Buying a private jet can mean several million dollars for a smaller or used aircraft and many tens of millions for a large, new one. Operating it can add hundreds of thousands to several million dollars a year. The actual budget depends on aircraft class, age and condition, annual flight hours, location, crew arrangements, maintenance status, and whether you count financing, depreciation and taxes. The estimates below keep purchase price, modeled annual operations and broader ownership costs separate.
What does a private jet cost to buy?
There is no single market price for a private jet: two aircraft in the same class can differ substantially in age, equipment, condition and maintenance status. BusinessJets.com gives 2025–2026 North American ballparks of $3.5 million to $11 million for very light and light jets and $9 million to $30 million for midsize jets. These are guide ranges, not verified transaction prices or universal averages. BusinessJets.com’s ownership-cost guide also identifies region, flight hours, engine cycles and private versus charter use as factors in cost.
For broader context, FlyHangar7 describes a range from around $2 million for a pre-owned light aircraft to more than $100 million for a new long-range aircraft. Its guide also flags unexpected repairs and upgrades, and some of its figures are attributed to third parties, so treat that range as supporting context rather than a detailed price schedule. FlyHangar7’s 2025 guide
| Aircraft category | Published purchase-price range | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Very light and light jets | $3.5 million–$11 million | BusinessJets.com ballpark for North America, 2025–2026 |
| Midsize jets | $9 million–$30 million | BusinessJets.com ballpark for North America, 2025–2026 |
The ranges do not cover every aircraft category or establish what a specific jet will sell for. A buyer’s capital budget may also need to account for inspection and closing, financing, refurbishment or upgrades, and the aircraft’s eventual resale value. The reviewed guides do not provide a comprehensive schedule for those expenses.

What can annual operating costs look like?
CRAFT’s published model estimates annual operating costs by aircraft category at 200 flight hours. The figures below are modeled estimates using 2026 inputs, not audited owner accounts or measured industry averages. They exclude depreciation, financing, refurbishment and upgrades. CRAFT’s cost model and methodology
| Aircraft category | Estimated annual operating cost at 200 hours |
|---|---|
| Turboprop | $643,000 |
| Very light jet | $712,000 |
| Light jet | $1.17 million |
| Midsize jet | $1.50 million |
| Super-midsize jet | $1.82 million |
| Large jet | $2.40 million |
| Ultra-long-range jet | $3.49 million |
These modeled totals combine fixed and variable operating expenses, but they are not a complete measure of the economic cost of ownership. CRAFT reports estimated fixed annual costs ranging from about $310,000 for very light jets to about $1.71 million for ultra-long-range jets. Its variable-cost estimates range from about $1,626 per flight hour for turboprops to about $8,865 per hour for ultra-long-range jets. Those endpoints are class-specific estimates, not a per-hour rate that applies to every jet.
CRAFT says its model uses crew-pay data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, manufacturer or Conklin & de Decker fuel-burn data, a current Jet A price, published hangar rates and stated class estimates for other categories. Actual expenses will vary with aircraft and mission, local prices and operating arrangements. In particular, fuel price and consumption vary by place, aircraft and date.

Which costs make up an ownership budget?
Fixed costs continue while the aircraft is parked
Common fixed expenses include crew salaries and benefits, pilot training, hangar, insurance and management. Subscriptions and other recurring expenses may also apply. Because these costs do not fall to zero when the aircraft is not flying, low utilization can leave an owner paying a substantial fixed bill for relatively few hours of use.

Variable and trip expenses rise with use
Fuel is a major hourly expense. Maintenance, engine reserves, fees and trip-related costs such as crew travel also contribute. More flight hours generally increase variable expenses, while the fixed-cost base remains. The precise mix depends on the aircraft, the routes flown and how the operation is managed.
Purchase price is not lifecycle cost
For a fuller ownership calculation, keep separate lines for operating expenses, acquisition and transaction costs, financing or the opportunity cost of capital, taxes, depreciation, residual sale value and major maintenance or refurbishment events. CRAFT’s annual model excludes depreciation and financing, refurbishment and upgrades; BusinessJets.com’s discussion of total cost of ownership includes financing, depreciation and other costs beyond operations. Neither the purchase-price ranges nor the operating-cost table alone is a complete lifetime-cost estimate.

How does utilization change the economics?
A useful starting framework is annual fixed costs + (variable cost per flight hour × annual hours). It explains why a jet’s annual operating budget cannot be inferred from its purchase price alone: the number of hours flown affects variable expenses, while the fixed-cost base persists. It is not a complete ownership-cost formula unless acquisition, financing or opportunity cost, taxes, depreciation and major events are modeled separately.
For an individual aircraft, replace broad class estimates with a budget based on its maintenance records, expected mission and routes, local fuel and hangar costs, crew plan, insurance and management arrangements. The published model’s 200-hour totals are useful for comparing categories on that stated assumption, but they are not a prediction of an owner’s bill at a different utilization level.

Whole-aircraft ownership is not the only way to arrange private air travel. The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) identifies whole ownership, fractional ownership, charter, flight cards and block charter among the options to consider. Its guidance says the choice should reflect a travel profile and annualized aircraft usage. The NBAA describes its resource as a way to educate members about common ownership and operating options and offer rules of thumb for matching them to on-demand transportation needs. | Option | What the available guidance establishes | What to compare in a contract or quote |
|---|---|---|
| Whole-aircraft ownership | You own the aircraft; operating and ownership costs depend on aircraft, use and cost assumptions. | Upfront capital, fixed and hourly expenses, aircraft availability, operating control, resale and tax considerations. |
| Fractional ownership | Shared ownership combined with dry-lease exchanges and a management company; program terms vary. | Share size, management and occupied-hour fees, term, exit costs, availability and aircraft substitution terms. |
| Charter, including flight cards and block charter | NBAA lists these as alternatives to whole or fractional ownership; the reviewed guidance does not specify universal pricing or terms. | Hourly charges and surcharges, availability, geographic coverage, contract terms and cancellation or exit conditions. |
NBAA’s fractional-ownership FAQ says many programs have a five-year commitment, though early exit or extensions may carry a cost. Fractional owners pay an occupied hourly fee for items such as fuel, maintenance, engine reserves and pilot fees; management fees reflect a pro-rata share of fixed expenses such as hangar, administration, insurance and training. Contract terms vary, and the owner gives up some control over cost management to the provider. NBAA: Fractional Aircraft Ownership FAQ
There is no universal annual-hours break-even point established by these sources. Compare expected hours, capital commitment, recurring fixed charges, hourly fees and surcharges, availability and substitution rules, geographic coverage, contract duration and exit costs, who controls maintenance and operating costs, and whether ownership-specific tax treatment matters to your situation.
How to build a realistic private-jet budget
- Define the mission. Estimate annual hours, trip lengths, destinations, passenger needs and schedule requirements before choosing an aircraft class.
- Set an acquisition budget. Price a specific aircraft and include inspection, closing, financing, refurbishment and upgrade assumptions where applicable.
- Separate fixed and variable expenses. Ask for the aircraft’s crew, training, hangar, insurance and management costs, as well as fuel, maintenance, engine reserves, fees and trip expenses.
- Model more than one utilization case. Show how the budget changes at different annual hours; do not assume that a published 200-hour estimate describes every owner.
- Include the exit and financing picture. State the financing or opportunity cost assumption, expected depreciation and residual value, taxes, and the possibility of major maintenance or refurbishment.
- Get comparable alternatives. Request written whole-ownership, fractional, charter or card terms that state fees, surcharges, availability and contract exit conditions, then compare them against the same travel profile.
A private jet’s purchase price can be only the starting point. The useful number for a buyer is a transparent, aircraft-specific budget that separates annual operations from capital and lifecycle costs—and makes the assumptions behind each figure explicit.
