An “extended car warranty” usually means an optional vehicle service contract bought separately from the manufacturer’s warranty. In the U.S., the Federal Trade Commission says these contracts can cost several hundred to several thousand dollars, but there is no dependable price that applies to every car or contract. Get written quotes for the same vehicle, term, and coverage, then compare the full cost and contract terms—not just the monthly payment.
How much does an extended car warranty cost?
Prices depend on the vehicle, mileage, coverage, contract term, deductible, provider, and payment arrangement. The FTC’s broad consumer guidance gives a range of several hundred to several thousand dollars and notes that a deductible may apply each time the car is serviced or repaired. Recent commercial estimates differ because they use different methods. Treat them as examples, not a guaranteed market rate or a quote for your vehicle.

A monthly figure can make an offer look smaller than it is. Ask for the total amount due over the full contract term, including any installment or financing cost, and confirm whether the quoted payment is recurring for the whole term.

What an extended car warranty actually is
A manufacturer’s warranty is generally included in a new vehicle’s price and covers specified defects or failures for a stated time or mileage, whichever comes first. A vehicle service contract is optional and separately purchased. Sellers commonly call it an “extended warranty,” but the FTC explains that it is not a warranty as defined by federal law because it is sold separately. Contracts may come from manufacturers, dealers, or independent providers. FTC: Auto Warranties and Auto Service Contracts
Contracts do not automatically cover every repair. Some extend time or mileage coverage; some include specified maintenance. The FTC says service contracts typically do not cover accident damage or normal wear and tear. The CFPB notes routine maintenance such as oil changes and tire replacement is typically excluded. What changes the price of a service contract?
- Vehicle and mileage: New or used status, make and model, and odometer reading can affect eligibility and price. California Department of Insurance
- Coverage and term: A longer contract or broader set of covered systems can cost more. Compare the months and mileage limit as well as the named coverage tier; labels such as “bumper-to-bumper” do not replace the contract’s actual list of covered items and exclusions. FTC
- Deductible and claim limits: Check whether the deductible applies per repair, visit, or another unit, and whether the contract limits reimbursement or labor rates. The repair facility may also be restricted. FTC
- Provider and payment method: Identify the company legally responsible for coverage, not only the seller. Compare upfront and installment totals, including financing costs, and look into the responsible company’s complaint history. FTC
- State and contract terms: Rules, terminology, cancellation terms, and provider requirements can vary by state. California’s regulator identifies vehicle type, mileage, coverage and exclusions, and term as major price factors; that guidance should not be assumed to describe every state’s rules. How to compare extended car warranty quotes
- Write down the coverage you already have. Check the manufacturer warranty’s expiration date and mileage, along with any remaining used-car or certified-used coverage. Compare its coverage with the proposed contract so you can see whether you would pay for overlapping protection. FTC
- Get the complete contract before paying. Review covered systems, exclusions, waiting periods, pre-existing-condition rules, maintenance requirements, deductible structure, reimbursement and labor-rate limits, authorized repair locations, towing or rental benefits, and claim-approval steps. Treat a sales promise as unconfirmed unless it appears in the contract. FTC
- Compare offers on equal terms. Ask each seller to quote the same vehicle and mileage, contract term, and coverage tier. Record the upfront price, installment total, deductible, cancellation and refund method, and any transfer fee. Divide total price by the term only as a secondary way to compare offers; it does not replace the full-cost comparison.
- Assess the repairs the contract would actually cover. Consider how long you expect to own the vehicle, how you use it, its condition, and the likely cost of repairs included under the contract. The CFPB advises weighing the contract cost against covered and excluded costs, ownership period, and vehicle use. CFPB
- For a used vehicle, consider an independent inspection. The FTC recommends a mechanical inspection and written report estimating necessary repairs. An inspection can help you understand current condition, but it cannot predict every future breakdown or guarantee a contract will pay for a repair. FTC: Buying a Used Car From a Dealer
- Compare the contract with self-funding. The FTC suggests setting money aside in savings as an alternative to buying a service contract. That choice involves balancing cash reserves, risk, and predictable expenses; there is no universal break-even calculation established by the cited guidance. FTC
Is an extended warranty worth it?
There is no reliable yes-or-no answer based on the price alone. A contract’s value depends on whether the repair is covered, whether the claim is approved, where the repair can be performed, what the provider reimburses, and how long you keep the vehicle. Compare the total contract cost and likely deductibles with the repair costs the contract actually covers, while accounting for exclusions and claim limits. The CFPB recommends considering cost, covered and excluded expenses, ownership duration, and vehicle use. CFPB
Before buying, find out how to make a claim, who arranges repairs, and whether towing or rental expenses are fully reimbursed. The FTC recommends checking these details along with the provider responsible for coverage and its complaint history. FTC

Can you cancel an extended car warranty?
The CFPB says consumers have the right to cancel a vehicle service contract at any time. The refund amount and method depend on the contract’s cancellation and refund clause and applicable state rules, so review those terms before signing rather than assuming you will receive a particular amount. Calls, texts, and mail warning that a warranty is about to expire may advertise a separately sold service contract, and can falsely imply a connection with your automaker or dealer. The FTC warns against pressure to provide financial information or a down payment before receiving contract details.
