How Much Does Laser Hair Removal Cost? U.S. Prices and How to Budget

Laser hair removal prices vary by area and provider. Learn how to budget for a full course and compare clinic quotes, not just session prices.

In the U.S., laser hair removal has no single standard price: the cost depends on the body area, provider, and treatment plan. One clinic’s menu can give a useful example, but your real budget should be based on a written quote for the full course of sessions recommended for you.

What does laser hair removal cost per session?

Oregon Health & Science University’s January 2026 cosmetic dermatology fee sheet lists these prices per treatment. OHSU says prices are subject to change, so confirm its current fees before booking.

Area OHSU listed price per treatment
Upper lip $150
Chin $200
Face $250
Bikini $250
Axilla $250
Back or chest $350
Back and chest $450
Touch-up $150

OHSU also lists a 50% discount for additional treatment sites of equal or lesser value. This is one provider’s fee schedule, not a national average or a guarantee of what another clinic will charge. OHSU cosmetic dermatology fees

A separate 2026 compilation by BlushLocal reports a median posted price of $208 per area and a middle-80% range of $89–$399 across 31 clinic price lists observed through August 25, 2026. These are published prices in a limited compilation, not a representative U.S. survey, a guaranteed current quote, or the total cost of a full course. How much might a full course cost?

The treatment plan—not just the first appointment—determines what you may spend. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says many patients need 2–6 treatments and typically can return every 4–6 weeks; its overview also notes that six or more sessions may be needed. These are broad guidelines, not an estimate for an individual. Some people later choose maintenance sessions. AAD treatment overview AAD laser hair removal FAQ

To estimate your own course, multiply the clinic’s per-session quote by the number of visits your clinician recommends. Then account separately for any package discount, extra-area pricing, and possible maintenance. For example, if a clinic quotes a price per visit, do not treat that as the course total unless the written quote confirms how many visits are included.

What changes your quote?

  • Treatment area: A small area and a larger area are different purchases. Check whether a quote covers exactly the same boundaries as another clinic’s quote.
  • Number of sessions and package terms: Ask how many visits are included, what additional visits cost, and whether a discount applies to multiple areas.
  • Touch-ups or maintenance: Ask whether these are priced separately and what the clinic means by a touch-up.
  • Provider and location: Clinics set their own fees, and geography affects comparisons. The available price figures do not establish a consistent cross-clinic dataset for ranking providers.
  • Your hair, skin, and treatment area: These factors, along with laser type, affect results and treatment planning, so a price menu cannot determine your suitability or likely number of sessions. AAD treatment overview

How to get a quote you can compare

At a consultation, the AAD recommends asking, “How much will the treatment cost?” It also suggests asking how many treatments you will need and what results to expect. AAD consultation questions

  1. Request the price for the exact area you want treated, stated per session.
  2. Ask how many sessions the clinician recommends and request the estimated total for that course in writing.
  3. Confirm what is included in any package, the price of extra sessions, and whether additional areas or maintenance are charged separately.
  4. Compare quotes only when they cover the same area and a comparable number of sessions; note the clinic’s location and provider qualifications.
  5. Ask who will perform the procedure, their experience treating people with your skin coloring, realistic expected results, and the risks that apply to you.

Does insurance cover laser hair removal?

The AAD says insurance does not cover laser hair removal. Ask the clinic about its payment terms before committing, and base your budget on the written treatment quote rather than assuming insurance will pay. AAD laser hair removal FAQ

Is the lowest quote necessarily the best value?

Not by itself. The AAD warns that treatment in inexperienced hands can cause burns, lasting skin-color changes, or scars, and recommends choosing a board-certified dermatologist. It also says results vary: many patients see a 10%–25% reduction in hair after the first treatment, and some remain free of visible hair for months or years, while regrowth may be finer and lighter. Do not treat those outcomes as a guarantee of complete or permanent removal. AAD treatment overview

Before treatment, tell the provider about a recent tan, a history of keloids or scarring, herpes outbreaks, and current or past isotretinoin or other medication use. AAD preparation guidance advises avoiding tanning and sunless tanner and using daily broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30+ sunscreen before going outdoors. What about at-home devices?

At-home IPL devices are a separate option, not professional laser hair removal. The AAD says home devices take longer to show results, require periodic use to maintain them, and are not suitable for everyone; it advises consulting a dermatologist before use. Compare them as a distinct treatment choice rather than assuming their price or results are equivalent to a clinic’s laser treatment. AAD guidance on at-home devices
