There is no single electricity amount for charging every Tesla. The energy needed depends on the vehicle’s model and trim and on how much charge you add: a partial top-up is not the same as a full refill. To estimate a specific session, identify the Tesla and the starting and ending charge levels, then express the energy delivered in kilowatt-hours (kWh). Tesla’s official pages do not publish one universal full-charge kWh figure for its lineup.
What determines how many kWh a Tesla charge uses?
The question “How many kWh does a Tesla use to charge?” needs two details: the vehicle configuration and the charge interval. A charge from a low battery level to a higher one requires a different amount of energy than a smaller top-up, and model and trim also matter.
For a vehicle-specific estimate, look for current usable-energy information for that exact configuration or use the kWh recorded by the vehicle or Tesla app. Tesla’s onboard-charger guidance explains that the onboard charger converts AC power into DC energy stored in the battery, and that onboard-charger capability varies among vehicles. Tesla’s published support pages do not provide a complete, comparable battery-capacity table from which to calculate a universal full-charge figure.
Do not confuse charging power with energy used
Kilowatts (kW) measure the rate at which a charger can deliver power. Kilowatt-hours (kWh) measure the quantity of energy delivered over a charging session. A charger’s kW rating, therefore, does not tell you how many kWh a particular Tesla needs for a full or partial charge.

- COMPATIBILITY: Wall Connector is compatible with all Tesla models: Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y.
- CHARGING SPEED: Up to 44 miles of range per hour of charge, with up to 11.5 kW / 48 amp output, depending on Tesla model and breaker size.
- CONVENIENCE: Indoor or outdoor installation with variable amperage that allows max output to be customized to an existing power supply and supports any output up to 48A. Possible max output configurations include: 48A, 40A, 32A, 24A, 16A, 12A.
- CONNECTIVITY: Connecting the Wall Connector to a local Wi-Fi network enables over-the-air firmware updates for continual product improvements and remote access control.
- POWER-SHARE: Power-share is ideal for locations that need to charge more than one Tesla at the same time. This functionality allows up to six Wall Connectors to be linked for efficient power management.
For North American Wall Connector configurations, Tesla lists example outputs from 2.8 kW up to 11.5 kW, with the maximum shown for a 60-amp circuit. The corresponding range added per hour is approximate, and some Model 3 and Model Y configurations are limited to 7.7 kW. These are charging-speed specifications, not battery-capacity figures; actual charging capability depends on the circuit and the vehicle. See Tesla’s Wall Connector information for its examples.
How to estimate what a charge costs
Once you know the energy charged from the supply, the basic cost calculation is:

Charging cost = energy charged in kWh × applicable price per kWh
For home charging, use the rate on your electricity bill and the applicable time-of-use period, if your utility has one. Tesla’s Charging Calculator uses $0.14 per kWh as an assumed national residential electricity average for its comparison. That is Tesla’s calculator assumption, not a guaranteed current rate or a substitute for your own tariff.

At a Supercharger, the price depends on location. Tesla says billing may be per kWh or per minute, depending on the site, so check the price and billing basis shown for the charging location rather than applying a household rate. See Tesla’s Supercharging guidance.
Why charging speed and session conditions vary
A home Wall Connector is intended for routine charging, while Tesla describes Superchargers as suited to long-distance travel. Neither charging route changes the need to distinguish energy from speed, but it can affect how quickly energy is added and what it costs.

- Wireless Charging Door Control-The portable mobile car charger for tesla has a button on the connector that wirelessly opens the charging port door, eliminating the need for physical keys or buttons and making charging more convenient
- Intelligent Charging-The Seguma level 1 charger offers protection against leaks, grounding, voltage issues, overcharging, and overheating. It automatically shuts off when your Tesla is fully charged. Tip: Install a home circuit breaker for extra safety
- Extended 25FT Cable-The 25-foot cable allows easy tesla charging at home or public stations. The included portable storage bag lets you take the tesla home charger anywhere, making it ideal for travel, road trips, or visits. Perfect accessory for Model Y
Tesla says Supercharging speed varies with the battery’s charge level and temperature, station use, and vehicle configuration. Charging is faster at a lower state of charge and slows as the battery fills. That makes a charger’s peak power an unreliable way to predict the duration of an entire session.
