IATA’s June 7, 2026 outlook forecast that airlines worldwide would earn $4.50 in net profit per passenger transported in 2026. That is an industry-wide average—not the amount an individual airline keeps from your ticket, and not a final audited result.
What does “profit per passenger” mean?
IATA’s figure is net profit per passenger transported: the industry’s projected net earnings divided across passengers. Net profit reflects costs, interest and taxes. It is different from revenue per passenger, the fare you pay, or operating profit, which is reported separately.
The $4.50 is an average across the global airline industry. It does not mean every passenger produces the same profit, or that each airline earns that amount on each ticket. Individual results vary by carrier and circumstances.
Why did the 2026 forecast fall?
IATA’s June 2026 update attributed the lower outlook to war-related disruption in the Middle East and high fuel prices. It forecast industry operating expenses of $1.117 trillion, up 13%, while revenue was expected to rise 9.4% to $1.165 trillion. IATA also forecast average 2026 jet fuel prices of $152 per barrel, almost 70% above its $90-per-barrel comparison for 2025. These are forecasts, not final results. IATA’s June 7, 2026 outlook

The outlook projected $23.0 billion in total net profit, a 2.0% net profit margin and $48.0 billion in operating profit, alongside 5.1 billion passengers. Dividing the rounded total net profit by the rounded passenger count gives about $4.51, consistent with IATA’s stated $4.50 per passenger. The measures are related but not interchangeable.
How has IATA’s estimate changed?
Forecasts are snapshots based on assumptions at the time, not a consistent series of final results. IATA’s estimate for 2026 was revised downward between December 2025 and June 2026.

The earlier 2026 forecast of $7.90 and the revised $4.50 are different forecast vintages. They show how changing fuel costs, disruption, passenger volumes and assumptions can alter an industry outlook; they should not be read as a finalized historical comparison.

What should a passenger take from the number?
- It is not your airline’s profit on your ticket. The figure is a global industry average, not a per-carrier or per-fare calculation.
- Profit is a thin buffer relative to the business. IATA’s June 2026 outlook paired the $4.50 forecast with a 2.0% net margin, so costs and disruptions can materially affect the result.
- Check the date and measure. A useful comparison needs the same period, geography, passenger definition and profit measure—net or operating—and should distinguish forecasts from reported outcomes.
