How Much Does a Bass Fish Cost? Pond-Stocking Prices Explained

For pond stocking, Texas A&M’s example ranges from $57.50 to $132.50 per acre for 50 small largemouth bass, depending on whether they are pellet-trained. It is an estimate, not a current local hatchery quote.

If you mean a live largemouth bass for stocking a private pond, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension gives an example of $57.50–$82.50 per acre for 50 untrained, 2–4-inch fish, or $92.50–$132.50 per acre for 50 pellet-trained fish of the same size. Those are source-specific stocking estimates, not a guaranteed current retail price. For a price you can use, request a quote from a commercial hatchery serving your area.

“Bass fish” can also mean a fish to eat, an aquarium fish, or a wild-caught fish. The figures below apply to pond-stocked fingerlings; comparable prices for those other meanings are not established here.

What does it cost to stock bass in a private pond?

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension estimates the cost of stocking 50 northern largemouth bass, each 2–4 inches long, at $57.50–$82.50 per acre when the fish are untrained. Its example rises to $92.50–$132.50 per acre for 50 pellet-trained fish of the same size. The figures are stocking estimates on a per-acre basis, not a current quote from a seller. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension’s pond-stocking guidance does not establish what a hatchery near you will charge today.

Do not treat the upper or lower end as a universal per-fish price: each estimate is for a group of 50 fish per acre, and the trained and untrained fish are different offerings.

Why published bass prices are not directly comparable

Some published figures describe what it costs a hatchery to produce a fish; others describe a stocking estimate or historical purchase range. They use different fish sizes, production settings, locations, and assumptions, so combining them into one price range would be misleading.

Source and figure What it describes
Texas A&M: $57.50–$82.50 per acre for 50 untrained, 2–4-inch northern largemouth bass; $92.50–$132.50 per acre for 50 pellet-trained fish of the same size Stocking estimates, not a current local retail quote. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension

Publication date is not stated in the search result. University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, ETB260
University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension: $0.46–$0.75 per 2-inch fingerling; $0.81–$1.60 per 4–6-inch fingerling Historical purchase ranges from the publication era, not current local quotes. Exact publication year is not established. University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension, FSA9612

What affects the price a hatchery quotes?

  • Fish size: Larger fingerlings take additional rearing, and published cost and purchase figures vary by length.
  • Training and rearing: Pellet-trained bass require additional hatchery work. In Texas A&M’s example, that option costs more than untrained fish.
  • Forage and feed: Raising larger fingerlings on forage can add cost. Texas A&M also reports source-specific feed figures of $18–$25 per 50-pound bag for bass diet and $10–$13 per 50-pound bag for ordinary pond-fish diet; its page does not establish these as current prices. It notes that pellet-trained bass may return to eating fish if forage is available.
  • Order and delivery: The available figures do not establish a current hatchery minimum order or shipping charge. Ask the seller to itemize both rather than assuming they are included.
  • Location and rules: State requirements can affect which fish may be sold or stocked, and which hatcheries or permits are acceptable.

How to compare local hatchery quotes

Ask each seller to quote the same fish and the same delivery terms. This makes it easier to compare the total cost rather than a headline price that excludes important details.

Check your state’s stocking rules before you buy

Rules differ by jurisdiction. North Carolina’s wildlife agency says state hatcheries stock public waters and directs people stocking private lakes and ponds to commercial hatcheries. North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is one example of how sourcing guidance can vary.

Florida, for example, says only genetically authenticated Florida bass may be sold as food fish or stocked in private ponds, with documentation and applicable permits; it also describes restrictions on culturing and selling other live largemouth bass. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. New Jersey requires a fish-stocking permit before fish are introduced into any waters, regardless of ownership, and requires purchases from an approved hatchery source. New Jersey Fish and Wildlife. These state examples do not determine the rules where you live; check your own agency before arranging a purchase.

What if you mean a bass to eat or keep in an aquarium?

The pond-stocking estimates do not answer those questions. The available price information does not establish a comparable cost for bass sold as food, aquarium fish, or the value of a wild-caught fish. The intended use and location matter, so get a price from a seller that offers the specific kind of bass you mean.
