How Much Does a British Royal Family Member Make Each Year?

There is no single annual salary for British royals. The Sovereign Grant funds official work, while the King and Prince of Wales have distinct estate and private income arrangements.

There is no single annual salary for a royal family member. For the British royal family, the key distinction is between public funding for official work and an individual’s income from an estate or private assets. The Sovereign Grant is a Royal Household budget, not a paycheck shared among the royals.

Do British royals get a salary?

Not one standard salary. The Sovereign Grant funds the Royal Household’s official duties and the upkeep of occupied royal palaces. HM Treasury states that it “does not provide any member of the Royal Family with an allowance or personal income from the government” in its Sovereign Grant Act 2011: guidance, last updated 5 August 2025.

The grant may cover official expenses incurred by working royals through the Royal Household. That does not establish that each member receives a personal salary, or disclose how much any individual makes. The grant total should not be divided by the number of royals and described as per-person pay.

How much is the Sovereign Grant?

The Royal Household’s 2025-26 financial report sets out these institutional funding figures:

Period Grant amount What it represents
2025-26 £132.1 million Total Sovereign Grant to the Royal Household; £67.5 million was allocated to preserving and protecting occupied royal palaces.
2026-27 £137.9 million Grant level confirmed by the Royal Trustees in March 2026.
2027-28 through 2031-32 £99.9 million each year Funding reset announced on 25 June 2026 for the five-year period following completion of palace reservicing.

These are budgets for the institution and its official work, not annual income figures for the King or other family members. For context, the earlier 2024-25 report recorded a total grant of £86.3 million: £51.8 million in core funding and £34.5 million for Buckingham Palace reservicing. That earlier figure is not the current grant.

How does the King’s income work?

The King’s finances include distinct sources that should not be confused with the Sovereign Grant. The Royal Household describes the Privy Purse as income from the Duchy of Lancaster, used for both official and private expenditure by the King. Separately, the King has personal income from a private investment portfolio and private estates, which is used for private expenses. The Royal Household’s Royal Finances explainer describes these categories but does not provide one annual personal-pay figure that can stand for all of them.

The reported tax bills are not income figures: the Royal Household reported £11.7 million in personal tax for the King for tax year 2023-24 and £12.9 million for tax year 2024-25. A tax bill cannot be used by itself to calculate an exact annual income.

How is the Prince of Wales funded?

The Prince of Wales is funded predominantly by the Duchy of Cornwall and receives its annual net surplus. He uses a large proportion of it for public and charitable work. This is estate-derived income, not a conventional salary. He does not receive money from the Sovereign Grant, although the grant supports some of his official activities.

The available official explanation describes the funding mechanism, but it does not establish a current Duchy net-surplus figure here. Do not treat an unsourced or differently defined number—such as personal income, expenditure or wealth—as the Prince’s annual income.

Why royal income figures are easy to misread

A headline number is only useful when it identifies the recipient, period and type of money involved. A Royal Household grant, an estate’s net surplus, personal income, expenditure, tax and wealth are different measures. They cannot be compared as if each were a person’s salary.

  • Recipient: Is the figure for the Royal Household, the King, the Prince of Wales or another person?
  • Period: Which financial or tax year does it cover?
  • Definition: Is it a grant, income, net surplus, spending, tax or an estimate of wealth?
  • Purpose and basis: Is the money for official duties or private expenses, and is the figure gross or net?

As Keeper of the Privy Purse James Chalmers put it in the Royal Household’s 2025-26 report, published 25 June 2026: “While Royal finances can sometimes appear complex, the underlying system is clear in principle, structured in law and refined over time to ensure the Monarch can serve with independence, accountability and in the long-term interests of the nation.”
