Red Bull adviser Helmut Marko put the damage to Sergio Perez’s car at “two or three million” after the opening-lap crash at the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix. He called it a “big handicap” under Formula 1’s budget-cap rules. Marko’s quoted estimate did not specify a currency, and it was not a confirmed repair invoice.
What did Red Bull say the damage cost?
Marko’s estimate was “two or three million,” as reported by Sky Sport Italia on May 28, 2024. Motorsport Week later rendered the estimate in English as “about two to three million.” Neither quoted version identifies whether Marko meant pounds, euros, dollars, or another currency.
Some coverage used a pound figure in its headline, but that should not be mistaken for Marko stating a currency: The Independent’s report quotes him saying “two or three million.” The evidence establishes an estimate attributed to Marko, not Red Bull’s final accounting of the repairs.
Why did Marko call it a budget-cap handicap?
Marko said the damage was a handicap for Red Bull under the budget-limit regulations. Replacing or repairing a heavily damaged car can consume resources within a team’s financial constraints, which is why a crash can matter beyond the immediate race result. But the available statements do not say how much development spending Red Bull had to forgo, or identify any specific project that was affected.

Team principal Christian Horner also described the crash as costly, while saying he did not know the extent of damage to the engine and chassis. Motorsport Week reported his comments on May 29, 2024: “Don’t know on the engine and the chassis [damage] but it is obviously a significant accident so it’s a costly one, very costly.” His uncertainty reinforces why Marko’s figure should not be presented as a finalized invoice.
What happened in the Monaco crash?
On May 26, 2024, Perez’s Red Bull RB20 was involved in an opening-lap collision with Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg’s Haas cars. Formula 1’s account says Magnussen hit Perez from behind, sending Perez into Hulkenberg; all three drivers retired. The stewards did not investigate the incident further.

Perez said the car was completely destroyed and that he was okay apart from a small graze to his elbow. Magnussen also noted the crash’s consequences for Haas, saying it meant spare parts, new parts, and extra work for the team. Formula 1 published the drivers’ comments and race outcome in its race-day report and its account of the start pile-up.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the reported figure does—and does not—establish
- It establishes: Marko publicly estimated the damage at two or three million and said it was a budget-cap handicap.
- It does not establish: the currency, a final repair amount, a separate engine or chassis bill, or a quantified reduction in development spending.
For that reason, the most accurate answer to “How much did Perez’s Monaco crash cost Red Bull?” is Marko’s attributed estimate—not a currency-converted total or a verified final cost.
