The last air-cooled Porsche 911 generation is the Type 993, whose production ended in 1998. For ordinary Carrera examples, recent U.S. guide figures put a 1997 Carrera Cabriolet in good condition at $57,667–$71,000 and a 1998 Carrera Cabriolet in good condition with average specification at around $65,000. Those are configuration-specific estimates, not a universal price for every 993: body style, trim, mileage, condition, originality and service history can change the comparison substantially.
What counts as the last air-cooled 911?
The 993 is the final air-cooled generation of the Porsche 911. Porsche says the generation was produced from 1993 through 1998, with 68,881 cars built. In the United States, it is commonly described by model years 1995–1998; “993” is the clearer generation label because production years and model years are not identical.
The 993 name covers a range of cars, not one uniform model. Carrera, Carrera S and 4S, Turbo and Turbo S, RS and GT2 versions differ in specification and rarity, so a price attached to one should not be treated as a price for all.
What do ordinary 993 Carrera examples cost?
Two U.S. Hagerty guide examples offer a useful, limited snapshot of standard Carrera Cabriolet values:

| 1997 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet, United States | $57,667–$71,000 | Hagerty’s July 2026 guide range for a car in good condition. |

These numbers are not direct substitutes for one another: they refer to different model years and valuation descriptions. They also are not guaranteed sale prices. Hagerty identifies condition, mileage, options and history as factors in value. Transmission, body style, originality, modifications and the date of an actual sale also matter when comparing individual cars. See Hagerty’s 1997 valuation page and its 1998 Carrera Cabriolet page for the specific guide contexts.
Why can some 993s cost far more?
Rare or high-performance variants belong in a separate comparison from a standard Carrera. Porsche Classic says just over 5,000 993 Turbo and Turbo S cars were produced from 1995 to 1998. That production figure helps explain why a Turbo or Turbo S should not be valued using a Carrera Cabriolet estimate; it does not, by itself, establish a particular current price.

RS and GT2 versions are also distinct categories. A specialist guide for the UK market places rare Turbo Cabriolets, RSRs and GT2s in substantially higher tiers than ordinary Carreras. It gives £500,000–£600,000 for a good-to-best Turbo Cabriolet, says GT2 prices start around £750,000 and can reach £1 million for the best examples, and states that an RSR adds about £25,000 to its comparison. The guide was published about two years before access, so treat those as dated UK specialist context—not current U.S. asking prices or a live valuation. The guide also says Carrera 2 and Carrera 4 versions sell for much the same in its UK-market discussion. Read the Hagerty UK 993 buying guide.
How to make a meaningful price comparison
Before deciding whether a quoted figure is relevant, match the car and the type of number being quoted. A guide estimate, asking price and completed auction sale answer different questions.

- Exact model and year: distinguish Carrera, Carrera S/4S, Turbo/Turbo S, RS and GT2, and record the model year.
- Body and transmission: compare like with like, such as coupe with coupe or Cabriolet with Cabriolet, and note the transmission.
- Condition and mileage: a guide’s condition category is not a substitute for inspecting the specific car or checking its mileage.
- History and originality: review service and ownership records, options, and any modifications.
- Market and currency: keep U.S. dollar values separate from UK pound figures; local market and currency matter.
- Evidence type and date: identify whether the number is a guide estimate, advertised asking price or completed sale, and when it was recorded.
Hagerty’s 1997 valuation page also displays 367 vehicles sold and $70 million in total sales volume for a 12-month 1994–1998 Porsche 911 market summary. That roll-up spans many variants and model years; it is not a standard-Carrera sale price or a direct valuation of one 993. Public sale records are useful only when the exact configuration and sale date are clear.

A price guide can help screen a listing, but it cannot confirm the condition or likely costs of a particular car. Compare the car’s records and specification against other examples, then arrange an inspection by a qualified Porsche specialist before committing. Ask the seller for service documentation, ownership history and details of modifications, and verify that the car’s condition supports the valuation category being used.

No original MSRP comparison is established here, so these figures do not show how much a 993 has appreciated since new. Nor should a classic-car purchase be treated as a guaranteed investment: guide values and individual sale results are evidence about a market, not promises of future resale proceeds.
Production and model background
Porsche’s anniversary history records 68,881 examples of the 993 generation, produced from 1993 through 1998. Porsche Classic’s overview records just over 5,000 Turbo and Turbo S cars across 1995–1998. These production counts describe the historical supply, but they do not replace a current, configuration-specific valuation.
