Most paid VPNs cost about $5–$16 per month on monthly billing, or roughly $2–$8 per month when an annual or multiyear promotion is paid upfront. The advertised monthly figure can hide a large immediate charge, bonus months, taxes, and a higher renewal price.

The figures below use a clearly dated 2025 price snapshot, not guaranteed live prices. VPN offers change frequently, so check the final checkout total and renewal terms before subscribing.

How much does a VPN cost?

There is no single universal average price. A realistic budget depends on the billing term, provider, country, features, number of simultaneous connections, and whether the quoted price is promotional.

Plan type Typical cost What to expect
Free $0 Usually limited locations, data, devices, speed, or streaming access
Monthly paid plan About $5–$16 per month Most flexible, but usually the highest effective rate
Annual plan About $40–$100 upfront Roughly $3–$8 per month during the initial year
Two-year or longer promotion About $2–$5 per month equivalent Typically billed for the entire discounted term upfront
Flat-rate privacy service About $5 per month A straightforward monthly price rather than a large long-term discount

These are broad market ranges rather than fixed industry rates. Prices can differ by region, currency, tax, platform, product tier, promotion, and billing channel.

Comparisons are meaningful only when the plans are equivalent. A VPN-only subscription should not be directly compared with a bundle that also includes cloud storage, a password manager, identity monitoring, or other services.

Monthly versus annual versus multiyear plans

Monthly plans: best for flexibility

Monthly billing is usually the most expensive option, but it can be financially sensible when you need a VPN for only a short period. It may suit a temporary trip, a month of public-Wi-Fi use, compatibility testing, or anyone who does not want to commit to a long subscription.

The key benefit is flexibility. The key cost is the premium you pay for it. In the 2025 comparison, mainstream monthly prices were approximately $11.95–$15.45, compared with Mullvad’s flat €5 monthly price listed on its official site.

Annual plans: lower cost with moderate commitment

Annual plans commonly reduce the initial effective monthly price to about $3–$8. However, the provider generally charges the full annual amount at checkout. A plan advertised at $4 per month may therefore require a $48 payment immediately, before tax.

Before choosing an annual plan, calculate:

  • First-term total: the amount charged today.
  • Initial monthly equivalent: first-term total divided by the number of paid months.
  • Renewal total: the amount scheduled to be charged later.
  • Renewal monthly equivalent: renewal total divided by the renewal period.

Multiyear plans: lowest advertised rate, highest commitment

Two-year and longer offers often produce the lowest headline rates, sometimes around $2–$5 per month. But the customer normally pays the entire discounted term upfront. A $2.99 monthly equivalent could represent an immediate charge of roughly $70–$90 once the full term and any included months are considered.

Multiyear plans are most defensible when you expect to use the service throughout the commitment period and the renewal terms are acceptable. They are less attractive if you are testing a provider, need only one month, or may switch services soon.

What does “$2.99 per month” really mean?

That figure may be an effective calculation rather than a monthly payment. Before purchasing, answer these questions:

  1. Is the subscription monthly, annual, two-year, or longer?
  2. Is the quoted amount charged every month or paid in full upfront?
  3. Are bonus months included in the calculation?
  4. Is the price for the first term only?
  5. What amount will be charged at renewal?
  6. Are tax, VAT, and currency-conversion costs excluded?
  7. Does the quote apply to the basic tier or a bundle?
  8. Is the price different on the provider’s website and mobile app?

Always compare the checkout total—not just the large monthly number shown in an advertisement.

Why VPN prices vary so much

Price reflects more than encryption. Common cost drivers include:

  • Billing duration and the size of the introductory discount.
  • Bonus months added to a long-term offer.
  • Simultaneous-connection limits and router support.
  • Server locations and network capacity.
  • Streaming, torrenting, and platform support.
  • Extra tools such as ad blocking, tracker blocking, malware protection, password management, cloud storage, or identity monitoring.
  • Customer support and business administration features.
  • Dedicated or static IP options.
  • Regional pricing, sales tax, VAT, currency conversion, and payment method.
  • The provider’s renewal policy.

How much does a VPN cost after renewal?

The initial promotional price is not necessarily the long-term price. Some providers renew at a higher standard rate, while others advertise renewal terms closer to the introductory rate. Windscribe’s comparison of VPN costs specifically separates introductory and renewal pricing.

Before paying:

  • Read the checkout summary for the renewal amount and date.
  • Save the receipt and confirmation email.
  • Set a calendar reminder several days before renewal.
  • Turn off auto-renewal if you intend to use only the initial term.
  • Check whether canceling auto-renewal leaves access active until the paid period ends.

Do not assume that canceling auto-renewal immediately cancels service. The exact process depends on the provider and billing channel.

Are free VPNs worth using?

A reputable free VPN tier can be reasonable for occasional privacy protection, but “free” often means accepting limits on locations, data, devices, speed, or streaming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Proton VPN says its free plan includes unlimited data, no artificial speed limit, no advertisements, and one simultaneous VPN connection. Its free plan restricts server choice, and the company does not guarantee streaming access on the free tier in the same way it does on specified paid plans. See its free-versus-paid comparison for the provider’s current feature distinctions.

Windscribe says its free plan provides 10 GB per month with a confirmed email address, or 2 GB without one, and access to servers in 11 countries.

Unknown free VPN apps deserve more caution. Some may rely on advertising, extensive data collection, aggressive permissions, or unclear ownership. A free browser proxy may also protect only browser traffic, not every application on the device.

A free plan may be inadequate for streaming, a large household, many country choices, peer-to-peer use, or several simultaneous devices. A money-back guarantee is also not automatically a free trial: it normally requires payment first and may have provider- or payment-method-specific conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a cheap VPN worth it?

Yes—if the service meets your actual needs and the low price is not hiding an unaffordable renewal. Price alone says little about privacy or reliability.

Before choosing a budget plan, look for:

  • A clearly written privacy policy and transparent ownership.
  • Evidence supporting security and no-logs claims, such as independent audits where available.
  • Apps for your operating systems and devices.
  • A kill switch and DNS/IP leak protection.
  • Enough simultaneous connections for your household.
  • Server locations appropriate for travel or other intended uses.
  • A clearly stated refund policy.
  • Transparent first-term and renewal prices.

A slightly more expensive plan can be better value if it supports a whole household, while a cheaper plan can be wasteful if its connection cap forces you to buy multiple accounts.

Which type of VPN fits your needs?

Occasional user

Choose month-to-month billing or a reputable free plan. Prioritize easy cancellation, supported devices, and a clear refund policy over the lowest long-term rate.

Privacy-first buyer

Examine jurisdiction, ownership, account-information requirements, payment options, open-source apps, independent audits, and technical documentation. Mullvad advertises anonymous accounts and a flat €5 monthly price, while Proton VPN advertises open-source apps, no logs, and a free plan funded by paid users. These are different models, not identical guarantees.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

See Mullvad’s VPN information and Proton VPN’s pricing page for their own current claims.

Household with many devices

Compare simultaneous connections, router support, household terms, and device compatibility. Proton VPN’s paid Plus plan advertises up to 10 simultaneous devices, while Surfshark’s pricing material advertises unlimited simultaneous connections. Verify the current terms before relying on either figure: installed devices, simultaneous connections, and permitted household users are not necessarily the same thing.

Streaming user

Use a paid plan with a refund period and check the specific streaming services and countries you need. Streaming availability is service-, server-, country-, and time-dependent. Do not treat a provider’s general marketing as a permanent guarantee.

Budget-conscious user

Start with a legitimate free tier, a short monthly subscription, or a flexible custom plan. Windscribe says its Build-a-Plan option has a $3 minimum, with selected locations priced at $1 per month, while its pricing explainer lists Pro at $9 monthly or $69 annually. • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

Traveler

Monthly billing may be more economical than paying for a multiyear plan you will barely use. Check app support, connection stability on the networks you expect to use, the countries available, and whether local taxes or currency conversion alter the checkout amount.

Do VPNs offer refunds?

Many major VPNs offer a 30-day money-back period, but conditions can vary by provider, payment method, app-store purchase, business plan, or repeat refund request. The 2025 comparison listed 30-day guarantees for NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN, Mullvad, and Private Internet Access. Proton VPN also states that its paid plans include a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Check the provider’s own terms before purchase, especially if you subscribe through Apple or Google rather than directly through the provider. A refund request may need to go through the same billing channel used for payment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a VPN cover every device?

Not necessarily. “Number of devices” can refer to:

  • Devices on which the app can be installed.
  • Connections active at the same time.
  • Household members permitted under the subscription terms.
  • Devices protected through a VPN-configured router.
  • Accounts included in a family or business plan.

For a family, calculate the cost per person or active device. An apparently cheaper plan with a low connection cap may be more expensive than a slightly higher-priced unlimited-connection plan.

Is a VPN necessary?

Not for everyone. A VPN can help conceal your IP address from websites and protect traffic from some local-network observers, such as those on an untrusted public Wi-Fi network. It shifts some trust from your internet provider or local network to the VPN provider.

A VPN does not make you anonymous, prevent phishing, remove malware, fix weak passwords, stop every form of tracking, or guarantee access to every streaming service. It also does not make unsafe downloads or suspicious links safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to avoid overpaying

  1. Compare the upfront total. Divide it by the actual paid term, not merely the headline monthly figure.
  2. Separate paid months from bonus months. Note both cost per paid month and cost per month of actual service.
  3. Find the renewal price. Treat it as a separate price, not an afterthought.
  4. Check taxes and currency. The final amount may exceed the advertised US-dollar price.
  5. Compare equivalent tiers. Do not compare a VPN-only plan with a security bundle without labeling the difference.
  6. Check simultaneous connections. Make sure the limit matches your household.
  7. Confirm supported devices and router options.
  8. Read the refund conditions. A guarantee is not necessarily a no-payment trial.
  9. Check the billing channel. Website and mobile-app prices and cancellation procedures can differ.
  10. Set an auto-renewal reminder. Cancel or change the subscription before the next charge if you do not want to continue.

Bottom line

Budget around $5–$16 for a monthly VPN, $40–$100 upfront for many annual plans, or roughly $2–$5 per month equivalent for a discounted multiyear offer. The cheapest advertised rate is rarely the whole financial picture. Compare the amount charged today, the renewal amount, taxes, features, connection limits, and refund conditions before deciding whether a free, budget, privacy-focused, household, or premium VPN plan is the best value.
