For the 2026 license year, an individual annual Minnesota fishing license costs $25 for a resident and $51 for a nonresident adult. Short-term, youth, family and lifetime licenses have different fees and eligibility rules; the total can also change if the angler needs a stamp or buys the license from an agent.

2026 Minnesota fishing license prices

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) publishes fees by license type and eligibility. These are license fees, not gear costs. Annual licenses follow the license year, rather than lasting 12 months from the date you buy them: the DNR’s 2026 resident individual license is valid through February 28, 2027.

License option 2026 fee Who it covers or other details
Resident individual annual angling $25 Ordinary individual license is for residents ages 18–89.
Nonresident individual annual angling $51 Nonresident adults age 18 and older; the applicable $5 nonresident surcharge is already included.
Resident individual 24-hour angling $12 Short-term license; exempt from the trout/salmon stamp.
Nonresident individual 24-hour angling $14 Short-term license; exempt from the trout/salmon stamp.
Nonresident individual 72-hour angling $36 For 72 consecutive hours; exempt from the trout/salmon stamp.
Resident ages 16–17 annual angling $5 Youth license; check current rules for the angler’s circumstances and limits.
Nonresident youth annual angling $5 The DNR lists a youth option; rules for children under 16 differ.
Resident married combination annual angling $40 Each spouse may have an individual possession limit; stamps are not included.
Nonresident family annual angling $68 Covers one or both parents and dependent children under 16, with individual limits under the DNR description; stamps are not included.

Fees and license details are from the Minnesota DNR 2026 licensing catalog and 2026 Minnesota Fishing Regulations. The captured catalog information does not establish the resident 72-hour fee, so check the live catalog rather than relying on an estimate.

Compare the $25 annual license with the $12 24-hour option. The short-term license costs less for a single day, but it does not cover later trips during the license year.

Do children need a Minnesota fishing license?

Minnesota residents younger than 16 do not need a fishing license under the 2026 regulations. A youth license can matter when a young angler needs to hold an individual limit, so do not assume that being exempt from the license requirement answers every limit question. The DNR catalog says nonresidents under 16 may fish under a parent or guardian’s license, including a family license, or purchase a youth license. Check the current rules for the child’s age and situation.

Lifetime fishing license fees

Lifetime licenses require a substantial upfront payment and are priced by age when the application is received. These fees are not directly comparable with one year of fishing. The DNR lists the following initial fees:

See the DNR’s resident lifetime license fees and nonresident lifetime license fees for application details. The DNR says nonresident lifetime applications take about three weeks to process; fees are nonrefundable, and an age-based fee is determined by the applicant’s age when the application is received. Annual authorization may be required by law when a lifetime-license holder uses the license. The DNR issues those authorizations at no fee, with a convenience fee for telephone or internet transactions.

Extra costs and requirements to check

Nonresident surcharge

The 2026 regulations say a $5 surcharge is included in applicable nonresident license fees. Do not add another $5 to the listed $51 annual fee.

Buying from a license agent

The DNR’s Resident Individual Angling License product page says an original license purchased at an agent location has a $1 issuing fee added; a duplicate issued at an agent costs $0.50. This agent-location fee should not be assumed to apply to every online purchase.

Stamps and activity-specific rules

A base angling license may not be the full cost for every kind of fishing. Short-term licenses listed above are exempt from the trout/salmon stamp, while the resident married and nonresident family licenses do not include stamps. Check the current Minnesota fishing regulations for stamp and permission requirements that apply to your fishing activity and waters.
