In the U.S., the standard 256GB iPhone 17 starts at $799 before tax. The iPhone Air starts at $999, the iPhone 17 Pro at $1,099 and the iPhone 17 Pro Max at $1,199. The four models launched in September 2025 and are available now; the amount you pay depends on storage, tax, trade-in and any financing or carrier promotion.
Prices below are U.S. prices listed by Apple as of August 18, 2026. They are device prices, not the full cost of wireless service or optional coverage.

How much will you actually pay?
The listed price is the phone’s starting device price, not a checkout total. Budget separately for sales tax, optional AppleCare+, accessories and cellular service. State and local tax rates vary, and a carrier may also charge activation or upgrade fees. The final amount depends on your location and checkout choices.

- Tax: Added according to the applicable state and local rules.
- Coverage and accessories: AppleCare+ and accessories are optional extras, not included in the prices above.
- Wireless service: A device installment does not include your monthly carrier plan.
- Financing: Apple describes eligible iPhone Upgrade Program purchases as 0% APR over 24 months, with an option to upgrade annually under program terms. Other financing may have different terms or interest. Check Apple’s program and purchase terms.
Dividing the base prices by 24 makes the model gaps easier to compare: the Pro Max is $400 more than the standard iPhone 17, or about $16.66 more per month before tax. That arithmetic does not account for financing eligibility, a trade-in or plan charges.
Trade-in credit: a possible reduction, not a guaranteed price
Apple’s iPhone 17 shopping page displayed an estimated $35–$695 in trade-in credit as of August 18, 2026. The offer depends on the old device’s model, configuration, condition and eligibility. The amount is not guaranteed until you provide the device details and Apple completes any required inspection. Check the estimate on Apple Trade In and the iPhone 17 purchase page.

This current displayed range differs from Apple’s launch estimate of $200–$700 for an iPhone 13 or newer. That launch estimate is historical, not a promise of today’s credit. Apple’s launch announcement gives the earlier range.

Apple described selected carrier offers of up to $1,100 in credits toward an iPhone 17 Pro for eligible iPhone 13-or-newer trade-ins. This is a maximum promotional credit, not a guaranteed instant reduction at checkout. The exact offer depends on the carrier and its terms; see Apple’s carrier-offers page and Apple’s Pro launch announcement.

Carrier offers commonly require a qualifying plan, eligible trade-in, carrier financing and monthly bill credits over a set period. If you leave early or fail to meet the terms, you may not receive all advertised credits. A “free iPhone” promotion generally means eligible device installments are offset by recurring credits; it does not make the wireless plan free. Compare the total plan cost and the length of the commitment, not just the phone payment.
Which iPhone 17 model makes sense for your budget?
- Choose iPhone 17 if you want the lowest starting price and do not need the Pro models’ camera hardware or pro-video features. At 256GB, it is also a larger starting storage capacity than the previous generation’s 128GB entry point.
- Consider iPhone Air if its thin, design-focused form is worth paying $200 more than the standard model to you. Its higher price does not mean it is the better choice for every feature or use.
- Consider iPhone 17 Pro if advanced photography or video capabilities justify spending $300 more than the standard model’s base price.
- Choose iPhone 17 Pro Max if you want the largest model and are willing to pay $400 more than the standard iPhone 17 at base storage.
For many buyers focused on ordinary everyday use and price, the standard iPhone 17 is the strongest value by these criteria. Heavy video recording, large game downloads and extensive photo libraries can make a higher storage tier worth considering: storage is not upgradeable later. Compare the cost of buying capacity now with your expected cloud-storage costs. A 512GB standard iPhone 17, for example, costs $999—less than the Pro’s 256GB base configuration—so decide whether you need more storage or Pro-specific features before choosing by model name.
How the prices compare with the previous generation
The standard iPhone 17 launched at the same $799 U.S. starting price as the standard iPhone 16, while doubling the entry storage from 128GB to 256GB. The iPhone 17 Pro launched at $1,099, $100 above the prior Pro’s starting price, according to contemporary coverage. Apple’s announcement gives the new starting price; Macworld and Consumer Reports discuss the comparison. The whole lineup is not a like-for-like price match: the Pro price changed, and Air is a new category.
Check the live price before ordering
Apple’s U.S. store prices and trade-in estimates can change, especially around a new iPhone launch. Compare the same storage and carrier setup when checking offers, and select the unlocked or “connect to any carrier later” path when comparing unlocked prices. Start with Apple’s U.S. iPhone store, then review the applicable trade-in or carrier terms before counting a discount toward your budget.
