The examples suggest a wide price spread, but tonnage alone does not explain what a model costs or whether it will suit your wood and workload. Compare the specifications and ownership details that affect your use, not just the advertised force rating.
Where can you buy a log splitter?
- Home Depot: Its log-splitter catalog includes electric and gas examples across several tonnage ratings.
- Lowe’s: Its best-seller listings show electric and gas models, including hydraulic and kinetic categories.
- Boss Industrial: The manufacturer’s site lists splitters along with accessories such as wedges, stands, wheeled trailers, and parts.
Before choosing a seller, check the exact model’s current price and local stock, delivery or pickup charges, assembly requirements, return terms, and service support. These details depend on the product and location and were not established for an individual buyer.

What should you compare before buying?
Power source and electrical requirements
Electric models avoid a gasoline engine but need a suitable power supply; gas models have different fueling and maintenance needs. Read the exact model’s electrical requirements rather than assuming all electric splitters use the same circuit. For example, the Boss Industrial 16-ton electric specification sheet calls for 115 volts and a 20-amp circuit breaker. That is a requirement for that model, not a general rule for electric splitters.
Force rating and the logs you split
Check the manufacturer’s force rating alongside the maximum log length and diameter, then compare those limits with the wood you expect to process. A higher tonnage figure should not be treated as a substitute for confirming the machine’s actual capacity. For example, the Champion model 201091 product sheet specifies 40 tons of force and a maximum log length of 24 inches. Those figures apply to model 201091, not other Champion splitters.
Cycle time and work pace
A shorter published cycle time may be useful when splitting repeatedly, but it does not by itself establish real-world throughput. The Champion 201091 sheet lists a 12-second cycle time; use that as a model-specific specification, not a promise of how quickly a job will be completed.

Position, handling, and transport
Consider where you will operate and store the machine, how heavy logs will be handled, and whether you need to move it between locations. Check whether it can work horizontally and vertically, whether it is towable, and its weight. Champion model 201091 is described as towable and operable horizontally or vertically; its sheet lists a net weight of 672.5 pounds.
Setup and ownership costs
Confirm what the package includes and what you will need to provide, including oil, fuel, assembly, electrical service, and any accessories. Review warranty and service arrangements for the exact model. The Champion 201091 sheet lists a two-year warranty and refers to gasoline, engine oil, and hydraulic oil in its product materials; verify current package contents and terms with the seller or manufacturer. The sheet also cautions that “Specifications, descriptions and illustrations are subject to change without notice.”
