A California one-day sport fishing license costs $21.09 in 2026, whether you are a resident or a nonresident. It covers fishing for one specified day. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) fee schedule lists the fee and license term.

2026 California fishing license costs

These are the 2026 fees listed by CDFW. The one-day license has the same price for residents and nonresidents; the other options differ by term and eligibility. CDFW’s fee schedule notes that most fees include a 5% license-agent handling fee and a 3% nonrefundable application fee, so do not assume every checkout total will be identical across purchase channels.

License 2026 fee Term and eligibility
One-day sport fishing license $21.09 One specified day; resident or nonresident
Two-day sport fishing license $32.40 Two consecutive days; resident or nonresident
Ten-day sport fishing license $64.54 Ten consecutive days; nonresidents
365-day sport fishing license $64.54 Residents age 16 or older; valid 365 days from purchase
365-day sport fishing license $174.14 Nonresidents age 16 or older; valid 365 days from purchase

Which license makes sense for your trip?

For one fishing day, the one-day license is the relevant option. For a trip covering consecutive days, compare its cost with the two-day license; a nonresident staying longer can also compare the ten-day license. Residents planning to fish throughout the year may compare the one-day or two-day cost with the 365-day license. The right choice depends on how many days you will fish and whether you qualify as a resident.

CDFW generally defines a resident as someone who has lived continuously in California for at least six months immediately before applying, with specified exceptions for military duty and Job Corps. The distinction does not change the one-day fee, but it can affect eligibility for longer-term licenses. See CDFW’s license information for the definition and exceptions.

Who needs a California sport fishing license?

CDFW says a sport fishing license is required for anyone attempting to take fish, mollusks, crustaceans, invertebrates, amphibians or reptiles in California inland or ocean waters. The state’s service page says people age 16 or older must possess a valid sport fishing license when taking covered animals. Check the current rules for your activity and location at California’s fishing license service page and CDFW before you go.

Where to buy a one-day license

CDFW lists online sales, license agents and CDFW license sales offices as purchase options. Its online license sales FAQ specifically confirms that the one-day license is available online. Use an official CDFW channel or license agent to obtain the state authorization.

What the one-day license does—and does not—cover

Ocean Enhancement Validation

A one-day sport fishing license is exempt from the Ocean Enhancement Validation requirement, including in ocean waters where that validation would otherwise apply. CDFW lists this exception on its fee schedule.

Species and area rules

The license does not replace fishing regulations or necessarily satisfy every additional requirement. CDFW says some species and areas require extra validations or report cards. Check the current regulations for the particular species, water and date you plan to fish.

Why license fees can change

CDFW says license fees are established in law and adjusted in response to cost changes using the Implicit Price Deflator. The department describes annual cost increases as generally about 2% to 3%, while noting that individual years can differ substantially; it identifies an 8.48% adjustment applied to 2023 license fees. These are CDFW’s published explanations, not a forecast of any future fee change. Check the current schedule before purchasing.

California’s 2026 free fishing days

CDFW listed July 4 and September 5 as California’s 2026 Free Fishing Days. Those dates have passed. On a designated free fishing day, a sport fishing license is not required, but fishing regulations remain in effect and listed report-card obligations still apply. Check CDFW’s Free Fishing Days page for dates applicable to the year you plan to fish.
