How much do MLS players make in 2026?
It depends on roster category and on which salary measure you mean. Major League Soccer lists a 2026 senior minimum salary of $113,400 and a reserve minimum of $88,025. At the top of the MLSPA guide, Lionel Messi has a $25 million annualized base salary and $28,333,333 in annualized average guaranteed compensation.

The figures come from different official sources: the minimums are in MLS’s 2026 roster rules, while Messi’s pay figures are in the MLSPA’s 2026 salary guide. The guide is a dated snapshot of MLS players under contract on April 16, 2026, not a live payroll tracker.
What is the average MLS salary?
There is no single meaningful “average MLS salary” unless the population and calculation are specified. MLSPA describes an average base salary for senior-roster players who are not Designated Players, excluding both Designated Players and supplemental or reserve players. The accessible 2026 guide material defines that measure but does not state its numeric value, so an exact league average cannot be responsibly supplied from that source.

That defined average would not represent every contracted player: it excludes both the league’s star Designated Players and players outside the senior roster. It also measures base salary, not annualized guaranteed compensation. Readers should treat any average as incomplete unless its year, roster population, and salary measure are identified.
Base salary and guaranteed compensation are different
The MLSPA guide reports “Current Annualized Base Salary” and “Annualized Average Guaranteed Compensation.” Base salary is not the same as total guaranteed contract value spread over time.
- Base salary: the annualized base-pay figure.
- Annualized average guaranteed compensation: includes base salary, signing and guaranteed bonuses annualized over the guaranteed contract term (including option years), plus annualized marketing bonuses and agent fees. It excludes performance bonuses because they are not guaranteed.
For example, MLSPA illustrates that a player with a $500,000 annual base salary, a four-year guaranteed term including option years, and a $100,000 signing bonus has average annual guaranteed compensation of $525,000. The guide covers each player’s contract with MLS; it does not include compensation from individual teams or their affiliates.
Who is the highest-paid MLS player?
Lionel Messi, of Inter Miami, tops the 2026 MLSPA guide with $28,333,333 in annualized average guaranteed compensation and a $25,000,000 annualized base salary. The guaranteed figure is not a measure of every possible source of income, and it should not be mistaken for base salary.

What is the MLS minimum salary?
MLS has separate 2026 minimums by roster category:

These amounts are the minimums specified in MLS’s 2026 roster rules. “MLS minimum salary” is therefore ambiguous unless it says which roster category applies.
Why the salary budget charge is not a player’s pay ceiling
For 2026, MLS sets a $6,425,000 club salary budget and an $803,125 maximum salary budget charge. Those are roster-accounting figures, not a cap on a player’s actual compensation.
Under the Designated Player rule, a club may acquire up to three players whose compensation and acquisition costs exceed the maximum salary budget charge; the club is financially responsible for the excess. MLS generally determines a salary budget charge and Designated Player status by averaging guaranteed amounts payable over the guaranteed contract term. A budget charge should therefore not be read as the player’s salary or as the maximum a Designated Player can earn.
