It is not a total for all of Donald Trump’s golf-related trips. The official records cited here do not establish a complete cumulative figure.
What does the $13.6 million figure cover?
GAO’s 2019 estimate covers four trips to Mar-a-Lago during the dates above. Its table totaled $13.568 million before rounding. The estimate spans costs at multiple federal agencies, rather than only the Secret Service. GAO’s report and summary describe the estimate and its scope.

The agency amounts are rounded shares of the same estimated total, not additional costs to add to it. GAO excluded certain classified cost information, as well as salaries and benefits for personnel who would have been paid regardless of the travel.
Did Mar-a-Lago receive money directly?
A 2019 Senate Judiciary Committee release summarizing GAO’s report says that $60,000 was paid directly to Mar-a-Lago. This is a detail reported by the committee, not a separate total listed in GAO’s headline cost table. The committee’s release also includes lawmakers’ political characterizations, which should not be confused with GAO’s accounting findings.

Why isn’t there a complete total for all of Trump’s golf trips?
The $13.6 million estimate is tied to four trips in a particular five-week period and a defined set of agency costs. It cannot be multiplied by a trip count to produce a reliable lifetime or term-wide total: trips may differ in duration, destination, security needs and expenses, and an itinerary does not record comparable expenditure totals.
GAO has also documented gaps in required cost reporting. It found that, for fiscal years 2015 through 2017, only the Coast Guard had submitted the required semiannual protection-cost reports; the Secret Service had not submitted them consistently. GAO said that, as of September 2024, the Department of Defense had not issued revised guidance or the required report described in the recommendations. Those reporting weaknesses are important context, but do not establish a specific unreported amount. GAO’s report describes the reporting issue.

The U.S. Government Publishing Office’s 2025 Presidential Daily Diary records repeated trips to Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach and stays at Mar-a-Lago. It documents itinerary and activity, not comparable taxpayer costs. The diary therefore cannot fill the gap in a cumulative cost ledger.
Why do other reported figures use a different scope?
A Secret Service-only audit is not an all-agency estimate. For example, the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General’s March 2020 audit examined Secret Service expenses at Trump Turnberry in Scotland. Its expense categories included rental cars, hotel rooms, meals and incidentals, overtime, commercial airfare, golf-cart rentals and logistical support. It excluded salaries and benefits and assistance supplied by the Department of Defense, including military aircraft.

The OIG said, “We did not identify any fraud indicators or unauthorized costs.” That finding applies to the audited Turnberry expenses; it is not a general finding about other trips or all spending. The March 2020 audit explains its scope and exclusions. Its figures should not be added to GAO’s Mar-a-Lago estimate without accounting for differences in time period, categories and possible overlap.

GAO’s roughly $13.6 million estimate is a substantial, official measure of the federal-agency costs of four early Mar-a-Lago trips. It is not an all-trip total. The records cited here do not establish a comparable cumulative cost for every golf-related trip, including trips in Trump’s current term. A 2026 GAO report discusses Secret Service protection policies and cost drivers such as lodging, transportation and services from nonfederal sources, but it is not a golf-trip cost audit and supplies no cumulative amount. The 2026 report should not be read as one.
