The reported trigger was his second competitive start for the senior national team—not simply being called up. The amount and contract condition have not been publicly confirmed by either club.
How much is Middlesbrough expected to receive?
The payment is reported to be around £2 million. Yahoo Sports described the figure as believed to be around that amount; it is an estimate, not a publicly disclosed or confirmed settlement. Yahoo Sports
There is no public primary-source confirmation of the clause’s exact wording, the final amount payable, or whether Middlesbrough has received the money. It is therefore more accurate to say Boro could receive—or is reported to be due—the payment than to say the club has banked it.
Did the England call-up itself trigger the payment?
According to the report, no. The condition was reportedly tied to Spence making two competitive starts for England. His second start crossed that threshold. A call-up is selection for the squad; it does not by itself mean a player has appeared, let alone started a competitive match.

Why would Tottenham owe Middlesbrough money?
Spence moved from Middlesbrough to Tottenham in July 2022. Tottenham confirmed the transfer but did not publish the detailed terms. BBC Sport reported that the deal could be worth up to £20 million, while the reported England-start payment is an additional conditional element said to be in the agreement. The clause itself is not publicly available in the cited accounts. Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer announcement · BBC Sport’s report on the 2022 transfer
What is confirmed about Spence’s England involvement?
Tottenham announced Spence’s first senior England call-up in September 2025, and its international report records that he made his senior debut that month. That establishes the call-up and debut; it does not independently verify the financial clause or its value. Tottenham’s report on Spence’s first England call-up

Is the later Inter transfer related to Middlesbrough’s payment?
No. Spence later moved from Tottenham to Inter in 2026. Sky Sports reported a £30 million fee and a 10 per cent sell-on clause for Tottenham. Those terms concern the separate Tottenham-to-Inter transaction; they are not the reported payment to Middlesbrough for Spence’s England starts. Sky Sports’ report on the Inter transfer
