To generate $2,750 a month, or $33,000 a year, in gross investment income, you would need $825,000 invested at a hypothetical 4% annual yield. That is a calculation, not a forecast: the amount changes with the yield, and neither a dividend nor a fund distribution is guaranteed. The estimate is before taxes, fees, inflation, and any changes in payout or portfolio value.
How much capital does a $2,750 monthly target require?
First convert the monthly goal to an annual one: $2,750 × 12 = $33,000 a year. Then divide that annual income target by an assumed annual yield. At 4%, the calculation is $33,000 ÷ 0.04 = $825,000.

The yield is an input you choose for the estimate, not a rate promised by the market or by a particular investment. The following scenarios show how sensitive the capital requirement is to that assumption. All figures are hypothetical, gross, and before taxes and fees.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Assumed annual yield | Capital for $33,000 gross annual income | Approximate monthly gross income |
|---|---|---|
| 2% | $1,650,000 | $2,750 |
| 3% | $1,100,000 | $2,750 |
| 4% | $825,000 | $2,750 |
| 5% | $660,000 | $2,750 |
| 6% | $550,000 | $2,750 |
These are arithmetic illustrations, not current yield quotes, investment recommendations, or evidence that a portfolio can maintain a given payment. A higher assumed yield reduces the amount in the calculation, but it does not make the income safer. The investment’s price can fall, its payout can change, and the income may come with risks that are not visible in the yield figure alone.

The formula
Capital required = desired annual income ÷ assumed annual yield.
For example, a 3% assumption is written as 0.03, so $33,000 ÷ 0.03 = $1,100,000. To estimate monthly income from a portfolio amount, reverse the calculation: portfolio value × assumed annual yield ÷ 12. These calculations assume the yield applies to the full amount invested throughout the year and do not account for taxes, transaction costs, changing prices, or changing distributions.
What the estimate does—and does not—mean
The table answers a gross-income arithmetic question. It does not establish how much you would have left to spend, whether payments would arrive monthly, or whether the investment would retain its value. An investment can generate cash distributions while its share price or net asset value declines. A distribution is cash paid out; it is not, by itself, a measure of investment performance.

The SEC’s August 19, 2026 Fund Distributions – Investor Bulletin states, “Distributions are not guaranteed,” and notes that “A fund can perform poorly and still make distributions.” The bulletin advises investors to consider total return and standardized yield rather than judging a fund only by its distribution amount. It also explains that distributions may include return of capital. The bulletin reflects the views of the SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance; it is not a Commission rule or individualized investment advice.
Return of capital is especially important when a payout appears large. It is a return of some of the investor’s own capital rather than income earned by the investment. In a taxable account, it generally reduces the investor’s adjusted cost basis and can affect the taxable gain when shares are sold. A headline distribution rate therefore cannot tell you, on its own, how well an investment is performing or how much income it has generated.
How to turn the target into a usable estimate
- Define the spending goal. Decide whether $2,750 is the amount you want before tax or the amount you need available to spend after tax. The scenarios above target $2,750 gross per month.
- Annualize the target. Multiply $2,750 by 12 to get $33,000 a year. This makes the target comparable with annual yield figures.
- Choose scenarios, not a promised rate. Calculate more than one yield assumption so you can see how much the capital estimate changes. Do not treat the highest-yield scenario as automatically attainable or appropriate.
- Evaluate an investment’s actual disclosures. For a specific stock or fund, review current issuer information, including its distribution policy, yield methodology, fees, risks, and recent distribution history. A payment schedule or recently paid distribution does not establish that future payments will match it.
- Assess the whole portfolio. Consider total return, possible loss of principal, diversification, liquidity, and fees alongside cash paid out. A calculation based on one yield cannot replace those assessments.
- Estimate spendable income separately. In a taxable account, use the distribution’s reported tax character and your own circumstances. Tax treatment varies by account type and investor, so a gross target does not translate into one universal after-tax figure.
Dividend stocks, funds, REITs, and interest are not interchangeable
Different investments can produce cash, but the source and risks of that cash differ. Compare them by the reliability and variability of distributions, exposure to loss, diversification, fees, liquidity, and tax character—not by yield alone.

| Income source | What the payment represents | Key considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Individual dividend-paying stocks | Cash dividends declared by a company | The company’s performance affects both the share price and its capacity or decision to pay dividends. Neither the dividend nor the stock’s value is assured. A concentrated position makes results more dependent on that issuer. |
| Mutual funds, ETFs, and closed-end funds | Fund distributions, which may include dividends, capital gains, or return of capital | A regular payment schedule does not promise a fixed amount or establish strong performance. Review total return and standardized yield as well as the source and amount of distributions. |
| REITs | Distributions associated with real-estate investment structures | Publicly traded and non-traded REITs have different liquidity and valuation characteristics. SEC investor education materials identify liquidity, valuation transparency, fees and conflicts, and distributions funded from offering proceeds or borrowings as concerns to examine for non-traded REITs. |
| Bonds and cash equivalents | Interest, not dividends | These can be considered as other sources of investment income, but their risks and returns vary by product. Do not count interest as dividend income when describing the source of cash. |
This distinction matters when comparing a stated yield with the $33,000 annual target. A fund’s distribution rate, a company dividend yield, and interest on a bond are not necessarily calculated or taxed in the same way. Use the issuer’s current disclosures to understand what a particular figure measures; the hypothetical yields in the table above are only inputs to the arithmetic.
Taxes can make the spendable amount different
The $2,750 target in the scenarios is gross, not take-home income. For U.S. taxpayers, taxable dividends are generally reported as ordinary income, while qualified dividends are a subset that may receive lower capital-gain tax rates if the requirements are met. The payer reports qualified-dividend amounts on Form 1099-DIV.
Under IRS Publication 550 (2025), the general holding-period condition for qualified dividends is that the investor hold the stock for more than 60 days during the 121-day period beginning 60 days before the ex-dividend date. Special rules apply to certain preferred stock. A cash dividend is therefore not automatically a qualified dividend.

REIT dividends generally are treated as ordinary income rather than receiving the reduced rates available to qualified corporate dividends. Fund distributions can also include capital gains or return of capital, each with a different tax treatment. The IRS explains that return of capital is not a dividend and reduces adjusted basis; it may affect taxable gain when shares are later sold.
Tax treatment depends on the type of distribution, the account holding the investment, and the taxpayer’s circumstances. Investors in taxable accounts should consult the payer’s tax reporting and applicable IRS guidance. Tax-deferred and tax-free accounts have separate rules. Because these factors differ from person to person, the gross capital estimates cannot establish a universal portfolio size for net monthly income of $2,750.

Why a higher yield is not a shortcut
Yield is useful for translating an income target into an initial estimate, but it compresses several different things into one number. It does not show whether the distribution is sustainable, whether the investment’s price is likely to fluctuate sharply, or how much of the payment may be a return of capital. A higher yield can lower the calculated capital requirement while increasing uncertainty about the income or principal.

For that reason, do not choose a portfolio merely because its displayed yield makes the target seem reachable with less capital. The SEC identifies risk, diversification, fees, and liquidity as relevant investment considerations. For funds, compare distributions with total return and standardized yield. For a concentrated position, account for how much the outcome depends on one company. For a non-traded REIT, understand the liquidity, valuation, fee, conflict, and distribution-funding issues before treating its stated payout as spendable income.
How to interpret the result for your own plan
If you use 4% as an illustrative yield, the answer is $825,000 invested to produce $33,000 in gross annual distributions under the calculation’s assumptions. If your chosen assumption is lower, the required amount rises; if it is higher, the arithmetic amount falls. Neither result tells you whether an investment will deliver that yield in the future.
Use the scenarios as a sensitivity check, then investigate the specific investments and account context that would determine actual cash flow. A sound estimate separates three questions: how much gross cash a yield calculation implies, how variable and sustainable the underlying payments may be, and how much of those payments would remain available after taxes and costs. Only the first question is answered by the table.
