There is no dependable single price: RR Auction recorded $25,903 for an Atari Cosmos prototype in March 2024, $19,460 for a separate prototype in August 2024, and $1,503 for an Asteroids hologram artifact in August 2026. Each amount includes the buyer’s premium, and the sales involved different objects—not interchangeable examples of a complete retail console.
What the recent auction results show
The best available benchmarks are a small set of individual auction sales. They indicate what particular, unusual Atari Cosmos objects sold for, not a market-wide average or a guaranteed value for another item.
| Object and sale | Recorded result | What the result describes |
|---|---|---|
| Atari Cosmos prototype, RR Auction, March 2024 | $25,903, including buyer’s premium | A circa-1980 mock-up from Allan Alcorn’s collection. RR Auction states that it was nonfunctional because its logic board was absent; the lot included a signed provenance letter. RR Auction lot record |
| Atari Cosmos prototype, RR Auction, August 2024 | $19,460, including buyer’s premium | A separate prototype described as being from Alcorn’s collection. Its condition and included components should be assessed from its own lot record, not inferred from the March sale. RR Auction lot record |
| Asteroids hologram artifact, RR Auction, August 2026 | $1,503, including buyer’s premium | An original circa-1981 Asteroids hologram component cataloged with period advertising and an “Inside Story” specification sheet—not a complete game system. RR Auction sale information |
The figures are historical completed-sale prices. They do not establish what a similar item would fetch now, particularly when only a few singular objects provide comparison points.
Why “an Atari Cosmos” can mean very different things
Atari promoted the Cosmos, also called The Third Dimension, as a tabletop game system using Holoptics holographic imagery. It was announced but did not become an ordinary commercial release, leaving collectors to value prototypes and individual artifacts rather than a standard retail console with a broad resale market. A 1981 Play Meter report describes Atari’s plan to introduce the system in selected test markets; that contemporary announcement documents the plan, not proof that retail units were released. 1981 Play Meter report

RR Auction describes a design involving holographic cartridges and an LED array, with nine planned games: Asteroids, Basketball, Dodge ’Em, Football, Outlaw, Road Runner, Sea Battle, Space Invaders, and Superman. The auction house says Atari canceled the project after its announcement and before release. RR Auction description
That distinction matters when interpreting a price. A prototype body, a hologram plate, and a more complete or documented assembly are different collectibles. Even two prototypes with the same provenance may differ in condition, completeness, and what accompanies them.

How to estimate a Cosmos item you own
- Identify the object precisely. Record whether it is a prototype, a standalone hologram, or another component. Note the game or image represented and any labels, packaging, advertising, or documentation.
- Document condition and completeness. Photograph all sides and any visible damage or missing parts. For a prototype, distinguish an intact-looking exterior from a functional system; the $25,903 March 2024 example lacked its logic board and was explicitly nonfunctional.
- Establish provenance. Keep letters, prior-sale paperwork, and other documentation with the object. The two higher cited prototype results were associated with Allan Alcorn’s collection, making their provenance an important part of the comparison—not evidence that every Cosmos item should command similar money.
- Compare like with like. Use completed sales of the same kind of artifact and inspect the actual lot descriptions. Do not average prototype prices with a hologram-component sale.
- Check the sale-cost basis. The auction results above include buyer’s premium. When comparing another result or estimating net proceeds, check whether its published figure includes the premium and account separately for any seller costs or terms disclosed by the auctioneer.
- Get a specialist opinion for a transaction decision. With so few dissimilar sales, an expert familiar with vintage video-game prototypes and documented provenance can assess an actual item more responsibly than a broad online price estimate.
How much is an Atari Cosmos hologram worth?
The most directly relevant recent benchmark is $1,503 including buyer’s premium for the Asteroids hologram artifact sold by RR Auction in August 2026. That lot included period advertising and a specification sheet, so the result should not be treated as a quote for a bare hologram, another game image, or a full prototype. What the price does—and does not—tell you
The $25,903 and $19,460 results show that provenance-rich prototype objects have sold for substantially more than the cited standalone Asteroids hologram artifact. They do not set a floor or ceiling for another object: the records concern distinct lots, and the higher-priced prototype was both nonfunctional and missing its logic board. Auction outcomes reflect the specific item, its documentation, the bidders present, and the sale terms.
For financial planning, treat a Cosmos valuation as an uncertain collectible estimate, not cash on hand. A completed auction proves a buyer paid the recorded amount for that lot at that time; it does not guarantee a quick resale, the same price in a future auction, or proceeds equal to the headline result.
