- Damage history and originality: Accident or damage history, originality and specification affect how a car compares with other examples.
- Provenance and documentation: Ownership history and credible records may make a particular car unusually notable, as with the Iacocca-owned RM Sotheby’s example.
- Specification and market: U.S. specification and the geographic market are relevant when comparing cars or sale results.
- Sale context: A completed auction result is evidence of what one buyer paid for one car at one event; it is not interchangeable with a guide estimate or an asking price.
How to use these numbers when valuing an F40
- Start with a comparable guide tier. Match the model year and condition as closely as possible; the July 2026 1988 #3 Good figure is a reference point, not a universal valuation.
- Compare like with like. Check year, condition, mileage, specification, records and sale date before using another F40’s auction result as a comparable.
