California fishing license prices for 2026
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) lists these 2026 sport fishing license fees. The 365-day options are for people age 16 or older; the ten-day option is nonresident-only.

Which license price applies to you?
Resident rate
CDFW generally defines a resident as someone who has continuously lived in California for at least six months immediately before applying. Active-duty U.S. military members and Job Corps enrollees are also included in CDFW’s resident definition. If your status is unclear, confirm eligibility with CDFW before selecting the resident rate.

Nonresident rate
If you do not qualify as a California resident under CDFW’s definition, the nonresident annual license is $174.14. For a shorter visit, compare the one-, two-, and ten-day options against the dates you intend to fish; the ten-day license is available only to nonresidents.
Extra costs for some waters and species
A base license may not cover every activity. CDFW lists these 2026 fees for additional validations and report cards:

Whether an add-on is needed depends on the species, location, and fishing activity. Check CDFW’s current rules for your planned trip rather than assuming the base license fee is the full cost. See CDFW license, validation, and report-card requirements.
How long is a California fishing license valid?
A 365-day license runs for 365 days from the purchase date; it is not limited to the calendar year. Short-term licenses are valid for their stated duration. CDFW says short-term license documents purchased online are printed after the transaction and are valid from the date specified.

Where to buy and how to show your license
CDFW sells sport fishing licenses online, through license agents, and at CDFW license sales offices. For an online 365-day purchase, a printed temporary license document can be used immediately for up to 30 days while the permanent license is mailed. CDFW online license sales FAQs.
The CDFW License App can display supported 365-day and short-term licenses and certain validations. However, app proof that you purchased a report card does not replace the physical card: when an activity requires a report card, CDFW says you must have that card in your immediate possession. When you need a license
CDFW says a sport fishing license is required for anyone attempting to take fish, mollusks, crustaceans, invertebrates, amphibians, or reptiles in inland or ocean waters, subject to exemptions. A license alone may not satisfy the rules for a particular species or location, so check applicable validations and report-card requirements as well.

CDFW says sport fishing license fees are established in California law and adjusted to reflect changes in the cost of goods and services using the Implicit Price Deflator. The adjustment varies; CDFW cited an 8.48% adjustment applied to 2023 fees as an example, not as a fixed annual increase. The figures above are for the 2026 schedule, so check CDFW’s fee page for later years.
