How Much Is Tim Walz Worth? What 2024 Estimates and Public Records Show

There is no authoritative, current public figure for Tim Walz’s net worth. In 2024, TIME reported two different estimates of the Walz household’s wealth: about $800,000, attributed to a Wall Street Journal analysis, and just over $1 million, attributed to Forbes. Those are third-party estimates, not audited totals. Public filings and tax figures provide useful context, but they do not add up to a complete household balance sheet.

What is Tim Walz’s estimated net worth?

The most responsible short answer is that published 2024 estimates placed the Walz household’s net worth at roughly $800,000 to just over $1 million, but the estimates differ and neither is an official calculation. TIME’s 2024 account attributed the roughly $800,000 estimate to the Wall Street Journal and the estimate just above $1 million to Forbes.

The available coverage does not provide enough detail to reconcile the two figures. They may differ in the records or valuation assumptions used, including how pensions and retirement benefits are treated, and whether the figure covers Walz alone or the household. Neither should be presented as a definitive or current balance-sheet value.

Why the public financial records do not establish net worth

Net worth is assets minus liabilities. A disclosure can identify certain reportable interests without showing every asset, debt, valuation, or household holding needed to calculate that figure. As the U.S. Office of Government Ethics explains in its Public Financial Disclosure Guide, updated in November 2024, federal financial disclosure forms request only the information required by law; they are not complete personal balance sheets.

The Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board page for Walz, last updated January 26, 2026, lists Minnesota as an income source and shows no reported business ownership, securities, real property, honoraria, or government agency interests in the categories displayed. These are disclosure categories, not an inventory of everything Walz or his household owns or owes. AFP also notes that Minnesota’s statement of economic interests requires disclosure of investments above $10,000; an unlisted interest is not proof that no asset exists.

Income, salary and net worth are different figures

Taxable income and reported total income describe money received during a period; salary is compensation for a job. Net worth is the value of assets minus liabilities at a particular point in time. The figures below come from different sources and years, so they should not be combined or substituted for a net-worth estimate.

Figure What it measures and source
About $299,000 in 2023 Total income for the Walz household, including $135,000 from pensions or annuities, according to the Wall Street Journal analysis of 2023 tax returns as reported by TIME in 2024.
$254,832 in 2023 Combined taxable income, according to Walz campaign tax statements reviewed by AFP. This is a different measure from the broader total-income figure above.
$127,676 in 2022 Combined taxable income, according to Walz campaign tax statements reviewed by AFP.
$127,629 The governor’s salary Walz said he would accept, according to the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library’s salary schedule. This is not a net-worth figure.

What is known about Walz’s pensions and other assets?

Retirement benefits are one reason household estimates can vary: pensions are financial assets, but their reported values and treatment depend on the disclosure or estimation method. TIME described the Walzes’ financial picture as including state and federal pensions from Walz’s teaching and congressional service, life insurance and college savings. It also reported that Gwen Walz earned income from a Minnesota public school and a law firm. The couple sold their former home in 2019 for $304,000 after moving to the governor’s residence; that sale price is historical, not a current property valuation.

AFP’s review of earlier disclosures found that a 2019 congressional disclosure listed Minnesota pension assets in a range of $81,000 to $215,000, life insurance worth up to $50,000, and a college savings account worth up to $15,000. An earlier disclosure listed a Mankato home and rental income of up to $5,000. These figures come from different disclosures and years; adding them together would not produce a reliable current net-worth calculation.

How Walz’s governor salary rate compares with his stated salary

The salary schedule distinguishes the statutory rate for the office from the amount Walz said he would accept. For context, the Legislative Reference Library lists a statutory governor salary rate of $149,550 effective July 1, 2024, while noting Walz’s salary remained $127,629 after he declined the increase. The library’s schedule, current as of October 2026, lists a $200,000 rate effective July 1, 2026, with the same note that Walz would not increase his own salary and would remain at $127,629. A salary rate is annual compensation, not wealth accumulated or net worth.

Are claims that Walz is worth hundreds of millions of dollars credible?

No. AFP found claims that Walz was worth hundreds of millions of dollars to be false, citing public tax statements and asset declarations. The evidence supports lower, attributed estimates and specific disclosed items—not a complete official household valuation. The same limits apply in the other direction: incomplete disclosures cannot establish an exact net worth.
