The available official prices are local charges for specific services—not complete funeral budgets. For example, Kolkata’s 2024–2025 municipal schedule lists adult burial at ₹100 and adult cremation at ₹200 for a wooden crematorium or ₹220 for an electric one; Goa’s government page lists burial at ₹200 and cremation at ₹100. Neither set of fees establishes what families elsewhere pay or what a funeral costs in total.
What the published charges cover—and what they do not
Government schedules can show the charge for a defined municipal service at a particular place and time. They do not, by themselves, add up a household’s funeral spending. The Kolkata schedule includes charges for specified services, while the Goa page publishes burial and cremation fees. Neither gives a comprehensive total including transport, materials, rituals, food, memorial events, or private services.
That distinction matters when comparing figures: an official fee is not necessarily the amount a family pays for all arrangements. The sources available do not establish a nationally representative estimate of household spending, and local fees should not be treated as a national average.
Documented local fees
| Location and source date | Published charge | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Kolkata Municipal Corporation, 2024–2025 schedule | ₹100 | Burial of a person above 12 years. |
| Kolkata Municipal Corporation, 2024–2025 schedule | ₹200 | Adult cremation at a wooden crematorium. |
| Kolkata Municipal Corporation, 2024–2025 schedule | ₹220 | Adult cremation at an electric crematorium. |
| Directorate of Education, Government of Goa; page updated July 8, 2026 | ₹200 | Burial fee listed on the government page. |
| Directorate of Education, Government of Goa; page updated July 8, 2026 | ₹100 | Cremation fee listed on the government page. |
| Directorate of Education, Government of Goa; page updated July 8, 2026 | ₹50 | Child fee; the page does not specify which service it applies to. |
These schedules differ by locality and service, and their figures have distinct scopes. They are useful as examples of published charges, not as a like-for-like comparison of complete funeral costs. See the Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s 2024–2025 schedule and the Goa government’s burial and cremation page for the published details.

Why a single India-wide total would mislead
- Local fees are not uniform. The Kolkata and Goa figures are set by different authorities and cover specified services in their respective jurisdictions.
- A service charge is not a household budget. These schedules do not price every possible expense involved in a family’s arrangements.
- Rites and arrangements vary. The available sources do not support a reliable cost comparison across religions, regions, or household spending levels.
- No national spending estimate is established. The sources reviewed do not provide a nationally representative figure for what households spend on funerals and last rites.
When death occurs abroad: compare local arrangements with repatriation
For a death abroad, next of kin may need to choose between burial or cremation where the death occurred and repatriating the deceased. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office’s India bereavement guidance advises contacting travel insurance promptly: the insurer may help with arrangements or cover some costs. It also notes that a funeral director can explain local options and costs. These are practical steps for cross-border cases, not evidence of ordinary funeral prices in India. Read the FCDO’s India bereavement guidance.
Death registration is a separate administrative process. The FCDO guidance describes a medical cause-of-death report followed by registration with local authorities. If human remains are being brought into India, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s IHR Port Health Establishment says public-health clearance is required and sets out documentation and packaging requirements. For relevant imports, it describes advance intimation of at least 48 hours; remains cannot leave the airport until the health officer gives written permission. These requirements concern international transport, not local funeral pricing. See the Ministry’s requirements for human remains brought from abroad.

Financial assistance in West Bengal
West Bengal’s Somobyathi scheme page describes one-time assistance of ₹2,000 for eligible poor families toward rites, rituals, and incidental cremation or burial expenses. This is a state-specific scheme, not a national entitlement, and eligibility matters. Check the West Bengal Department of Urban Development & Municipal Affairs scheme page for its terms.

On May 14, 2021, the National Human Rights Commission issued an advisory to the Centre and states concerning dignity and the rights of the dead. It recommended dignified treatment, access to local transport, dignified last rites for unclaimed or unattended bodies, and encouragement of electric crematoriums. The announcement is an advisory, not a price schedule or confirmation that a particular service is currently available locally. Read the NHRC advisory announcement.
