There is no single coast-to-coast Amtrak fare: the price depends on your cities, travel dates, route and accommodation. Amtrak’s January 2026 reference price for a USA Rail Pass was $499, but that pass is for multi-stop Coach travel—not a guaranteed ticket price for a specific cross-country itinerary. For a current total, price the trains for your dates in Amtrak’s booking system.
What does the $499 Amtrak price cover?
Amtrak’s January 16, 2026 announcement listed $499 as the regular price of its USA Rail Pass. The pass allows up to 10 train segments over 30 days, making it a comparison for travelers planning several stops rather than a fixed coast-to-coast ticket. Amtrak says pass prices can change and are not guaranteed until reservations are made. See the January 2026 announcement and the USA Rail Pass page for current information.
Amtrak also advertised a $250 promotional price for bookings made January 14–20, 2026. That limited sale has ended; it is not a currently available price.
When is a pass worth comparing with separate tickets?
Compare the cost of the pass with the total for the individual train segments you actually plan to take on your dates. The pass is designed for multi-stop travel; if you are making one direct cross-country journey, do not assume the pass is the fare or the cheapest option. Amtrak’s pass terms require a confirmed reservation for each train. The pass itself is not a boarding ticket, and a segment you miss without canceling is treated as used.

- The Lake Shore Limited is an overnight Amtrak intercity passenger train that runs between Chicago and either New York City or Boston via two sections east of Albany. The train began service in 1975; its predecessor was Amtrak's Chicago–New York Lake Shore, which operated during 1971–72.
- It is named for the New York Central (NYC) Lake Shore Limited, which was discontinued in 1956, and uses the NYC's former main line, part of which is now the Empire Corridor.

Pass rules also affect whether it fits your itinerary: it is valid for 120 days after purchase, and once travel starts, you have 30 days to complete the trip. Listed exclusions include Auto Train, Acela, certain Thruway bus connections and the Canadian portion of trains operated jointly with VIA Rail Canada. Check the current terms before buying, as rules and prices may change.
How accommodation changes the cost comparison
The USA Rail Pass covers Coach travel, not a private room. Coach seats recline and provide legroom; private-room choices include Roomettes and Bedrooms. Amtrak says private-room travelers receive onboard meals and station lounge access, so compare the total cost and included amenities separately rather than treating the pass price as a private-room estimate. Amtrak describes these options on its long-distance travel page.

Budget beyond the train fare
Amtrak allows up to two checked bags, two carry-on bags and one personal item at no charge, subject to its baggage rules. Lodging away from the train, local transportation and personal expenses are separate from the rail fare. Amtrak Vacations and other rail packages may bundle additional services; check what each package includes before comparing its total with a ticket or pass price. Details on baggage and packages are on Amtrak’s long-distance travel page.
