How Much Does Robotic Surgery Cost? A U.S. Guide to Your Actual Bill

The cost of robotic surgery depends on the operation, care setting, bundled services, insurer terms, and your remaining benefits. Here’s how to separate posted prices from the amount you may owe.

There is no single price for robotic surgery. The amount you pay depends on the specific operation, where and how it is performed, what services are included, your insurer’s negotiated rate, and your remaining cost-sharing. A hospital’s posted price, the amount an insurer allows, and your final out-of-pocket bill are different figures—not interchangeable estimates.

This guide focuses on the U.S. Medicare and hospital-pricing context. Without a procedure, location, facility, and insurance details, a reliable patient-specific price or surgery-wide average cannot be stated.

Three different prices can appear in a cost estimate

Amount What it means What it tells you
Hospital posted charge or cash price The hospital’s published standard charge or discounted cash price. CMS requires hospitals to publish standard charges, including negotiated rates and discounted cash prices, in machine-readable and consumer-friendly formats. A reference for comparison, but not necessarily the amount your insurer allows or what you will owe.
Allowed or negotiated amount The amount recognized for a particular service under a specific insurer’s contract and coverage rules. A plan-specific figure. Confirm what services and clinicians are included, and whether they are in network.
Your out-of-pocket responsibility Your share after coverage rules are applied, including any deductible, copayment, or coinsurance, subject to your benefits and applicable limits. The amount most relevant to your budget. It can change with your remaining deductible, network status, and coverage for the procedure.

CMS says its hospital price-transparency program is intended to help consumers compare prices and estimate costs before receiving care. To make a meaningful comparison, match the same operation, care setting, service bundle, and insurance terms rather than comparing a posted gross charge at one hospital with a negotiated rate or patient bill from another.

What determines the amount you may owe?

  • The operation and billing code: “Robotic surgery” describes a technique, not one procedure or billing price. Ask the surgeon’s office which procedure and expected billing code or codes are planned.
  • The facility and care setting: An inpatient hospital stay, hospital outpatient department, and ambulatory surgery center may have different charges and cost-sharing. Medicare.gov also identifies facility type and location as factors that can affect what a patient owes.
  • The services in the estimate: A facility estimate may not include every professional or related charge. Depending on the case, ask whether the estimate covers the surgeon, assistant surgeon, anesthesia, pathology, imaging, implants or supplies, and aftercare.
  • Your coverage and network: Coverage, the insurer’s allowed amount, network participation, deductible status, copayments, coinsurance, and remaining annual out-of-pocket limit all affect your share. A Medicare Advantage member should confirm costs with their plan; Original Medicare tools do not establish a Medicare Advantage plan’s terms.
  • Additional care or clinicians: The services ultimately needed may not be fully known in advance. Medicare.gov advises patients to ask about both the procedure and care afterward, and notes that other doctors or costs may apply.

A scoped Medicare example—not a general robotic-surgery price

Medicare.gov’s 2026 outpatient Procedure Price Lookup displays a national-average Medicare-approved amount of $11,965 for code 58573: a $10,860 facility fee and a $1,105 doctor fee. For that code in the hospital outpatient context, the page shows average patient responsibility of $1,957 and notes that the outpatient copayment cap likely applies.

Those are Medicare.gov’s displayed 2026 averages for that code and setting, not a quote for an individual, a private-insurance or self-pay price, or a demonstrated price for all robotic operations. The page cautions that costs vary by location, its estimate may not include every additional cost, and more than one doctor may be involved. The code example also does not establish that the procedure is robot-specific.

How to get an estimate you can use

  1. Ask the surgeon’s office for the planned procedure and codes. Request the expected inpatient or outpatient status and whether the planned site is a hospital outpatient department or an ambulatory surgery center.
  2. Request a written facility estimate. Ask what the facility fee includes and whether the estimate includes customary bundled services. Ask separately about professional fees and other likely components—such as anesthesia, pathology, imaging, implants or supplies, and aftercare—when applicable.
  3. Have your insurer check the plan details. Confirm coverage for the planned procedure and whether the facility, surgeon, anesthesiologist, and other expected clinicians are in network. Ask for the allowed amount, your deductible, copayment or coinsurance, and how much of your annual out-of-pocket limit remains.
  4. If paying cash, ask for the discounted cash price and its scope. Confirm whether it covers both facility and professional components or whether separate charges may follow. CMS says hospitals must make discounted cash prices publicly available.
  5. Compare estimates on equal terms. Match the operation and codes, setting, included services, insurer and network status, and aftercare. CMS points consumers to Care Compare for hospital quality information alongside price comparison; price alone does not answer whether a facility is appropriate for your care.
  6. Clarify any separate robotic line item. Ask the facility and insurer how it is coded and whether it is covered, bundled, or included in the negotiated allowance. Do not assume the answer is the same across facilities or contracts.

Does the robot itself add a charge to your bill?

A hospital may incur costs for acquiring and maintaining robotic equipment, instruments, training, and operations. Those provider costs do not establish a universal patient surcharge. Intuitive Surgical’s SEC filing says most payors generally treat robotic assistance as a tool and do not separately pay more because it is used; individual arrangements and billing practices can vary. If an estimate or bill has a distinct robotic charge, ask the facility and insurer how that line is handled for your specific claim.

The economics for a health system are also not the same as a patient’s bill. The American College of Surgeons’ February 2026 Bulletin describes higher direct costs for robotic-assisted surgery for an index operation while discussing possible downstream savings, such as reduced length of stay or complications, that vary by procedure. It does not establish that robotic surgery always saves money, always costs a patient more, or will shorten a particular patient’s stay. The comparison depends on the operation and the alternative technique, including whether conventional minimally invasive surgery already has strong outcomes.

Medicare tools and outpatient setting

For Original Medicare, Medicare.gov’s Procedure Price Lookup can show national averages and patient responsibility for a code and setting. CMS’s Physician Fee Schedule lookup provides Medicare payment information by code and locality; CMS explains that geographic practice cost indices adjust payment amounts for local practice costs. Neither lookup alone determines every patient’s bill.

CMS’s 2026 outpatient payment rule begins a three-year phaseout of the inpatient-only list, starting with 285 mostly musculoskeletal procedures removed for calendar year 2026. That policy is not specific to robotic surgery. It does not mean a particular robotic procedure can or should be performed as an outpatient; the appropriate setting is a clinical decision, and the patient’s costs depend on the actual plan and services.
