There is no single price for a bluefin tuna: a U.S. commercial dockside payment, a retail steak price and a record-setting auction bid measure different things. The latest U.S. commercial benchmark cited by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is based on 2024 average ex-vessel prices, ranging from $5.77 to $7.46 per pound of dressed weight, as used in a 2026 federal quota rule. By contrast, a 243 kg (535 lb) fish sold for 510 million yen, reported as $3.2 million, at Tokyo’s first Toyosu auction of 2026. That was a record New Year auction result—not an ordinary price for bluefin tuna.
What does “worth” mean for a bluefin tuna?
The price depends on the sale stage. Ex-vessel value is what the first buyer pays at the dock; it is not the price a customer pays for a retail cut. Wholesale, retail and auction prices refer to separate transactions and should not be compared as if they were equivalent. NOAA’s economic reporting also labels its ex-vessel price chart in dollars per pound of dressed weight, so the weight basis matters as well as the year and market. NOAA’s 2025 economic report charts monthly average ex-vessel prices for 2021–2025; the plotted values vary, and no particular monthly figure is quoted here.
U.S. commercial dockside prices
In a 2026 rule, NMFS used 2024 average ex-vessel prices for four U.S. commercial categories. Each figure below is a category average per pound of dressed weight—not a retail price or a guaranteed price for a particular fish.

These values appear in NMFS’s 2026 quota rule. They offer a useful commercial benchmark, but they cannot establish what a consumer will pay for a steak, sushi serving or whole fish.

Why a bluefin sold for $3.2 million
At Toyosu’s first auction of 2026 in Tokyo, Kiyomura Corp. paid 510 million yen—reported as $3.2 million—for a 243 kg (535 lb) bluefin tuna, according to the Associated Press. It was a record New Year auction sale, not a standard per-pound market quote. The auction’s date, venue and celebratory context are essential to understanding the headline figure.
The buyer’s owner, Kiyoshi Kimura, had previously set the record with a 334 million yen ($2.1 million) purchase in 2019, AP reported. Neither auction total is a dependable guide to the regular value of bluefin or the amount a fisher receives at the dock.

Does the dockside price equal a fisher’s profit?
No. An ex-vessel price is a gross first-sale value, not net earnings after fishing expenses. NMFS says available data—particularly for non-Longline permit holders—do not show trip effort and costs such as fuel, bait and ice well enough to calculate net revenue for each permit holder. A category price per pound therefore cannot be used to infer what a fisher ultimately keeps.
What these figures do not tell you about retail price
The cited figures do not establish a current retail price for a particular cut in a specified location. A consumer price depends on the product form, quality or grade, market and sales channel; the available figures do not provide those retail inputs. It would be misleading to convert the U.S. dockside averages into a retail estimate or to treat the Tokyo auction total as the normal value of a tuna.

U.S. Atlantic bluefin quotas and trade rules
Price is only part of the commercial picture. NOAA says U.S. Atlantic bluefin fisheries are subject to permits, annual quotas and subquotas, gear restrictions, time-and-area closures and minimum size limits. Retention limits can vary; fishers should consult NOAA’s permit shop for current rules. NOAA’s bluefin tuna management page describes the management framework.
A final rule effective August 19, 2026, raised the baseline U.S. annual Atlantic bluefin quota from 1,316.14 metric tons whole weight to 1,509.98 metric tons for 2026–2028, consistent with the level adopted by ICCAT. This is a fishery-management quota, not a price and not a promise of retail availability. The final rule also estimated $13.2 million in annual gross revenue under baseline subquotas, using maximum potential subquotas and category prices; NMFS cautioned that some category estimates may understate or overstate realized revenue.
