Its published optional-service-fee page lists paid upgrades at $40–$90 per 500-mile segment on eligible itineraries, but the amount for a particular trip depends on the offer American makes for that flight. The airline says some international prices may fall outside the range because of currency fluctuations and taxes. This is the published range as of October 8, 2026—not a quote or guaranteed total for your itinerary. American Airlines’ optional service fees
What the published upgrade price means
The $40–$90 figure is stated per passenger, per 500-mile segment, for eligible itineraries. It is a fee range, not a universal price for moving into Premium Economy. American does not publish a formula that turns the range into a guaranteed total for every flight. Check the offer attached to your flight or reservation for the actual amount; availability and prices can vary by itinerary.
Do not simply multiply the range by the number of 500-mile blocks in your trip and treat the result as a quote. The airline’s page does not establish that calculation as the price for every itinerary, and it specifically warns that some international prices may be outside the range.
Compare the upgrade offer with buying Premium Economy
Before paying for an upgrade, compare its displayed price with the difference between your current fare and a Premium Economy ticket for the same itinerary. These are different purchase choices: an upgrade offer applies to an existing booking, while buying the higher-cabin fare means purchasing that fare outright. American’s reviewed public fee page does not provide a universal fare-difference formula, so compare the prices shown for your own trip and check the applicable ticket conditions before paying.

Complimentary status upgrades on select routes
American’s policy taking effect August 25, 2026 allows eligible AAdvantage status members booked in Main Cabin to receive complimentary upgrades to Premium Economy on select flights to or from Hawaii and on select coast-to-coast routes, when eligible seats are available. The airline gives JFK–LAX, JFK–SFO, BOS–LAX, DFW–HNL, DFW–KOA, DFW–OGG, PHX–HNL, ORD–HNL and ORD–OGG as examples, and says it may add other flights and routes. Requests are confirmed before departure according to status priority and availability. If an itinerary changes, previously confirmed Business upgrades are honored, according to American’s update. American’s AAdvantage updates
More broadly, American says status members may be considered for complimentary upgrades on eligible American-marketed and operated flights within North America, for themselves and up to one companion traveling on the same flight. Eligibility, capacity controls and seat availability apply; requests are automatic and are confirmed before departure based on status when possible. This general policy does not mean every status member or route qualifies for a Premium Economy upgrade. American’s AAdvantage status information

Systemwide upgrades
A systemwide upgrade is a loyalty benefit, not a cash price. It can move an eligible ticket to the next cabin when space is available; if it cannot be confirmed, the request may be waitlisted. The next cabin depends on the aircraft and the cabin in which the ticket was purchased, so a systemwide upgrade is not automatically a Premium Economy upgrade. American’s upgrade information
What about upgrading with miles?
Do not rely on the old static mileage-upgrade chart as a current quote. American’s terms say it no longer offers those awards for new requests and replaced them with Instant Upgrades, which have their own rules. Check the current terms for the type of upgrade you may be eligible to request. American’s AAdvantage terms and conditions
How to find the price for your trip
- Check the paid upgrade offer shown for your flight or reservation through American. The available sources establish that offers vary, but do not confirm a single current app or website click sequence for every booking.
- Compare the offer with the price difference for buying a Premium Economy fare on the same itinerary.
- Check whether your route, ticket and AAdvantage status qualify for a complimentary upgrade, or whether you can request a systemwide or Instant Upgrade. These options are subject to their respective eligibility rules and seat availability.
- Review the applicable ticket conditions and the terms of the specific offer before paying or using a loyalty benefit.
Why an exact quote depends on your booking
An exact price cannot be established from the published range alone. It depends on the itinerary and the offer American displays for it; international fees may also be affected by currency fluctuations and taxes. Route, travel date, original cabin and fare, upgrade inventory and loyalty eligibility can affect which options are available. Without those details and the offer shown for the booking, no precise trip total can be quoted.
