How Much Do You Need to Invest Each Month to Reach a $10 Million Goal?

A $10 million goal requires about $48,600 monthly over 10 years or $6,721 over 40 years under a 7% nominal-return illustration. Learn how time, returns, inflation, fees and your starting balance change the calculation.

There is no universal monthly investment for a $10 million goal. With a zero starting balance, end-of-month deposits, monthly compounding and a constant 7% nominal annual return divided into monthly periods, the required contribution ranges from about $48,600 a month for a 10-year goal to $6,721 a month for a 40-year goal.

Those are mathematical scenarios, not forecasts or promises. Markets do not deliver a fixed return, and the result changes with your timeline, starting assets, return assumption, inflation, fees, taxes and deposit timing.

The monthly amounts under one set of assumptions

The following calculations target $10 million in future nominal dollars. They assume no opening investment, deposits made at the end of each month, monthly compounding and a constant 7% nominal annual rate. Contributions are rounded to the nearest dollar.

Time to goal Number of deposits Required monthly contribution
10 years 120 $48,600
20 years 240 $23,060
30 years 360 $12,290
40 years 480 $6,721

The longer horizons require less each month because earlier deposits have more time to earn returns and compound. The figures are our calculations under the stated assumptions; they are not published SEC targets, guaranteed outcomes or individualized investment advice.

How the calculation works

This is the future-value calculation for an ordinary annuity, which treats each deposit as arriving at the end of its month:

monthly contribution = target × monthly rate ÷ ((1 + monthly rate)number of deposits − 1)

For the table, the target is $10,000,000, the monthly rate is 0.07 ÷ 12, and the number of deposits is the number of months in the selected horizon. Dividing the nominal annual assumption by 12 and compounding monthly is a convention for this illustration; it is not a claim that markets actually grow smoothly every month.

What an existing balance does

If you already have invested assets, those assets can compound alongside new deposits. The zero-balance table therefore overstates the contribution needed for someone who has a substantial portfolio. A version of the formula that includes an opening balance is:

monthly contribution = (target − starting balance × (1 + monthly rate)number of deposits) × monthly rate ÷ ((1 + monthly rate)number of deposits − 1)

If the projected growth of the starting balance already reaches the target, the calculated new contribution can be zero. Real portfolios will not follow the constant-return path exactly, so treat that result as a planning estimate rather than a guarantee.

How sensitive is a 30-year plan to the return assumption?

A one-percentage-point change in the assumed annual return materially changes the modeled payment. For a zero starting balance, end-of-month deposits and a 30-year horizon, the scenarios are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Assumed nominal annual return Illustrative monthly contribution
6% $21,550
7% $12,290
8% $6,940

These values show why a plan can appear dramatically easier when its assumed return rises. They do not show what an investor will earn. Investor.gov says some experts use a broad 7% to 10% estimate for long-term diversified U.S. stocks based on historical averages, while also emphasizing that investments carry risk and do not have a set rate of return. That range is general educational context, not a recommended portfolio assumption or a promise.

Five inputs that can change your required investment

1. Time horizon

Time is the most powerful lever in the examples. Extending the horizon gives each deposit more opportunities to compound and generally lowers the monthly amount needed for the same modeled return. A shorter deadline does the opposite: it leaves less time for growth, so contributions must supply more of the target.

2. Starting balance

Enter your current invested balance instead of assuming zero. Include only assets genuinely available for this goal and be consistent about whether the balance is before or after any taxes or withdrawal costs you expect to pay. The SEC’s Savings Goal Calculator includes an initial-investment field for this reason.

3. Return assumption

A higher assumed return lowers the calculated deposit, but it also represents more uncertainty. Investment values can fall, returns can arrive in a different sequence and a long-run average does not prevent losses during the years when you need the money. Use multiple return cases rather than building your entire plan around the most optimistic number.

4. Deposit timing and compounding frequency

The table uses end-of-month deposits. Depositing at the beginning of each month gives each payment slightly more time in the account and changes the result. A different compounding convention also changes the mathematics. Investor.gov’s calculator lets you select a compounding frequency, so match that setting to the way your account or projection is defined.

5. Inflation

The $10 million target in the table is nominal: it means $10 million in the future dollars of the target year. If you want the purchasing power of $10 million today, your future nominal target must be higher. A simple planning relationship is:

future nominal target = desired today-value × (1 + assumed inflation rate)years

The table does not forecast inflation. Choose an inflation assumption separately and label it clearly, because changing it changes the target before you even calculate the monthly deposit.

Fees and taxes can reduce the amount that compounds

The calculations ignore investment fees and taxes. A fee deducted from the account reduces the dollars that remain invested; taxes can reduce contributions, distributions or the amount available when you eventually use the money. Even small recurring costs can materially affect a multi-decade plan because they are also lost growth. SEC investor education advises people to pay attention to fees.

To make a projection more realistic, use an estimated return after the expenses that actually apply to your account, or model fees as a separate annual drag. Keep tax treatment separate from the market-return assumption: a pretax account, a tax-advantaged account and a taxable account can produce different spendable amounts even when their investment performance is identical.

How to run your own scenarios in Investor.gov’s calculator

The official SEC Investor.gov Savings Goal Calculator is free and lets you vary the major inputs. Use it to test your situation rather than copying a single headline number.

  1. Open the Savings Goal Calculator on Investor.gov.
  2. Enter $10,000,000 as the savings goal, or enter a larger nominal target if you are converting a today-dollar goal for inflation.
  3. Enter your current invested amount in Initial investment. Enter zero only if you are starting from nothing.
  4. Set Years to grow to your intended deadline.
  5. Enter an estimated annual interest or return rate. Run at least a lower, middle and higher case instead of treating one rate as certain.
  6. Select the compounding frequency that matches your projection; monthly is the convention used for the table above.
  7. Record the resulting contribution, then repeat the calculation with a different horizon, rate, starting balance and inflation-adjusted target.

The calculator’s output is only as useful as the assumptions entered. It does not predict market paths, future tax law or the sequence of gains and losses.

A practical way to turn the estimate into a plan

Set the goal definition first

Decide whether $10 million means a nominal account value or a specific amount of future purchasing power. Write down the target date, the account balance included today and whether the goal is measured before or after taxes.

Use a range instead of one payment

Build a base case and at least one less-favorable return case. If the lower-return case produces a payment you cannot afford, lengthen the horizon, increase contributions gradually, add an appropriate starting balance or reconsider the target. Do not solve an affordability gap solely by assuming a riskier return.

Automate and review

Automated transfers can make the intended contribution consistent, but automation does not remove investment risk. Review the plan when your income, savings rate, time horizon, fees, tax circumstances or risk tolerance changes. A review is an opportunity to update assumptions, not a reason to chase whichever asset recently performed best.

Match risk to the deadline

SEC guidance says asset allocation should reflect both time horizon and risk tolerance, and that diversification spreads exposure across investments. A distant goal may tolerate more fluctuation than money needed soon, but a long horizon does not make losses impossible. Your allocation should be one you can maintain through market declines without abandoning the plan.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using a return as a promise: A constant 7% path is a calculator assumption, not a market contract.
  • Ignoring the opening balance: Starting from zero when you already have investments can make the required payment look unnecessarily high.
  • Mixing nominal and real dollars: A $10 million future balance is not automatically equal to $10 million of today’s purchasing power.
  • Leaving out fees and taxes: A gross return projection can overstate what remains available to spend.
  • Changing deposit timing without changing the model: Beginning-of-month and end-of-month contributions are not identical.
  • Focusing only on the average return: The sequence and volatility of actual returns can affect whether you reach the goal by a particular date.
  • Treating the calculator as a recommendation: It illustrates arithmetic; it does not select an investment, account or risk level for you.

Bottom line

Under the stated 7% nominal, monthly-compounding illustration, reaching $10 million from zero takes about $48,600 per month over 10 years, $23,060 over 20 years, $12,290 over 30 years or $6,721 over 40 years. Your real figure requires your starting balance, deadline, inflation definition, return range, fees, taxes and contribution timing. Run those inputs through the SEC’s free calculator, compare conservative and optimistic cases, and treat every result as a scenario rather than a promise.
