Re:

How Much Money Do Members of the Royal Family Make Per Year?

There is no single annual royal salary. The Sovereign Grant supports the Royal Household, while Duchy income and private earnings are separate—and not fully disclosed for every royal.

There is no single annual salary for members of the UK Royal Family. The Sovereign Grant funds the Royal Household’s official work rather than paying each royal; the King also has income connected to the Duchy of Lancaster, while the Prince of Wales is funded predominantly by the Duchy of Cornwall. Personal income is a separate matter, and official sources do not publish a complete, comparable annual-income table for every royal.

What the Royal Family’s published figures mean

Several different kinds of money are often blurred together: public funding for official duties, income from the Duchies, private income, and tax paid. These figures describe different recipients and purposes, so they cannot be added up into a single “royal salary.”

Money or figure Recipient or basis What it represents
Sovereign Grant Royal Household Public funding for the King’s official duties and upkeep of occupied royal palaces; not an individual salary.
Duchy of Lancaster income Held for the Sovereign Income associated with the King’s Privy Purse, used for official and private expenditure.
Duchy of Cornwall annual net surplus Prince of Wales Income that predominantly funds his life and work, including public and charitable activities; not a salary as described by the Royal Household.
Personal investments and private estates King Personal income used for private expenses; the Royal Household does not provide a comparable annual figure here.
Tax bill King Tax paid in a stated tax year, not a disclosure of gross income.

The Crown Estate is distinct from the King’s private property. Its profits are not personal earnings; its net surplus is one input in the statutory calculation of the Sovereign Grant. The Royal Household’s explanation of royal finances and HM Treasury’s review of the percentage rate describe the arrangements.

How much is the Sovereign Grant?

The grant is money provided by HM Treasury to support the Royal Household’s official work, including the upkeep of occupied royal palaces. The Royal Household reported a grant of £86.3 million for financial year 2024–25 and £132.1 million for 2025–26. Neither amount is a yearly payment to each member of the Royal Family. The Royal Household’s annual financial information gives the figures and explains the grant’s purpose.

The 2025–26 amount followed the statutory calculation using 12% of the Crown Estate income account net surplus for the base year, along with rounding, a floor tied to the preceding grant, and a reserve test. The 12% rate was the first step in that calculation, not a share paid directly to the King. HM Treasury’s review sets out the calculation.

The grant for 2026–27 is £137.9 million. Parliament reports a planned grant of £99.9 million for 2027–28 following a rate reset, but that lower amount depends on legislation: the Government said current law prevents the grant from falling below the previous year’s amount. The House of Commons Library briefing explains the future amount and legislative condition.

What the King and Prince of Wales receive

The King and the Duchy of Lancaster

The King’s Privy Purse is historically associated with income from the Duchy of Lancaster. The Royal Household says this income supports both official and private expenditure. It mainly covers official costs not met by the Sovereign Grant, including expenses incurred by other Royal Family members. The Duchy is held for the Sovereign in that role and is separate from the Crown Estate. The King also has personal income from investments and private estates for private expenses; the published material does not provide a complete annual total for these sources.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchy of Cornwall

The Prince of Wales receives the Duchy of Cornwall’s annual net surplus. The estate is held in trust, and its capital assets are not his to sell; its income supports his public and charitable work. The Royal Household says he does not receive money from the Sovereign Grant, although that grant partly supports his official activities. The reviewed official information does not state the latest annual Duchy surplus, so it does not support a current exact figure for his income.

What the King’s tax bills do—and do not—show

The Royal Household reported the King’s tax bill as £11.7 million for 2023–24 and £12.9 million for 2024–25. A tax bill is not gross income: it cannot be used by itself to calculate how much the King earned, and it does not reveal a comparable income figure for other members. The Royal Household’s financial information gives the amounts and years.

Can you compare annual earnings for every royal?

No. The official sources reviewed do not disclose a complete, current schedule of each member’s private income. They explain some institutional funding and estate income, but not a comparable annual personal-income figure for every royal. In particular, a Royal Household grant, a Duchy’s net surplus, an individual’s private income, estate capital, and tax paid are not interchangeable measures.

The Royal Household reported more than 1,900 public engagements by Royal Family members in financial year 2024–25, and 2,273 engagements by working members in 2025–26. Those activity counts describe official work, not pay or income. The Royal Household’s annual reporting provides the figures.
