In the U.S., Spotify Premium costs $12.99 per month for Individual, $18.99 for Duo, $21.99 for Family, or $6.99 for Student. Those are the advertised monthly prices checked August 18, 2026, before any applicable state or local sales tax. The cheapest legitimate option depends on how many eligible people live at your address and whether you qualify for the Student plan.
How Much Does Spotify Premium Cost? Plans, Pricing, and Deals
Spotify Premium prices at a glance
Spotify lists four standard U.S. Premium plans on its public pricing page. Spotify announced these prices in its January 15, 2026 pricing update.

What each Spotify plan includes
Premium Individual: $12.99 per month
Individual gives one person one Premium account, including Spotify’s standard Premium listening benefits. The current U.S. page also displays 15 hours of audiobook listening per month from Spotify’s subscriber catalog for the plan manager or account holder.
It is the simplest choice for one listener, for someone who does not live with another eligible subscriber, or for anyone who wants to use a previously purchased Spotify gift card. Spotify says gift cards apply only to Premium Individual.
Premium Duo: $18.99 per month
Duo provides two separate Premium accounts. It is designed for two people who live at the same address, such as partners or roommates. One person becomes the plan manager and pays the entire bill; the other person joins as a member.
The plan manager receives the included audiobook listening time shown by Spotify. The second member does not automatically receive that same included allotment, according to Spotify’s Duo payment guidance. Each person still keeps a separate account, library, recommendations, and listening history.
Premium Family: $21.99 per month
Family covers up to six separate Premium accounts for eligible family members living at the same address. The plan manager pays the full monthly charge, whether or not every available seat is occupied.
Spotify’s U.S. page lists parental controls, managed accounts for younger listeners, and audiobook listening time for the plan manager. Family is usually the best household value when at least three eligible people will use it, but it is not a general-purpose way to share one subscription with friends in different homes.

Premium Student: $6.99 per month
Student is a discounted individual plan for eligible students at participating accredited higher-education institutions. Spotify says it includes Hulu’s ad-supported plan at no extra charge, subject to Spotify’s and Hulu’s terms.

Which Spotify plan is the best value?
The cheapest plan per person is not always the plan with the lowest advertised monthly price. Duo and Family only make financial sense when the users meet Spotify’s same-address requirement and actually use the available accounts.

For exactly two people, two Individual plans cost $25.98 per month, compared with $18.99 for Duo—a difference of $6.99 per month before tax. Six Individual plans would cost $77.94 per month, compared with $21.99 for Family, a difference of $55.95.
Family with only two users costs $11 per person, so Duo is cheaper for a two-person household. Family is poor value for one person, while Student is the lowest regular price for one person who can verify eligibility.

No. Spotify describes both plans as household plans. Duo members must provide the same address as the plan manager, and Family members must live at the same address. Spotify may require address verification.

That means unrelated friends living in separate homes should not treat Duo or Family as legitimate friend-sharing plans. If you move or can no longer meet the household requirement, review Spotify’s Premium plan rules before changing accounts.
How Spotify Student verification works
- Open Spotify’s Premium Student information and verification flow.
- Complete the SheerID verification form.
- Log in through your school portal or provide acceptable enrollment evidence.
- Wait for Spotify’s confirmation email.
- Return to Spotify and apply the discount to a new or existing account.
- Repeat verification every 12 months while eligible.
Your school must appear in Spotify’s verification flow. If it is not listed, Spotify currently says you cannot qualify through that process. You generally do not need to add a student email address to your Spotify account.
Student subscriptions cannot be paid through mobile billing or another company’s billing system. If your discount expires, check the renewal date and expected charge: the account may move to the standard Individual rate automatically.
Spotify Premium deals and free trials
Offers change frequently and may depend on whether you are a new or returning customer. Check the live U.S. signup page immediately before subscribing, and look at the price that appears after the introductory period.
The three-month Individual offer is expired
Spotify’s page displayed a three-month $0 introductory offer for new Premium Individual customers, but its stated end date was July 6, 2026. As of the August 18, 2026 price check, that date had passed. Do not assume the offer is still available; use only a replacement offer with a new end date shown in the live signup flow.
Student introductory offers
The U.S. page displayed one month at $0 followed by $6.99 per month for eligible new Student subscribers. Because introductory offers are volatile, confirm the offer and its end date at checkout. A trial or discounted first month normally transitions to paid billing unless you cancel or remain eligible for another promotion.

Gift cards are not a current buying strategy
Spotify says newly purchased gift cards are no longer available. Previously purchased cards may still be redeemed at spotify.com/account/redeem, but they can be used only for Premium Individual, not Student, Duo, Family, Basic, or trial offers. The card must match the account’s country or region.

Does Spotify offer an annual Premium plan?
Spotify’s official U.S. Premium page lists monthly prices, not a general annual subscription price. Spotify also says new gift cards are no longer sold. Treat retailer listings advertising an “annual Spotify plan” cautiously and verify them against Spotify’s current terms and your account before paying.
Taxes, billing, and unexpected charges
- Tax: Expect applicable state or local sales tax to be added where required. Verify the final checkout amount.
- Trial renewal: A $0 offer is temporary. Note the first paid price and renewal date before completing signup.
- Price increases: Spotify says it emails subscribers about a new price and provides a one-month grace period to cancel before the new price takes effect. Your own billing date matters more than a universal calendar date. See Spotify’s price-update guidance.
- Partner billing: Apple, Google Play, a mobile carrier, internet provider, or another partner may control the payment and cancellation process.
- Add-ons: Spotify offers optional audiobook-related add-ons for some Individual, Duo, and Family accounts. They are not included in the base price and can increase your bill. Student, Basic, trial, gift-card, and certain third-party-billed accounts may be ineligible. See Spotify’s add-on rules.
- Payment history: If a charge seems wrong, review your account’s payment history and receipt breakdown using Spotify’s charged-too-much support page.
How to change your Spotify plan
For a subscription billed directly by Spotify, start at the account page and follow:
Account page → Manage your subscription → Change plan → choose a plan
Family or Duo managers changing to a smaller plan may need to choose which members remain Premium. Removed members move to Spotify Free. A member who leaves does not necessarily cancel the manager’s plan.
Members may need to cancel before joining a different plan. Google Play subscribers generally need to change plans through the Spotify app. If a carrier or another partner bills you, you typically must cancel with that partner and wait for the current Premium period to end before changing plans. Spotify warns that switching plans can affect remaining Premium time, particularly when moving between billing arrangements or upgrading from a trial, so read the confirmation screen carefully.

How to cancel Spotify Premium
- Go to your Spotify account page.
- Select Manage your plan.
- Select Cancel subscription.
- Follow the confirmation prompts.
With a normal paid subscription, Premium usually remains active until the next billing date. A zero-priced trial works differently: Spotify says canceling during the trial switches the account to Free immediately, and the trial cannot be reactivated.
Cancellation does not delete your playlists or saved music. Your account switches to Spotify Free, and your saved content remains available under the free service’s rules.

Spotify Free versus Premium
Spotify Free is the ad-supported option and preserves account access, playlists, saved music, and podcasts. It is sensible if ads and reduced controls are acceptable and you do not need the full Premium experience.
Premium is worth considering if you regularly listen without ads, need Premium playback features or offline listening, or want a household plan. Exact free-tier playback controls and feature availability can vary by device, market, and content type, so Spotify Free should not be assumed to provide an identical experience.
Important U.S. pricing qualification
This article is U.S.-focused and the prices were checked August 18, 2026. Spotify pricing, taxes, features, introductory offers, and plan availability vary by country and can change. Do not use these dollar prices for Canada, the U.K., Australia, or another market. Select the correct country and currency on Spotify’s official site before subscribing.
Bottom line
Choose Individual for one person, Duo for two people who live together, and Family for three or more eligible household members. Choose Student if you can complete annual verification and are within the four-year eligibility limit. If Premium’s features are not worth $12.99 per month plus tax, Spotify Free lets you keep your account, playlists, and saved music while accepting ads and more limited controls.
