Short-term options are also available, but their durations differ by residency and license type. The prices below come from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources’ resident fee schedule and nonresident fee schedule.
South Carolina fishing license prices
The current SCDNR schedules list these recreational license prices. Annual and three-year licenses are valid for the stated period from purchase; short-term licenses are valid for consecutive days.

Prices are from SCDNR’s resident schedule and nonresident schedule. The schedules do not offer every duration to both groups.
Which price applies to you?
Residency
SCDNR defines a resident by domicile in South Carolina. Its guidance describes state-issued identification as proof for license vendors; a person with an out-of-state driver’s license is treated as a nonresident for license purchase. Simply visiting or staying in South Carolina does not make you a resident. See SCDNR’s license FAQ for residency details.

Freshwater or saltwater
Freshwater and saltwater licenses have separate fees. Some coastal rivers and creeks have official dividing lines between the two classifications. If you are unsure which license covers a particular location, check SCDNR’s freshwater and saltwater boundary guidance.
Duration
Choose a term based on how often you expect to fish. The schedules include annual and three-year options for some license types, as well as short-term licenses. A listed term runs from purchase or for the stated consecutive days, rather than necessarily matching a calendar year.

Who may not need a license?
People under 16 generally do not need a fishing license. SCDNR lists exceptions for children engaged in commercial activity or using nongame fishing devices, including traps, trotlines, gill nets, hoop nets, set hooks and jugs. Check the agency’s license pricing overview if one of those exceptions may apply.
