A ₹1 crore retirement corpus does not produce one guaranteed monthly pension. If you withdraw 4% in the first year, the starting amount is ₹4 lakh a year, or about ₹33,333 a month before tax. At 5%, it is ₹5 lakh a year, or about ₹41,667 a month. Those are withdrawal illustrations, not universally safe rates or lifetime guarantees.
A November 2024 PFRDA illustration combines a ₹40 lakh annuity with ₹6 lakh of annual withdrawals from the remaining ₹60 lakh. Under its stated assumptions, the first-year total is approximately ₹8.85 lakh to ₹9.40 lakh, equivalent to about ₹73,750–₹78,333 a month before tax. The result depends on the annuity option, an assumed 8% return and the example’s age and spouse details.

Three different ways to turn ₹1 crore into retirement income
The monthly number changes because “income” can mean interest, a planned withdrawal from investments, or a payment received after handing capital to an annuity provider. These mechanisms have different effects on principal, inflation protection, liquidity and heirs.

| Annuity | You exchange some or all of the capital for a contractual income stream. | Depends on age, rates and options such as spouse continuation or return of purchase price. | More predictable payments, but less liquidity and potentially less capital available to heirs. |
| Interest-oriented products | You place money in products that quote an interest rate and pay according to their rules. | At a purely arithmetic 7.4%, ₹61,667 a month; at 8.2%, ₹68,333 a month. | Eligibility, investment ceilings, rate changes, tax and payout terms prevent applying the rate blindly to the whole corpus. |

What 4% and 5% withdrawals really mean
Four per cent starting withdrawal
Four per cent of ₹1 crore is ₹4 lakh in the first year. Dividing by 12 gives approximately ₹33,333 per month. In a portfolio approach, this is a starting withdrawal amount, not a promise that the same purchasing power will last for life. Investment returns, inflation, fees, tax and the timing of market losses determine how long the corpus survives.
Five per cent starting withdrawal
Five per cent is ₹5 lakh in the first year, or approximately ₹41,667 per month. The extra ₹8,333 a month compared with a 4% start increases spending capacity but also increases the chance that withdrawals consume capital during weak markets. A retiree who raises the rupee withdrawal every year for inflation will draw more than 5% of the original corpus over time.
Why a monthly division can mislead
₹4 lakh divided by 12 is only a budgeting equivalent. A systematic withdrawal plan might sell investments on a chosen date, while interest or annuity payments may follow their own schedule. Markets do not deliver a smooth 4% or 5% each month. Keep a cash reserve for near-term expenses so that a market fall does not force the sale of long-term assets at depressed prices.

The PFRDA NPS illustration: about ₹73,750–₹78,333 a month equivalent
PFRDA’s November 2024 bulletin presents a specific NPS example for a ₹1 crore corpus. It allocates ₹40 lakh to purchase an annuity and leaves ₹60 lakh for systematic lump-sum withdrawals. The example withdraws ₹6 lakh a year from that ₹60 lakh balance and assumes the remaining balance earns 8% annually.
| Component | Amount in the illustration | Monthly equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Systematic withdrawal from ₹60 lakh | ₹6 lakh a year | ₹50,000 |
| Annuity with return of purchase price | Approximately ₹2.85 lakh a year | Approximately ₹23,750 |
| Annuity without return of purchase price | Approximately ₹3.40 lakh a year | Approximately ₹28,333 |
| Total with return of purchase price | Approximately ₹8.85 lakh a year | Approximately ₹73,750 |
| Total without return of purchase price | Approximately ₹9.40 lakh a year | Approximately ₹78,333 |
The annuity figures assume a 60-year-old subscriber with a 60-year-old spouse under a joint-life option. The annual amounts are converted to monthly equivalents here; the actual annuity payment schedule and quotation can differ. The 8% return is an assumption in the illustration, not a guaranteed future return. Nor does the example establish that every ₹1 crore NPS account will produce these amounts.
What changes the NPS annuity payment
NPS annuity choices can include single-life income, a guaranteed payment period, a 3% annual increase, continuation to a spouse and return of the purchase price. A higher starting pension may come with less capital returned to nominees, while survivor protection or an escalating payment can reduce the initial amount. Compare the written quotation for each option rather than comparing only the headline first-year pension.

NPS exit rules depend on the subscriber category
The Department of Financial Services explains that an NPS pension depends on contributions, investment returns and the portion of the corpus used to buy an annuity. Its earlier general normal-exit framework describes up to 60% as a lump sum and at least 40% for an annuity.
A Ministry of Finance/PIB summary dated 19 December 2025 describes amendments for specified non-government All Citizen and Corporate Sector subscribers: up to 80% may be taken as a lump sum and at least 20% used for an annuity. The same summary says the government-sector normal-exit split remains up to 60% lump sum and at least 40% annuity. The applicable rule can depend on sector, model, corpus and implementation status, so confirm the current provision before planning an individual withdrawal.
What the quoted MIS and SCSS rates imply—and what they do not
India Post’s savings page lists the Post Office Monthly Income Scheme (MIS) at 7.4% per annum, payable monthly, and the Senior Citizens Savings Scheme (SCSS) at 8.2% per annum. The page was accessed on 9 October 2026; rates and rules should be checked again when investing.

For scale only, multiplying ₹1 crore by those rates gives:
- 7.4%: ₹7.4 lakh a year, or approximately ₹61,667 a month.
- 8.2%: ₹8.2 lakh a year, or approximately ₹68,333 a month.
These calculations do not mean you can place the entire ₹1 crore into MIS or SCSS. Eligibility requirements and scheme ceilings limit how much can be allocated, and payout terms and tax affect the cash flow. Treat the percentages as quoted scheme rates, not as permission to multiply the rate by an unrestricted corpus.
Can ₹1 crore provide ₹50,000 a month?
₹50,000 a month equals ₹6 lakh a year, or 6% of ₹1 crore. A portfolio could start at that withdrawal, but it would consume capital whenever the net return is below 6% and would need a plan for inflation and bad market years. It is not the same as earning 6% interest without risk.

On a purely arithmetic basis, a 7.4% rate applied to an unrestricted ₹1 crore would exceed ₹50,000 a month, and an 8.2% rate would exceed it as well. The MIS and SCSS eligibility and ceiling constraints mean those calculations cannot be treated as an investable plan. An annuity may also produce ₹50,000 or more depending on age and selected guarantees, but the purchase permanently exchanges capital for the insurer’s payment obligation and the chosen survivor benefits.
Inflation determines whether the income remains usable
A fixed ₹50,000 a month buys less over time as prices rise. Portfolio withdrawals can be increased, but every increase raises the withdrawal rate. An annuity with a 3% annual increase offers some escalation, although its starting payment is generally different from a level-income option. Interest products may reset their rates or keep a nominal payment unchanged. Build a separate inflation allowance for healthcare, housing and other expenses rather than treating today’s monthly figure as a lifetime budget.
Tax, liquidity and family protection
Tax
The figures above are before tax. Interest, withdrawals and annuity income can have different tax treatment, and the applicable result depends on the product, account structure, income and law in force when the payment is received. Calculate the post-tax cash flow before committing to a spending level.
Liquidity
A portfolio leaves assets available for emergencies, although selling during a market decline can damage sustainability. An annuity generally provides stronger payment certainty but gives up access to the purchase amount except to the extent the selected option provides a return of purchase price or other benefit. Keep emergency funds outside an irreversible annuity commitment.
Spouse and nominees
Joint-life continuation can protect a surviving spouse. Return-of-purchase-price options can direct capital back to nominees but usually reduce the starting annuity compared with an option that does not return the purchase price. Decide whether the priority is the retiree’s maximum initial income, the spouse’s continuing income, or an inheritance, then compare options on that basis.
A practical way to plan income from ₹1 crore
- Set the spending target. Separate essential expenses, discretionary spending and irregular costs such as medical treatment. Convert only the essential budget into a required monthly income.
- Choose the income mechanism. Decide how much should come from a portfolio withdrawal, how much from an annuity and how much from interest-paying products. Do not assume one rate applies to every rupee.
- Stress-test the withdrawal. Run the plan with lower returns, higher inflation and several years of withdrawals after a market fall. A 4% or 5% first-year illustration is not a safety certification.
- Check access and eligibility. For MIS, SCSS and NPS, verify age, subscriber category, current rules, ceilings, payment frequency and documentation before allocating money.
- Obtain an actual annuity quotation. Specify age, spouse age, joint-life terms, escalation, guarantee period and return-of-purchase-price preference. Compare the resulting annual payment, not a generic online estimate.
- Calculate the after-tax amount. Apply the tax treatment relevant to each component and leave a reserve for expenses that cannot be reduced in a bad market.
- Review annually. Reassess spending, inflation, portfolio value, health needs and survivor arrangements. A withdrawal that was reasonable at retirement may become excessive after a prolonged loss or a large spending increase.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling ₹33,333 or ₹41,667 a guaranteed lifelong pension when they are only 4% and 5% starting withdrawals.
- Presenting ₹61,667 or ₹68,333 as available MIS or SCSS income from the whole ₹1 crore without checking scheme limits.
- Quoting the PFRDA example as a personal NPS entitlement despite its 8% return assumption and specific 60-year-old couple profile.
- Ignoring the difference between a level annuity and one with spouse continuation, escalation or return of purchase price.
- Budgeting from gross income and forgetting tax, inflation, healthcare costs and emergency liquidity.
- Using an NPS lump-sum/annuity split from the wrong subscriber category or an outdated rule.
Bottom line for a ₹1 crore corpus
For a transparent portfolio-withdrawal illustration, plan around ₹33,333 a month at a 4% first-year withdrawal or ₹41,667 at 5%, before tax and without a lifetime guarantee. The PFRDA NPS example reaches approximately ₹73,750–₹78,333 a month equivalent only by combining a ₹6 lakh annual withdrawal with an annuity purchased using ₹40 lakh, under stated assumptions. MIS and SCSS headline rates show scale but cannot be multiplied across the entire corpus because eligibility and ceilings apply. Your sustainable monthly income depends on the mechanism, inflation plan, tax, liquidity needs, spouse protection and the rules that apply to your account.
