How much is a Mazda RX-7 worth today? It depends first on the generation, trim, condition and valuation method. As of October 8, 2026, a useful snapshot ranges from Hagerty’s $12,667 condition guide for a 1987 FC in #3 Good condition to CLASSIC.COM’s $40,758 benchmark for a US/Canada FD base model and $56,050 for FD R1/R2 variants. These are not directly comparable estimates: one is condition-rated, while the others are market benchmarks for specific configurations.

RX-7 values at a glance

Example Reported value What the figure means
1987 RX-7, FC generation $12,667 Hagerty’s July 2026 guide value for #3 Good condition; its low figure is $7,767. Hagerty’s 1987 RX-7 valuation page.
1986–1992 RX-7s, FC generation $18,900 average sale price Hagerty’s July 2026 page reports this across 32 sales in the prior 12 months, totaling $605,400. It is a generation-wide sales statistic, not a quote for a particular car. Hagerty’s 1987 RX-7 valuation page.
FD base model, US/Canada variant $40,758 CLASSIC.COM Market Benchmark, accessed October 8, 2026. The page identifies the US/Canada base variant as available for 1993–1995. CLASSIC.COM FD market page.
FD R1/R2 $56,050 CLASSIC.COM Market Benchmark, accessed October 8, 2026, for the 1993–1995 driver-focused variants. CLASSIC.COM FD R1/R2 page.
1991 RX-7 convertible $11,567 Hagerty’s October 2026 estimate for #3 Good condition; the page’s low figure is $6,533. This is for the convertible configuration, not all 1991 RX-7s. Hagerty’s 1991 convertible valuation page.

CLASSIC.COM’s overall RX-7 page reported a $27,648 average recorded sale price when accessed October 8, 2026. Because this is a moving database statistic and covers multiple generations and variants, it is context—not an estimate for any one car. Its $148,000 top recorded sale occurred on June 9, 2023, making it a historical record rather than a typical-value guide. CLASSIC.COM’s RX-7 market page.

Start by identifying the generation

CLASSIC.COM groups the RX-7 into three generations: SA22/first generation (1979–1985), FC (1986–1992) and FD (1992–2002). Year labels can overlap at a transition depending on the reference, so use the specific model year and market when comparing listings. The RX-7 is a two-seat sports car powered by a Mazda rotary (Wankel) engine. CLASSIC.COM’s RX-7 market page.

The available benchmarks do not establish a reliable first-generation value. For an SA22/first-generation car, do not use an FC guide or FD benchmark as a substitute; seek recent completed sales for the same market, year, body and condition.

FD prices vary by trim

CLASSIC.COM’s FD page, accessed October 8, 2026, lists distinct Market Benchmarks for several variants. These are database benchmarks, not guaranteed sale prices.

FD variant CLASSIC.COM Market Benchmark
Base model (US/Canada) $40,758
Touring $43,697
R1/R2 $56,050
Type RZ $54,124
Spirit R $58,755

These figures describe different variants; they should not be read as a simple ladder for every FD, especially across markets. The cited base-model listing describes a 1.3-liter 13B twin-turbo engine and says the US/Canada base variant was available for 1993–1995. CLASSIC.COM FD market page.

Check that an R1/R2 is factory-authentic

CLASSIC.COM describes the FD R1/R2 as 1993–1995 driver-focused variants. Its page reports a $56,050 benchmark and a $59,295 average recorded sale price, alongside a high sale of $148,000 on June 9, 2023 and a low of $27,777 on July 28, 2024. Those sale results show a wide spread, not a promise that an R1/R2 will sell near the average. The page also notes model-year equipment distinctions and warns that base or Touring cars may be modified to resemble R1/R2 examples. Verify factory identity and documentation rather than valuing appearance alone. CLASSIC.COM FD R1/R2 page.

What condition and sales data say about FC values

Hagerty’s July 2026 page gives a 1987 RX-7 a #3 Good condition guide value of $12,667, with a low figure of $7,767. That condition rating is central to the estimate: it is not a universal price for every 1987 car. The same page reports 32 sales for 1986–1992 RX-7s in the prior 12 months, an $18,900 average sale price and $605,400 in total sales volume. Hagerty’s 1987 RX-7 valuation page.

Individual sales on the page illustrate why mileage, model and venue matter. A 1987 coupe with 153,700 miles sold for $12,600 on December 29, 2025; a 1988 Turbo coupe with 18,000 miles sold for $39,638 on September 12, 2026. These are completed-sale examples, not interchangeable appraisals: they differ in year, trim and mileage. Hagerty’s 1987 RX-7 valuation page.

Body style also changes the comparison. Hagerty’s October 2026 estimate for a 1991 convertible is $11,567 in #3 Good condition, with a low figure of $6,533; a displayed 1991 convertible sale was $20,999 on March 29, 2026. The sale is a useful comparable only to the extent that another car matches its configuration and condition. Hagerty’s 1991 convertible valuation page.

How to estimate a specific RX-7

  1. Record the exact car. Note model year, generation, market, trim, body style and whether it is a base, Turbo, convertible or special variant.
  2. Establish condition. Compare cars in similar condition, and distinguish a condition-rated guide from a market benchmark or a completed sale.
  3. Match mileage and specification. Give more weight to comparable cars with similar mileage, body style and equipment than to an all-generation average.
  4. Verify originality. For claimed special trims such as R1/R2, check factory identity and supporting documentation; modifications that imitate trim equipment do not establish the original variant.
  5. Use dated, local comparables. Compare recent completed sales in the relevant market, and note whether a source shows a guide value, benchmark, asking price or actual sale. Dynamic database figures can change.

Why published RX-7 numbers differ

  • They measure different things. Hagerty’s #3 Good figure is a condition-based guide estimate; CLASSIC.COM’s Market Benchmark is a market reference; a completed sale records what one car brought at a particular time.
  • They cover different cars. A 1987 FC, a 1991 convertible and a US/Canada FD base model are not direct comparables.
  • They reflect different time windows. A dated auction result is historical, while database benchmarks and averages can move as new sales are recorded.
  • Exceptional sales distort broad context. The $148,000 record sale is not representative of an ordinary RX-7.
