There is no reliable, confirmed ranking of the five How I Met Your Mother leads’ final-season salaries. The clearest contemporary report puts all five in a shared range of $90,000 to $120,000 per episode in 2009; later sources disagree about their final-season pay. Here is what the available reporting supports—and what it does not.
Reported pay, ranked by how well it is supported
Because the sources do not establish a dependable actor-by-actor order, the most accurate ranking is by evidence quality rather than by a potentially misleading salary leaderboard.

- Best-supported: $90,000–$120,000 per episode in 2009, shared across the five leads. TV Guide reported on January 9, 2009, that Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris, and Alyson Hannigan had renegotiated with 20th Century Fox and would receive this range—two to three times their previous pay. It also reported that one year had been added to their original seven-year contracts. The report attributes the deal information to The Hollywood Reporter; it does not publish the contracts or break the range down by actor. TV Guide’s 2009 report.
- Retrospective estimate: $250,000 per episode for each of the five by the final season. Celebrity Net Worth gives this figure for the principal cast and separately describes Hannigan’s later-season pay as $225,000–$250,000. The cited page does not provide contract documentation or a robust source trail for the figures, so they should be treated as estimates, not verified individual salaries. Celebrity Net Worth’s account.
- Conflicting retrospective estimate: $225,000 for most leads and $400,000 for Harris. First Curiosity published these figures in 2023 while acknowledging that official figures are unavailable. The claim conflicts with the equal-$250,000 account and is not corroborated by the contemporary report. It is not a sound basis for declaring Harris the highest-paid lead. What the figures do—and do not—tell us
The 2009 range is not a five-person ranking
TV Guide reports one range for the group, not a separate rate for Radnor, Segel, Smulders, Harris, or Hannigan. It supports the conclusion that the leads’ reported pay increased after renegotiation, but it cannot show who earned more than whom.
Final-season figures remain estimates
The $250,000 and $225,000–$400,000 claims come from retrospective secondary accounts, and the accounts disagree. No individual final-season salary schedule, contract, or direct salary statement from an actor or representative is established by these sources. Any exact final-season order would therefore present uncertain estimates as confirmed fact.

Salary is not net worth or total earnings
A per-episode salary is a rate for work on the show. It is not an actor’s net worth, total career earnings, or income from residuals and other projects. Those measures cannot be substituted for a contract rate to create a more precise ranking.

The only well-supported comparison here is a shared reported range for all five leads in 2009: $90,000–$120,000 per episode. Later coverage estimates higher final-season rates, but it does not establish a dependable individual ranking. Read those figures as reported estimates, not verified contract terms.
