Re:

How Much Gold Is in a Computer Motherboard? The Real Amount and Value

A motherboard may contain roughly 20–250 mg of gold depending on its weight and grade. Learn where it is, why estimates vary, what it could theoretically be worth, and why professional recycling beats home refining.

Most computer motherboards contain real gold, but usually only milligrams to roughly a tenth of a gram. A 2026 review estimates 200–250 milligrams of gold per kilogram of motherboard material, while one tested 459-gram board contained 0.067 grams (67 milligrams). The amount depends on the board’s age, grade, connectors, attached components and the laboratory method used. That is contained gold—not the cash a household will necessarily receive after sorting, processing costs and recovery losses.

Define what you are weighing

A motherboard-only estimate excludes the CPU, RAM, expansion cards, drives, power supply, cables and case. Those parts can contain their own gold-bearing contacts and should not be silently included in a motherboard figure. Decide whether the CPU and socket hardware remain attached, record the board’s mass, and identify whether it is a consumer, server or telecom board.

The most defensible estimate by board weight

A 2026 review lists computer motherboards at approximately 200–250 parts per million (ppm) of gold. One ppm is one milligram per kilogram, so the practical calculation is:

Estimated gold (mg) = board mass (kg) × 200–250

Board material Estimated contained gold
100 g 20–25 mg
250 g 50–62.5 mg
500 g 100–125 mg
750 g 150–187.5 mg
1 kg 200–250 mg (0.20–0.25 g)

These are feedstock estimates from the review, not a guarantee of refinery output or a buyer’s offer. The source is the 2026 review available at the Royal Society of Chemistry.

One measured motherboard shows why there is no universal number

A published analysis tested a 459-gram motherboard and reported 0.067 grams of gold, equivalent to about 146 mg/kg. The same sample contained 0.35 g of silver, 0.089 g of palladium and 77.1 g of copper. See the reported sample at ICCK.

Applying the 200–250 ppm review range to that same 0.459 kg mass gives 91.8–114.75 mg—higher than the measured 67 mg. That difference is expected: studies examine different generations, designs, component mixes and samples. A study of waste-PCB categories found gold concentrations from 179.86 to 3,694.51 mg/kg, confirming that “electronic waste” is not one consistent grade (study details).

Where the gold is located

Gold is used mainly as a very thin, corrosion-resistant contact finish, not as a structural metal throughout the fiberglass board. It is distributed unevenly.

  • Connector contacts, including rear I/O and cable interfaces.
  • CPU socket contacts and, in some older hardware, processor-related sockets.
  • Edge contacts on attached cards and modules.
  • Selected integrated-circuit packages, leads and high-reliability interfaces.
  • Relay, switch and other contact surfaces on some designs.

RAM and PCIe “gold fingers” belong to those modules or cards. Count them separately unless your stated weight deliberately includes them. A yellow-colored contact does not prove solid gold, plating thickness, purity or economic value. Research finds precious metals concentrated in contacts, slots and interfaces rather than spread uniformly across the board (evidence).

Why two apparently similar boards can differ

  • Generation and date: plating practices and component choices change over time; “older means more gold” is only a possible tendency, not a rule.
  • Board grade: server and telecom boards may have denser connectors and higher-value components than low-cost consumer boards.
  • Attached parts: CPUs, RAM and expansion cards can materially change the metal mix.
  • Mass composition: extra weight may be fiberglass, resin, copper planes or heatsinks rather than gold.
  • Sampling: a laboratory may test a whole board, a composite sample or selected components.
  • Sorting and recovery: mixed low-grade loads and process losses reduce what a recycler can pay.

What the contained gold could be worth

Calculate theoretical value using:

gold mass (g) × current gold price per gram

Gold prices move continuously. The World Gold Council publishes the LBMA Gold Price at gold.org, and the LBMA provides benchmark information at lbma.org.uk. Convert a troy-ounce quote to a gram price by dividing by 31.1035 (the conversion reference is here).

The following is an illustration using an assumed $75 per gram, not a current quote:

Gold is only one part of motherboard value

The 2026 review gives typical motherboard ranges of 18–25% copper, 150–200 ppm silver and 6–8 ppm palladium, alongside 200–250 ppm gold (review). A shipment’s commercial value may therefore depend more on board grade, copper content, volume and sorting than on the gold in one board. Professional facilities can also recover aluminum, iron, tantalum-bearing materials and other fractions; the Royal Mint describes this broader output.

Why home extraction is usually a bad trade

Amateur refining can involve corrosive acids, oxidizers, toxic fumes, contaminated liquids, heat and difficult hazardous-waste disposal. Do not burn boards, use open-vessel acid treatments, mix household cleaners with acids, or pour spent solutions into drains. A review of PCB recycling describes multi-stage processing and variable selectivity (peer-reviewed review), while the European Commission discusses the energy and chemical challenges of precious-metal recovery (Commission report). Industrial approaches such as Mint Innovation’s biological process are not household kits (technology overview).

The practical route: reuse, sell sorted boards or recycle safely

  1. Check for reuse first. Refurbishment, donation or resale generally preserves more value than material recovery. Securely erase personal data before disposal.
  2. Separate obvious categories. Keep CPUs, RAM, expansion cards, server boards and ordinary motherboards apart when safe to do so. Do not dismantle batteries, CRT equipment or other hazardous parts casually.
  3. Document the lot. Photograph the boards, weigh them and note whether components remain installed.
  4. Request comparable quotes. Ask whether the buyer pays by category weight, assay or payable metal, and check minimum quantities, fees and shipping. A buyer’s sorting guidance illustrates why categories matter: ESG Edelmetall-Service.
  5. Use legitimate downstream recycling. In the United States, the EPA identifies R2 and e-Stewards as recognized electronics-recycling standards and provides recycling guidance at epa.gov. Local drop-offs and household-hazardous-waste rules vary; consult local-program guidance.

Commercial exporters should also check international rules: Basel Convention controls apply to many e-waste and scrap shipments from January 1, 2025 (EPA explanation).

Bottom line

A motherboard is genuine but modest precious-metal feedstock. A reasonable review-based estimate is 200–250 mg of gold per kilogram of board material, while tested boards can fall outside that range. Treat any dollar figure as theoretical until you account for board classification, volume, recovery efficiency, fees and the recycler’s payout terms. For one or a few boards, reuse or certified recycling is safer and usually more rational than chemical extraction; sorted, larger commercial loads are where professional recovery economics improve.
