The best-documented figure is a reported $440,000 per episode for each primary cast member in 2011—not a confirmed current salary. The Los Angeles Times said that amount was the cast’s reported rate before a new two-year contract, whose terms were not disclosed. No cited source establishes what the principal actors earn today.

Reported Simpsons voice-actor pay, by year

The widely repeated figures come from separate contract negotiations. They describe reported rates at particular points in time, not a verified, continuous pay schedule.

Year Reported figure What it describes
2004 $125,000 per actor per episode The Los Angeles Times reported this as the six actors’ pay before a contract dispute. It was not the resulting settlement rate. Source
2008 Nearly $400,000 per episode The Guardian, citing U.S. media reports, said a four-year settlement reportedly raised top voice actors’ pay to nearly this amount. The contract figure was reported, not officially disclosed in the article. Source
2011 $440,000 per primary cast member per episode The Los Angeles Times reported this as the cast’s rate before a new two-year agreement, citing people close to the negotiations. The new deal’s terms were not disclosed. Source

Because the reports refer to different negotiations and do not disclose the final terms of every deal, they do not establish that all six actors received identical terms after each settlement.

Why $440,000 is not a current salary figure

The $440,000 figure is explicitly tied to reporting from 2011. The Los Angeles Times said Fox sought to reduce the reported rate to about $250,000 per episode, while the actors offered to accept $300,000 in exchange for back-end payments. Those were negotiation positions—not proof of the final agreement. The same report said the new two-year contract’s terms were undisclosed. Los Angeles Times, 2011

Consequently, multiplying $440,000 by the number of episodes in a later season would not yield a reliable estimate of an actor’s current annual income. The sources do not establish later individual contract rates, episode counts worked by each actor, or other compensation terms.

Show revenue is not cast salary

During the 2011 negotiations, TheWrap reported estimates from a study commissioned by the actors: $3.95 billion in cumulative show revenue and about $3.07 billion in production costs. These were study estimates, not audited company disclosures, and they do not show how much any actor earned. TheWrap, 2011

TheWrap also reproduced Fox’s historical statement: “We cannot produce future seasons under its current financial model.” That remark belongs to the 2011 dispute and should not be read as a description of the show’s present financial position. TheWrap, 2011

Residuals do not reveal individual Simpsons earnings

SAG-AFTRA’s 2020 television animation agreements summary describes a general residual formula that distributes 6% of distributor gross receipts among cast, with the allocation taking account of factors including how long an actor worked on a program and how much the actor was paid. That is union-contract context, not a disclosure of the Simpsons cast’s individual contract terms or residual checks. It cannot be applied to the show’s reported revenue to calculate an actor’s income. SAG-AFTRA, 2020 television animation agreements summary
