How Much Do Banks Charge for an International Money Transfer?

Bank wire fees are only part of the cost of sending money abroad. Compare the exchange rate, possible third-party charges, total sender debit, and recipient’s net amount.

There is no single price: a bank transfer’s cost can include the sending bank’s fee, an exchange-rate markup, and charges from intermediary or recipient banks. The amount depends on the sending bank and account, destination, currencies, transfer amount, channel, and route. To find your cost, request a quote for the exact transfer and compare both the total debit from your account and the amount the recipient is expected to receive.

What banks may charge: published examples

These examples show how bank pricing can work; they are not a universal rate or a quote for your transfer. Fees and eligibility can change, so confirm the current terms with the bank.

Bank and scope Published charge or condition Other cost notes
Wells Fargo, U.S. digital and branch wires Digital wire charges are up to $30, depending on account type; a branch wire costs $40. Eligible consumer accounts are not charged for digital wires sent in foreign currency. Wells Fargo says its foreign-currency exchange rate includes a markup. Third parties or other banks may also charge fees. Wells Fargo Digital Wires FAQs
Bank of America, U.S. international wires Fees depend on account type and wire type; the page does not state one fee that applies to every customer. Other institutions, foreign taxes, and process-related charges may apply. Its foreign-currency exchange rate includes a markup. For covered consumer remittance transfers, the bank says it must disclose exact fees imposed by it or its agent banks, though exact agent-bank charges may not be available for some requests. Bank of America international wire transfers
HSBC India, outward foreign-currency wires 0.3% of the transfer value, with a ₹100 minimum and ₹1,500 maximum, plus a ₹200 cable charge for same-currency wires and applicable taxes. The OUR option, where the sender bears local and overseas charges, adds ₹1,200 plus applicable taxes. The schedule is effective 1 April 2026. Correspondent and receiving banks may still impose additional charges. HSBC India lists an inward wire processing fee of ₹300 plus applicable taxes, waived for HSBC NR and Premier customers. These charges apply to HSBC India, not other countries or banks. HSBC India fees and charges

Why the stated wire fee is not the whole cost

Sending-bank fee

The bank may charge a flat fee or a percentage. The price can vary by account, amount, and whether you send online or at a branch; some accounts or transfer types may qualify for a waiver.

Exchange-rate markup

When the bank converts your money, it may use an exchange rate that includes a markup. That cost is separate from the stated wire fee, so a transfer advertised with no wire fee can still deliver less foreign currency than you expect. Wells Fargo notes that its rate may vary by currency pair, amount, channel, and timing, and that extra markup may apply outside regular market hours or on weekends.

Intermediary and recipient-bank charges

A payment may pass through correspondent banks, depending on the institutions’ relationships and the route used. An intermediary or the recipient’s bank may deduct a charge; the number of banks involved and the deduction are not universal. Taxes may also apply under local rules.

How to compare quotes fairly

Ask each bank or provider to quote the same transfer: the same amount, source and destination currencies, recipient country, funding method, and payout method. Compare the result rather than looking at the wire fee alone.

  1. Total sender debit: How much will leave your account, including stated fees?
  2. Exchange rate: What rate will be applied? If possible, compare it with a current public reference rate to understand the conversion difference.
  3. Other charges: Are intermediary and recipient-bank fees included, estimated, or still liable to be deducted? Are taxes additional?
  4. Net amount received: How much does the recipient expect to receive after conversion and any known deductions?
  5. Timing and certainty: When does the quote expire, what is the expected delivery time, and which charges are estimates rather than fixed amounts?

For U.S. consumer remittance transfers covered by Regulation E, disclosure rules address fees and estimates. The CFPB’s official interpretation recognizes that possible routes and intermediary charges can affect estimates; a disclosure does not mean every international payment has one guaranteed, fixed all-in price. How to interpret the global benchmark

The World Bank reported an average cost of 8.69% in Q3 2025 for remittances using a bank account as the payment instrument, based on 2,229 services recorded. This is a category average in its Remittance Prices Worldwide database—not a universal bank-wire price, a bank-fee-only figure, or a prediction for a particular transfer. The measure separates transfer fees from foreign-exchange margins. World Bank Remittance Prices Worldwide

What you need to get a specific price

The examples and benchmark cannot determine your charge without details of the actual transfer. Ask your bank for a current quote using the sending and receiving countries, amount, currencies, account type, and online or branch channel. If comparing another transfer service, check availability for that corridor and compare its live quote on the same basis; these examples do not establish that any provider is always cheaper.
