There is no single fixed price to upgrade to business class on British Airways. A cash offer depends on your destination, current cabin and original ticket, while an Avios upgrade is calculated from the Avios difference between cabins and also requires cash for the flight and applicable charges. The amount and availability must be checked for your specific booking.
What a British Airways business-class upgrade costs
British Airways says the cash cost varies by destination, cabin and the ticket originally purchased. It does not publish a general price or average that applies across bookings. The offer, if one is available, is specific to your itinerary and ticket. Check Manage My Booking for the amount offered on a direct flight-only booking; the ticket rules and available seats affect whether an upgrade is possible.
There are two different ways to upgrade: pay a booking-specific cash amount, or use Avios for an eligible upgrade to the next cabin. They are not interchangeable prices, and neither should be assumed available before checking the booking.
| Option | How the cost is determined | Main constraints |
|---|---|---|
| Cash upgrade | Amount offered for the specific destination, cabin and original ticket; BA does not state a universal price. | Seat availability and ticket rules. |
| Avios upgrade | Avios cost of the next cabin minus the Avios cost of the booked cabin, plus the flight cash amount and applicable taxes, fees and carrier charges. | Eligible fare, reward-seat availability, route, direction and peak or off-peak date. |
Paying cash for an upgrade
For a flight-only booking made directly with BA, sign in to Manage My Booking, select the flight and check for an upgrade offer. If an offer appears, review its price and conditions before accepting. A cash offer is not guaranteed, and a price shown for one booking is not a reliable benchmark for another.

Using Avios to upgrade to business class
BA’s Avios method upgrades a booking by one cabin. On a long-haul itinerary, an upgrade into business may mean moving from premium economy; the cabin names and steps differ on short-haul flights. BA says the Avios calculation is:
Rank #2
- Classic style：360 ° all-around support for your neck, head, and chin， Make your travel and rest easier

Avios required = Avios for the next cabin − Avios for the cabin booked
The amounts depend on the route and whether the date is peak or off-peak. In BA’s published peak, one-way London–New York example, upgrading from World Traveller Plus to Club World uses 30,000 Avios: 90,000 for Club World minus 60,000 for World Traveller Plus. This is an illustration for that route, direction, cabin pair and peak-date example—not a standard price for business-class upgrades.

The Avios amount is not the entire cost. BA says the traveler also pays a cash amount for the flight, plus applicable taxes, fees and carrier charges. Check BA’s Avios upgrade guidance for the current calculation and booking process.
Eligibility and availability
- BA says most cash bookings can be upgraded with Avios, but its lowest World Traveller fares in booking classes Q, O and G are excluded.
- A reward seat must be available in the next cabin. Having enough Avios does not guarantee that a seat is available.
- BA allows eligible upgrades when booking or later, subject to fare restrictions and availability. It does not allow an Avios upgrade at the airport or on board.
How to check before budgeting
- For a direct cash booking: Sign in to BA Manage My Booking, select your flight and look for an upgrade offer. Confirm the amount and ticket conditions shown for that booking.
- For an Avios upgrade while booking: Use BA’s book-and-upgrade process to search for next-cabin availability as you make the booking.
- For an existing booking: Check whether the fare is eligible and whether reward availability exists in the next cabin; then review the Avios and cash amounts BA displays.
- For a travel-agent booking: Ask the agent about an upgrade. BA also describes checking its app or Manage My Booking within three days of travel, or asking at airport check-in, if availability permits.
When a reward flight is different
Booking a full reward flight with Avios is not the same as upgrading an existing paid ticket. BA describes reward flights as requiring Avios plus a cash amount for taxes, fees and carrier charges, with amounts varying by date, destination and cabin. A reward-flight figure therefore should not be treated as the cash price—or the Avios price—of upgrading a particular booking.
