A useful starting point is enough accessible savings to cover three to six months of essential living expenses. Your own target depends on how steady your income is, how much of your budget is hard to reduce, and how many people rely on it. The range is a planning rule of thumb, not a guaranteed amount or a universal requirement.
Calculate a target from essential monthly expenses
Start with what you would need to keep paying if your income stopped or a major disruption reduced it. The calculation is simple: add up essential costs for one month, then multiply that total by the number of months you want to cover.

Include housing, utilities, food, debt payments, insurance, and taxes. For household budgets, count the necessary costs for everyone who depends on your income. The Associated Press’s March 2026 guidance from Morningstar’s Christine Benz and Virginia’s Virginia Money Playbook 2025 both describe building an emergency-fund estimate from essential expenses, then selecting a coverage period.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Housing: rent or mortgage and other unavoidable housing costs.
- Utilities and food: basic services and groceries, rather than discretionary upgrades or restaurant spending.
- Debt, insurance, and taxes: required payments and obligations that would not disappear during a setback.
Use actual bills and recent spending rather than a generic national budget. If a cost varies, estimate a representative monthly amount from your own records. A spreadsheet, notes app, or paper list is enough; buying a planner is not necessary.

Formula
Monthly essential expenses × selected number of months = emergency-fund target.
For example, if a household’s essential costs are $4,000 a month, three months would be $12,000 and six months would be $24,000. These figures illustrate the arithmetic only; they are not a recommendation for a household with different costs or circumstances.
Choose how many months fit your circumstances
Three to six months is a starting range, not a one-size-fits-all answer. The lower or higher end should reflect both the chance of an income interruption and your ability to manage one without quickly taking on debt or selling assets.

A larger cushion may make sense if your income is irregular, finding a specialized job could take time, you support dependents, or a large share of your monthly costs is fixed. It can also be reasonable when you have limited ability to cut expenses quickly. These are reasons to consider more months, not a formula that guarantees a particular balance.

Consider a smaller reserve when you have more flexibility
If income is predictable and you could reduce substantial expenses quickly, you may decide that a shorter reserve is workable. That decision still depends on your obligations and access to other liquid resources. The sources behind the three-to-six-month guidance do not establish a single right amount for every household.
Make the choice deliberately: identify the kind of disruption you want the fund to bridge, estimate how long replacing income or adjusting expenses might take, and select a month count within or beyond the starting range that matches that risk. A target is a planning decision, not a promise that every emergency will be fully covered.
Keep emergency cash separate from money for known goals
A down payment, tuition bill, planned move, or other known purchase has a different purpose and timetable from an emergency reserve. Keep those amounts distinct in your budget so a planned expense does not make your emergency fund appear larger than it is. The same savings account might hold multiple labeled goals, but the totals should remain clear to you.
This distinction also helps you judge progress fairly. If you have saved $15,000 but $8,000 is already earmarked for a near-term purchase, do not count the full $15,000 toward an emergency target. The amount available for an unexpected disruption is what matters for that target.

What a high-yield savings account does—and does not—tell you
“High-yield” describes the account’s interest rate relative to other savings options; it does not by itself establish the account’s insurance status, access rules, or whether its rate will remain the same. Rates and terms can change, and no current provider rates are established here. Check the institution’s current disclosures before opening an account or moving your reserve.
For emergency money, weigh the rate alongside how quickly and reliably you can get to the funds. Confirm which withdrawal methods are available, how long transfers take, whether transaction limits apply, and whether fees or minimums could affect the balance. The CFPB notes that bank or credit-union money market accounts may have transaction limits or minimum-deposit requirements; account terms vary, so verify them with the institution.
Money market deposit account versus money market mutual fund
The names are similar, but these products are not interchangeable. A bank money market deposit account is a deposit account and may qualify for FDIC insurance when held at an FDIC-insured bank, subject to applicable limits and ownership-category rules. A money market mutual fund is an investment, not a savings or checking account, and is not an FDIC-insured deposit. The CFPB states: “A money market mutual fund account is considered an investment, and it is not a savings or checking account.”

Check deposit insurance if your balances are large
FDIC coverage generally protects eligible deposits up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. The limit is not simply a cap across every account a person holds: eligible accounts at the same bank in the same ownership category are combined when coverage is determined. Other ownership categories may receive separate coverage when their requirements are met.
That means the balance in your high-yield savings account is not the only amount to consider. Check your other deposits at the same bank and how the accounts are owned. For a large or complex balance, use the FDIC’s Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator and review its Deposit Insurance FAQs. Confirm that the institution is FDIC-insured and that the specific product is an eligible deposit. Credit-union accounts have a separate insurance system; verify applicable coverage with the institution rather than treating FDIC coverage as universal.

A higher advertised rate can be less useful if access is slow or a balance condition is easy to miss. Compare the details that affect whether your emergency money will be available when you need it.
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Deposit or investment status | Confirm whether the product is an insured bank deposit, a credit-union deposit, or an investment. Protection depends on the product and institution, not the marketing label. |
| Access and transfer timing | Review withdrawal methods, transfer times, and any transaction limits so you understand how quickly funds can be used. |
| Fees and minimums | Check account-opening requirements, minimum deposits or balances, and fees that could reduce your savings or restrict eligibility. |
| Rate terms | Find out whether the rate is variable, introductory, or conditional on a balance or other requirement. Recheck current terms because rates can change. |
The CFPB’s money market account explanation describes possible minimum-deposit requirements and transaction limits for money market accounts. It does not establish a current rate for any particular provider. Verify the live disclosures for the exact account you are considering.

Use national savings figures as context, not as your target
The Federal Reserve’s 2026 report on the economic well-being of U.S. households reports responses from 2025. It found that 55 percent of U.S. adults said they had set aside money for three months of expenses in an emergency or rainy-day fund. That was unchanged from 2024 and below the 59 percent high reported for 2021.
In the same report, 30 percent said they could not cover three months of expenses by any of the means listed in the survey. Separately, 63 percent said they would cover a hypothetical $400 emergency expense using “cash or its equivalent.” That measure includes cash, savings, or a credit card paid off at the next statement; it is not a measure of savings alone.
These figures describe reported financial preparedness, not a recommended high-yield savings balance. They do not mean that a particular percentage of expenses is right for your household, and the Federal Reserve does not prescribe an account target. See the Federal Reserve’s 2026 report for the survey context.

A practical way to set and maintain your balance
- Total one month of essentials. Use bills and spending records to estimate necessary housing, utilities, food, debt, insurance, and tax costs.
- Select a coverage period. Consider income predictability, dependents, fixed costs, job-search prospects, and how much you could cut if income fell.
- Subtract money with another purpose. Keep known near-term spending separate from the emergency reserve calculation.
- Choose an account by its terms as well as its rate. Check access, transfer timing, limits, fees, minimums, rate conditions, institution, and deposit-insurance status.
- Review when your circumstances change. Recalculate after a lasting change in essential expenses, household responsibilities, or income stability; a stale target may no longer fit.
For more detail on setting the expense-based reserve, see the Associated Press’s March 2026 article, “How to set and invest your emergency fund”, and Virginia’s Virginia Money Playbook 2025.
