it owns multiple securities; a narrowly focused fund can remain concentrated. Look through the label to the underlying holdings.

When reviewing a fund or other investment, examine what it owns, how concentrated those holdings are, what it costs, how readily you can sell it, and what risks apply. A broad fund may spread exposure across many holdings, but “broad” should be confirmed from its actual holdings and stated investment approach. Diversification can reduce the impact of a poor result in one holding, but it cannot ensure a profit or prevent losses when markets decline.

Bond diversification deserves the same attention. Issuer credit quality, maturity, and other characteristics can differ substantially between bond investments. In particular, high-yield bonds should not be treated as interchangeable with lower-risk bonds just because both are labeled fixed income. The SEC’s overview of investment products is a starting point for understanding the kinds of securities and funds investors may encounter; it is not a substitute for reviewing a specific fund’s disclosures.

Choose an implementation that fits your ability to manage it

You can build an allocation using individual securities or funds, or use a fund designed to manage an allocation. These are implementation choices, not different answers to the question of what mix is right for you.

  • Separate stock and bond funds: These can make the target weights visible and give you direct control over rebalancing. You are responsible for choosing diversified holdings, monitoring the mix, and taking account of fees and transaction or tax effects.
  • Target-date or lifecycle funds: These categories are designed around a target date or changing investment mix. Check the particular fund’s holdings, fees, glide path, and risks rather than assuming every fund with a similar date or label follows the same approach.
  • Personalized advice: An adviser may help account for individual goals and constraints. Confirm the adviser’s services, costs, and how any recommendation fits your circumstances; general educational guidance cannot determine an individual allocation.

Whichever route you choose, understand the investments and the ongoing responsibilities before committing. A product’s convenience does not establish that its allocation suits your time horizon or risk capacity. The sources cited here are U.S.-oriented; available products, account choices, and tax rules differ by jurisdiction.

Rebalance when the portfolio drifts

Market gains and losses change the relative size of holdings. If stocks rise faster than bonds, the portfolio can become stock-heavy compared with its target; if stocks fall, the stock share can shrink. Rebalancing means bringing the portfolio back toward the allocation you selected. It does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss.

Two common approaches are to review on a calendar schedule or to act when an allocation moves beyond a chosen percentage threshold. Vanguard illustrates the threshold approach with a hypothetical portfolio targeted at 70% stocks and 30% bonds and a five-percentage-point trigger. Those figures are an example of how a rule can be specified, not a recommendation or an empirically optimal setting. Vanguard describes both calendar and threshold methods and notes that rebalancing generally works best relatively infrequently.

Before selling investments to rebalance, consider transaction costs and possible tax consequences. Depending on the account, jurisdiction, and investments, those costs may affect how you implement the adjustment. A rule can help prevent day-to-day market emotion from dictating the allocation, but the rule itself should be chosen to fit your situation and followed with care.

Review the allocation when your circumstances change

Revisit the plan when the goal’s date or flexibility changes, when your need for portfolio income changes, or when your financial ability to withstand losses changes. A changed situation may justify a new target; ordinary market movement by itself may instead call for rebalancing back to the existing target. Keeping those decisions distinct helps avoid changing strategy simply because recent performance feels uncomfortable.

Age can be relevant because it may coincide with a shorter investment horizon or changing income needs, but age alone does not tell you how much to own in stocks and bonds. The practical question is whether the current mix still supports the goal and remains tolerable given your resources and likely withdrawals. Make any change deliberately, update your rebalancing rule if needed, and confirm that the holdings still provide the diversification you intended.

Common mistakes that can undermine an allocation

  • Treating a rule of thumb as a personal recommendation: A percentage derived from age or a generic template cannot account for your goal date, finances, or comfort with losses.
  • Confusing more bonds with no risk: Bonds can lose value, and high-yield bonds carry elevated risk.
  • Assuming a fund name proves diversification: Review actual holdings and concentration rather than relying only on the label.
  • Ignoring fees, liquidity, taxes, or trading costs: These can affect the practical result of a strategy and the cost of rebalancing.
  • Changing the target in response to every market move: Decide whether you are correcting drift under a preselected rule or changing the plan because your goals and circumstances have materially changed.

A sound allocation is a reasoned balance between the growth opportunity you need and the losses you can financially and emotionally bear. Its usefulness depends not only on the chosen percentages, but also on diversified holdings and a plan you can maintain.
