A PC has no fixed book value. Its realistic resale value is the range supported by recent sales of the same—or genuinely comparable—configuration, adjusted for condition, accessories, faults, and selling costs.

Your PC is worth what closely comparable PCs have recently sold for—not its original retail price or the highest unsold asking price you can find. Start with a realistic private-market gross-price range, then subtract the costs of the route you choose. Without the exact configuration, condition, location, and recent sold comparisons, nobody can responsibly name one precise value.

Expected net proceeds = realistic gross selling price − marketplace/payment fees − shipping − packaging − optional promotion or repair costs

This guide uses the United States and eBay.com as its main reference point. Prices, fees, shipping, tax treatment, consumer protections, and trade-in quotes differ by country and local market.

Systems Performance (Addison-Wesley Professional Computing Series)
  • Hardware, kernel, and application internals, and how they perform
  • Methodologies for rapid performance analysis of complex systems

  • Performance challenges associated with cloud computing hypervisors

1. Build a spec sheet before you search prices

“i7 computer” or “gaming PC” is not enough to value a machine. An older Core i7 can be worth far less than a newer one, and a gaming desktop’s exact graphics card can change the result dramatically.

Record the following in a note you can reuse in searches and your listing:

  • Brand, exact model, and model number
  • Whether it is a laptop, manufacturer prebuilt desktop, custom desktop, or Mac
  • Exact CPU
  • Installed RAM capacity
  • Every drive: capacity and type (SSD, NVMe SSD, or hard drive)
  • Exact GPU and VRAM, where relevant
  • For laptops: screen size/resolution, battery health or runtime, charger, keyboard, webcam, ports, and hinge condition
  • For custom desktops: exact GPU, case, motherboard, power supply, cooling, Wi-Fi antennas, and any upgrade parts
  • Operating system, activation status, and whether Windows 11 compatibility is known
  • Cosmetic and functional condition: scratches, dents, missing panels or feet, dead pixels, fan noise, heat issues, port failures, battery problems, repairs, liquid damage, and intermittent faults
  • Everything included: original charger or power cable, box, manuals, recovery media, peripherals, monitor, and spare drives

Where to find Windows specifications

Open Settings > System > About for the processor, installed RAM, system type, Windows edition, and version. Check Settings > System > Storage for storage information. For a deeper inventory, press Windows key + R, enter msinfo32, and open System Information; it lists hardware, components, drivers, services, and software environment details.

Do not stop at the About screen when pricing a gaming PC. Verify the exact discrete GPU and every installed drive separately. Two computers described as “i7, 16GB RAM” may be entirely different generations and values.

2. Price from sold comparables, not live listings

On eBay, search the exact model number first. For a custom or gaming PC, search the closest combination of CPU, GPU, RAM, and storage. Then filter for recent Sold or Completed listings and open the individual results. Marketplace research and completed-listing history are useful for identifying approximate current selling prices; a live listing only shows what a seller hopes to receive.

Gather five to ten recent sales that genuinely resemble yours. Use a range, not a single cherry-picked result.

Keep in the comparison set Exclude or adjust
Same exact model, or materially similar CPU, GPU, RAM, and storage “For parts/not working,” locked, damaged, untested, or incomplete devices
Same form factor and, for laptops, similar screen size Bundles with monitors, premium peripherals, warranties, or multiple extra drives
Similar cosmetic condition and battery condition Different countries/currencies or substantially different shipping terms
Recent completed sales with clear specifications Vague listings, wrong generation, or mismatched configurations

Turn the sales into a usable range

  1. Write down each comparable’s sold price, configuration, condition, included items, and whether shipping was charged separately.
  2. Remove obvious outliers and state why: for example, a broken unit, a bundle with a monitor, or a listing with a different GPU.
  3. Identify the low, typical, and high sold results.
  4. Use the typical result as the anchor. A clean, fully tested, complete, well-photographed machine may justify the typical-to-high end only when its condition and included items truly match.
  5. If your selling channel allows negotiation, list modestly above your target—but decide your minimum acceptable net before you publish.

This is an appraisal method, not a marketplace guarantee. Timing, supply, buyer protections, shipping cost, geography, and the mix of buyers all affect the price actually achieved.

3. Match the price to the selling route

Keep these figures separate. A trade-in quote is not proof of private-sale value, and a marketplace headline price is not necessarily the money you keep.

Route What it can offer What to account for
Private local sale Potentially no shipping and fewer selling costs Smaller buyer pool; arrange safe meeting and payment practices
Online marketplace Larger buyer pool and abundant sold-comparable data Fees, packaging, shipping, returns or dispute exposure, and time
Trade-in Convenience and a quoted offer Usually trades maximum potential proceeds for simplicity; treat it as a separate offer

For eBay.com, final-value fees vary by category and selling setup. Its published general range is 2.5%–15.3% by category, plus a per-order fee. Check the current fee page and calculator immediately before listing; do not assume a universal percentage. Casual sellers may also have a monthly free-listing threshold, subject to current terms.

A simple net-proceeds example

If comparable sales support a $500 gross price, your net is not automatically $500. Subtract the applicable marketplace/payment fees, the shipping label, a box and protective packing, and any optional promoted-listing cost. If local cash sale is practical and safe, shipping may be zero—but convenience and buyer reach are different. Compare routes using net proceeds, effort, and risk rather than one advertised number.

4. Prepare the PC without exaggerating the payoff

Clean the exterior, screen, ports, and visible dust; remove fingerprints, stickers, and grime. An electric air duster can be useful for removing dust from a computer or keyboard before inspection and photos. It is a presentation tool, not a repair, benchmark, or valuation device, and there is no reliable basis for promising that it adds a fixed dollar amount to resale value.

Take clear photos of:

  • The exterior from several angles and all sides of a laptop
  • The powered-on desktop or login/Setup screen, without exposing private information
  • Ports, keyboard, screen, charger, accessories, and any included antennas
  • Model or serial information only to the extent it is safe to disclose publicly
  • Every notable flaw, close enough for a buyer to understand it

Describe defects plainly. Do not label an untested computer “working,” hide a battery or thermal problem, or promise game performance you have not measured. Price a bundle only against sold bundles with comparable contents.

5. Protect your data and make the handoff usable

Windows PCs

  1. Back up files you want to keep before resetting. The FTC advises backing up and erasing the drive before disposing of a computer.
  2. Use Reset this PC > Remove everything. For a sale, donation, or recycling handoff, enable Clean data; Microsoft says this makes removed files harder to recover.
  3. Do not represent that consumer reset as a government- or industry-standard erasure method. Microsoft explicitly says its clean-data function does not meet those standards. If the machine held regulated, highly sensitive, or business data, use an appropriate stronger process.
  4. Verify that your Microsoft account, browser profiles, cloud-storage access, passwords, recovery keys, and personally licensed applications are no longer accessible.

Macs

Back up the Mac, sign out of relevant services, erase it, reinstall macOS, and stop at Setup Assistant so the buyer can complete their own setup. On qualifying Apple-silicon and T2 Macs running macOS Monterey or later, Erase All Content and Settings can simplify the process.

Turn off Find My. Doing so removes Activation Lock; a Mac still linked to the seller’s account can be unusable to the buyer. This is an essential handoff requirement, not cosmetic cleanup.

6. Disclose software and support status accurately

State the installed operating system clearly. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025: Microsoft says it no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. That does not make every Windows 10 PC unsellable, but it is material information that can affect demand and should be disclosed.

Do not market a preinstalled Windows license as a separate transferable bonus. Microsoft’s OEM/preinstalled Windows terms allow transfer only with the licensed device; the software cannot be moved to another machine. Likewise, do not say “comes with Office” unless you can legally transfer the entitlement and explain it accurately. Never publish product keys, account credentials, recovery keys, or a full serial number in listing photos.

Common mistakes that distort PC values

  • Anchoring on original MSRP: age, performance, support status, and current supply matter more than what it cost new.
  • Using ambitious asking prices: prioritize recent sold results.
  • Comparing only the CPU name: exact generation, GPU, RAM, storage, and form factor matter.
  • Ignoring condition and included items: battery health, charger, screen condition, and missing parts can move the range.
  • Ignoring costs: calculate gross price and net proceeds separately.
  • Concealing faults or account locks: this risks returns, disputes, and an unusable device for the buyer.
  • Assuming the Windows key follows you: OEM Windows remains with the licensed PC.

Before you list

  • Have an exact spec-and-condition sheet.
  • Collect five recent, truly comparable sold listings.
  • Set a realistic gross-price range and a minimum acceptable net.
  • Choose local sale, marketplace sale, or trade-in deliberately.
  • Back up, erase, and remove accounts safely.
  • Photograph the PC and its actual flaws and accessories.
  • Recheck the platform’s current fees and shipping cost before publishing.

Gather your specifications and five recent sold comparables, then calculate your net before you list. That produces a defensible resale range—and prevents a good-looking asking price from becoming a disappointing sale.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out what my PC is worth?

Use recent sold or completed listings, not active asking prices. Compare the exact model where possible; for custom PCs, match CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, form factor, condition, and included items. Build a set of five to ten comparable sales and use a realistic range.

Is a trade-in quote the same as resale value?

Not necessarily. A trade-in quote reflects a convenience offer, while a private sale or online marketplace may have a different gross price and different costs. Compare the expected net proceeds, time, effort, shipping, and risk for each route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is resetting a Windows PC enough before selling it?

No. Back up your data, use Reset this PC with Remove everything and Clean data for an ordinary consumer handoff, and remove accounts and credentials. Microsoft does not describe that consumer function as meeting government or industry data-erasure standards, so sensitive or regulated data may require a stronger process.

Can I still sell a Windows 10 PC?

It can matter to buyers because Windows 10 stopped receiving free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes on October 14, 2025. The PC may still function and may still sell, but disclose the operating system and support status accurately.

Can I keep the Windows license and sell the PC?

Generally, no. Preinstalled OEM Windows is licensed to transfer with the device, not separately to another PC. Do not advertise the key as a transferable extra.

The Bottom Line

A PC’s resale value is a current, evidence-based range: compare the exact configuration and condition with recent sold listings, then calculate what remains after the costs of your chosen selling route.
