A useful published reference point is $1,904 for a cat’s first year, but that is the ASPCA’s estimate from its 2021 update—not a current universal price or a kitten-specific quote. The total includes $1,149 in annual costs and $455 in initial costs; it does not include an adoption fee. Your actual budget depends on local fees, what the kitten has already received, its health, and the supplies and care you choose.
What does the $1,904 first-year estimate include?
The ASPCA’s 2021-updated estimate separates recurring annual spending from initial setup and medical costs. Treat these figures as a dated planning reference, not a current quote. The annual total includes health insurance; adoption fees are not listed.

How much does it cost to adopt a kitten?
There is no single adoption fee that applies everywhere. Organizations set their own fees, and what is included can differ by shelter and by animal. As one location-specific example, the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County lists a $140 fee for kittens under six months. Its package includes a wellness examination, spay/neuter surgery, initial vaccines, and microchip registration; the shelter notes that fees can vary based on animal-specific factors. That Washington fee is an example, not a national average. Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County adoption fees

Before comparing two kittens’ fees, request an itemized list of included services and the kitten’s medical records. Ask what remains due, including follow-up vaccinations, tests, parasite treatment, or surgery. A low fee alone does not show that the overall cost will be lower.
What veterinary costs should you plan for?
First-year care may include an initial exam, parasite screening or treatment, vaccine boosters, preventive care, and spay/neuter surgery. The exact schedule depends on the kitten’s age, records, health, and circumstances, so a veterinarian should identify what is due rather than assuming every kitten needs the same services.

- Plan for follow-up: Kittens usually need return visits for vaccine boosters and preventive care during their first year. Ask the clinic for a written schedule and estimate.
- Discuss spay/neuter timing: AAHA advises planning the procedure before five months of age, with timing discussed with the veterinarian. ASPCA also gives five months as guidance for female spay and male neuter. AAHA New Kitten Checklist ASPCA cat-care guidance
Request an estimate that separates exam fees, vaccines, parasite treatment, testing, microchipping, and surgery. That makes it easier to compare clinic quotes and avoid paying twice for a service already included in the adoption package.

How can you build a realistic kitten budget?
- Start with the adoption paperwork. Record the fee and mark which services—such as vaccines, surgery, or microchipping—are already covered.
- Get a first-year veterinary plan. Ask a local clinic to price the remaining exam, vaccine, preventive-care, testing, and surgery needs for this kitten.
- Price recurring basics locally. Estimate food, litter, and parasite prevention using the products and schedule you expect to use.
- List one-time setup items. Check what you already own before budgeting for a carrier, litter equipment, bowls, scratching surface, toys, and grooming tools.
- Decide how to handle unexpected care. Consider whether savings or insurance would fit your household’s ability to manage an emergency bill.
Local quotes matter: the ASPCA figure is an older estimate, while a shelter fee reflects one organization’s package and location. The ASPCA identifies local shelters as possible sources of low- or no-cost spay/neuter programs. You can also compare preventive-care fees among veterinary practices and ask about a vaccine protocol tailored to your kitten. Do not reduce the budget by skipping medically important care.

Should you include pet insurance in the budget?
The ASPCA’s 2021-updated estimate includes $348 for annual health insurance, but that is not a current market quote or a promise of savings. Premiums and coverage vary, and the reviewed sources do not establish a current premium benchmark. If an emergency or serious illness could strain your finances, compare current plan terms—including exclusions, deductibles, reimbursement, and coverage limits—before deciding whether insurance suits your household.
