In Division I, the NCAA described a year-one school-wide cap of approximately $20.5 million on financial benefits a school may direct to student-athletes. That is not a basketball-only pool or an individual player’s pay. Players may also earn separate money or other compensation through third-party name, image and likeness (NIL) deals.
What the different kinds of compensation mean
| Type | What it is | What the available figures establish |
|---|---|---|
| School-provided benefits | Financial benefits a Division I school may direct to student-athletes under the House settlement framework. | The NCAA described an approximately $20.5 million year-one annual cap per school; it does not state an individual basketball player’s share. |
| Third-party NIL | Compensation from a company, brand or person for use of an athlete’s name, image or likeness. | Deal amounts vary; the NCAA materials cited here do not establish a typical or median amount. |
| Scholarship and educational support | Tuition, room and board, academic support and other education-related or athletic benefits. | These can have substantial value, but the materials do not say every player receives a full scholarship. |
| Settlement back damages | Payments arising from claims about historical restrictions on athlete compensation. | The NCAA describes approximately $2.78 billion to be distributed over ten years; this is not current annual pay. |
How much can a school pay its players?
In a June 6, 2025 letter, NCAA President Charlie Baker described an annual cap of 22.5%, approximately $20.5 million in year one, on financial benefits a Division I school may direct to student-athletes under the court-approved House settlement. The figure applies at the school level across its student-athletes—not to each athlete, not just to basketball, and not as a required payout. Schools decide how to allocate benefits, and the cap does not show how much a particular team or player receives.
The adopted Division I framework counts institutional NIL payments and specified direct institutional benefits toward a school’s benefits cap, subject to the rules and exemptions. Its cap year runs from July 1 through June 30. Because the pool is not an individual entitlement and is not necessarily divided equally or fully used, dividing the cap by a roster would not produce a reliable player salary.
How much can players make from third-party NIL?
NIL deals are separate from a school’s benefits pool. The NCAA defines an NIL deal as an agreement in which an athlete receives money, products or services for allowing a company, brand or person to use the athlete’s name, image or likeness. Examples include sponsored social-media posts, autograph signings, camps or clinics, promotional appearances, endorsements and sponsorships.
The NCAA’s adopted Division I rules say benefits from outside individuals or entities do not count against an institution’s cap. That does not mean every outside payment is exempt from other rules: reporting and review requirements apply to covered NIL agreements.

Reporting and review rules
Under the cited adopted Division I rule, noninstitutional NIL contracts or payment terms totaling $600 or more must be reported to the designated clearinghouse for review. Related deals or payments from the same or substantially same third party—including affiliates or entities under common ownership—may be aggregated. The NCAA describes additional reporting timelines and requirements for high-school prospects, junior-college athletes moving to Division I and transfers. An athlete should check current NCAA and College Sports Commission guidance and ask campus compliance staff how the rules apply to their circumstances.
An NCAA notice dated April 1, 2025 said a consent judgment allowed prospective and transferring Division I athletes to discuss, negotiate and enter certain commercial NIL agreements with third parties before enrolling. The notice also said the judgment did not permit compensation for athletic performance or achievement, or for work that has not and will never be performed. It should not be read as a blanket authorization for recruiting inducements.

Are scholarships the same as getting paid?
No. A scholarship can reduce a player’s education costs, and tuition, room and board have financial value, but those benefits are different from cash earnings. The NCAA’s settlement summary also identifies educational grants, tutoring and academic support, medical and mental-health resources, nutrition support, life-skills development, coaching and training, and extended medical coverage as existing benefits.
The settlement framework replaced scholarship limits with roster limits and allows schools to offer partial or full scholarships subject to those roster limits. A player should not assume that every teammate—or every college basketball player—receives a full scholarship.

What is the $2.78 billion settlement figure?
The NCAA’s settlement summary describes approximately $2.78 billion in back damages, distributed over ten years—about $280 million a year across the settlement distribution. These damages relate to historical claims and are separate from ongoing school-provided benefits and future NIL contracts. The summary says plaintiffs determine the distributions; it does not establish a fixed payment for every current basketball player.
Why there is no reliable average to quote
The NCAA figures above describe a school-level framework and settlement distributions, not a player-by-player compensation dataset. The materials do not establish a typical or median current earning, a basketball-specific share of a school’s pool, how many schools use the maximum, or a comparable earnings breakdown across NCAA divisions. Without those data, an average or NIL range would be speculation. The Division I cap and rules described here should not be treated as a pay estimate for players in other divisions.
