Chime’s savings rates have changed since the March 2025 report about the company’s growth strategy. In that report, customers with qualifying direct deposit received 3.75% APY and standard users received 2%. Chime’s latest dated rate disclosure located here, effective January 29, 2026, lists different membership tiers; because rates are variable, check Chime’s current terms before opening or relying on an account.

What savings rates did Chime offer in March 2025?

On March 31, 2025, TechCrunch reported that Chime offered 3.75% APY to customers who set up qualifying direct deposit, compared with 2% APY for standard users. Those are historical rates, not a statement of what every Chime customer can earn now. TechCrunch’s March 31, 2025 report described the higher yield as part of Chime’s effort to attract customers and deepen relationships with existing ones.

At the time, TechCrunch compared the 3.75% offer with a 0.61% APY national savings-account yield, citing Bankrate’s survey of institutions for the week of March 24, 2025. That comparison is useful only as a snapshot of that week; it is not a current market average or a like-for-like comparison of account conditions.

What are the latest dated Chime rates located?

Chime’s help page lists these APYs effective January 29, 2026:

Membership tier APY listed Qualification
Chime Prime 3.75% Rate shown for Chime Prime
Chime Plus 3.00% Rate shown for Chime Plus
Standard members 0.75% Rate shown for standard membership

These rates and tiers come from Chime’s Savings Account APY disclosure. Chime states that APYs are variable and may change at any time. The page’s effective date does not establish what rate is available today, so verify the current disclosure and your eligibility before making a decision.

Did the higher rate drive Chime’s growth?

The March 2025 coverage framed the higher rate as a customer-acquisition and relationship-building strategy. Chime’s SEC registration statement reported 8.6 million Active Members as of March 31, 2025, and said 67% relied on Chime as their primary financial relationship. Those figures show the company’s scale and the importance of deeper customer relationships to its strategy; they do not show that the savings rate caused member growth or retention.

The available figures do not isolate the rate offer’s effect on account openings, balances, retention, revenue, or profitability. Treat the growth rationale as reported strategic intent, not a measured result.

What happened to Chime’s planned IPO?

The IPO is no longer pending. Chime announced pricing at $27 per share on June 11, 2025, and its annual filing says the offering closed on June 13, 2025, at that price. Chime reported $770.6 million in net proceeds after underwriting discounts and offering costs. The IPO’s completion is relevant context for the 2025 growth story, but it does not establish that the savings-rate strategy succeeded.

How to evaluate Chime’s savings rate

When comparing Chime with another savings account, focus on the terms that determine what you personally can earn, rather than a headline APY alone:

  • Eligibility: Check whether a higher tier requires qualifying direct deposit or other conditions, and which tier applies to you.
  • Rate variability: A variable APY can change, so confirm the current rate and the date it took effect.
  • Account terms: Compare fees and minimum-balance requirements using each provider’s official disclosures.
  • Bank and insurance details: Review the account’s bank partner and deposit-insurance terms rather than assuming they match another provider’s arrangement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need direct deposit to get Chime’s higher savings rate?

In the March 31, 2025 report, the 3.75% APY offer required qualifying direct deposit; standard users received 2%. Chime’s later dated disclosure uses Prime, Plus, and standard tiers, so check its current terms for the eligibility rules that apply now.

Is Chime’s 3.75% APY still available?

The 3.75% figure appears in both the historical March 2025 report for qualifying direct-deposit customers and Chime’s January 29, 2026 disclosure for Chime Prime. Those dates do not establish today’s rate; Chime says its APYs are variable.
