There is no reliable public figure in the available reporting that establishes Joel Osteen’s current annual personal income. Reports say he stopped taking a salary from Lakewood Church in 2005, while identifying book sales and speaking engagements as income sources. Those facts do not reveal his total yearly earnings.

Is Joel Osteen’s annual income publicly known?

No current, independently documented total for Osteen’s personal annual income is established by the sources cited here. His book royalties, speaking income and other personal income are not quantified in the available reporting.

The distinction matters: not drawing a church salary is not the same as having no income. It also does not show how much someone earns from other work or investments.

Does Joel Osteen take a salary from Lakewood Church?

A 2005 Houston Chronicle report said Osteen stopped taking a $200,000 Lakewood Church salary and was living on profits from sales of Your Best Life Now. That is a historical salary figure, not evidence of his current compensation or total income.

In an interview published around 2013, Osteen said he did not take a salary from Lakewood and described book income as a blessing. His statement is attributable to that interview period; it is not a current disclosure of all his income.

How much does he make from books?

The available sources identify books as an income source but do not establish Osteen’s current annual royalties. The frequently repeated claim that he earns $55 million per year from book sales is not verified: TheStreet’s 2026 article says the figure circulates without a credible source.

The Associated Press reported in 2024 that Your Best Life Now had sold nearly 3 million copies. That is a cumulative sales figure for the book, not an annual sales total, royalty amount or measure of Osteen’s personal income. Without the relevant sales periods, contract terms and accounting, copies sold cannot be converted into his yearly earnings.

Why church finances and net-worth estimates are different

Lakewood Church’s finances belong to the organization; they are not automatically Osteen’s personal income. Likewise, net worth is an estimate of assets minus liabilities at a point in time, while annual income is money received during a specified period. Neither an organization’s finances nor a net-worth estimate, by itself, answers how much Osteen makes in a year.

IRS instructions describe compensation reporting categories for officers and key employees at certain tax-exempt organizations. That general guidance does not reveal Osteen’s current personal income or establish what a particular church filing reports.

What can be concluded from the available figures?

  • Current annual total: not established by a reliable public figure in the cited reporting.
  • Lakewood salary: reporting says he stopped taking a $200,000 salary in 2005; this is a past figure, not a current one.
  • Books and speaking: reported income sources, but current annual amounts are not disclosed in these sources.
  • $55 million annual book claim: unverified; TheStreet says it lacks a credible source.
